@@cheesemouse7774 LOL!....I have to say, these types of parents, in my humble opinion are the least of a coach's worries.....its not to say they know nothing, but their feedback is certainly something that can be entertained.....after all, some of the best NFL coaches never played a down in their life as well.....but back to the parent type....the worst type are the parents that show up and guilt coaches into somehow feeling obligated to play their kids or the ones that have some kind of School Board connection or influence on a coaches job.......let alone their kids or kids that show up and somehow manipulate a coaches judgement....at some point, there needs to be accountability and explanation as to why decisions are made.....when a kid that gets sparse playing time is consistently outplaying his peers in practice this is not teaching kids anything nor is it teaching parents anything as well....as a parent myself, I ALWAYS avoided the coach OUT OF RESPECT to allow them to "coach" only to see parents who talked to the coach and parents with "connections" have their kids trotted all the time while LOSING...sadly, most of these "coaches" seem to think you had to kiss up to them as a sign of respect rather than actually respecting them and their judgement in putting together a competent team based on actual performance......it seemed the only performance being measure was how well you could suck up to these "coaches"...simply disgusting.....and it was even that way in D3 college sports as well.....whatever happened to a Coach that would only engage parents if there was a problem....you know, like, hey, your kid keeps showing up late and doesn't have her contact lenses or shoes.....the only reasons I ever spoke to a coach was to tell them that my kid was sick or might have to miss a practice due to a conflict.....I never spoke to them about playing time or position or anything like that, and these "coaches" would view this as indifference and abuse it....and my kid was ALWAYS well prepared and well trained and ready.....so, its NOT all about the parents at times.....these coaches most times simply don't know how to handle the parents or they are being told what to do and who to play by their athletic director or others.....
You simply have to know how to handle Parents....not sure why this is so hard for so many coaches out there......if their kid is not that good then they need to improve rather than sit another kid who is more gifted or works harder.....and age shouldn't be a determining factor....potential should be.....and there should be certain objective mearsurable standards in which the players understand why decisions are being made....once that is establish ALL the nonsense goes away unless you have political interference due to School Board or Teachers or Athletic Directors telling you who you have to play......and at some point, rather than players who are good quitting, the ones that aren't good quit.....because, well, they don't work at it and expect things to be given to them because their moronic parents somehow think their kid should be in the limelight while the team loses game after game....LOL!

Instead, I'm saying that Daly was *ok* with coaching a team that explicitly excluded Isiah. A team led by Isiah's chief rival (Jordan). A team leader who stipulated Isiah's exclusion. MJ is still the best modern era player in my lifetime. Larry Bird is up there too. MJ soared when there was no 3 point line and physical hand checking was allowed. Plus his persona off the court speaks for itself.
He really knew what he was talking about. That's why in the 1984 NBA draft, he told the Portland trail Blazers owner to pick Michael Jordan and didn't follow Bobby's advice and the rest is history
Knight deserves credit for realizing Jordan's ability in college, but he was the #3 pick in the draft. It's not as if people didn't universally expect him to be an elite perennial all-star type player. He just wasn't seen as an all time great the way Bob saw him.
Kobe Bryant 13th pick. He wasn't even in the all rookie team of that year. Next year he shot 4 airballs at the end of the 4th quarter and overtime in game 5 vs Jazz in the playoffs. Who would have thought he was going to be the best western conference player of all time. Not me.
@@Trancymind the all rookie team doesn't matter. Especially back then before advanced analytics the voters were clueless. He only played 15 min a game that season so of course his stats aren't going to look that good. Per minute, though, his rookie performance was extremely impressive (especially for an 18 year old). Also, one playoff game doesn't matter. Judge players based on their overall skill level and their entire season performance over the last three seasons relative to their age. See the Dave Letterman Tonight Show episode with Bobby Knight on UA-cam. More to the chair tossing story !
I went to Bob Knight basketball camp in 1980 when I was 16. Middle of the summer and 95 degrees every day. My HS coach was there too with his two young boys. One day, Bob was giving a talk in the gym and makes an off hand comment something like “if you can find me a better point guard than Isaiah Thomas, it’ll snow a foot tomorrow.”
Later that night at dinner the two boys were insisting their dad find a way to get winter coats. Dad says “it’s 95 degrees out, why in the world would you want winter coats?” They both responded in earnest “Bob Knight said it’s going to snow a foot tomorrow”. I’ve never seen anyone command a room like the general.
That guy that was playing for the Lakers at the time. Magic
@@jeffboy13
True but Bob was talking about college. And Magic was better but not by a ton
@@jeffreykennedy5953 Magic was a lot better. That's why the Lakers won the title his rookie year.

Great story from an absolute legend
I could listen to hours of Coach Knights insights.
Awesome and hilarious! Jordan ain't gotta set no screen and Knight knows it! Hilarious!
Everybody knows it, that's the whole point.
Being from Terre Haute, Indiana Bobby Knight will always be my favorite basketball coach.
even tho he drove Larry Bird to leave after one month of being there?
The real goat Michael Jeffrey Jordan
One of the greatest basketball coaches ever! Maybe the best!
I'd say second best, John Wooden was the GOAT!
"By a large margin!"
He knew what he was watching, even before pros I remember Knight saying he is the best in the country..
He said, before the draft, that Jordan was the best player he’d ever seen play. Considering who all he had seen play, that is an incredible comment.
@@scotthartig4521
One of the many reasons why shit grinning smiling scumbag Isiah Thomas hates Two-Time Olympic gold medalist Michael Jordan.
You are correct. Knight recognized him as the best player even before he played in the NBA.
@@scotthartig4521 I wonder what Knight felt about Len Bias. He was as good at the time. I’m a die hard MJ fan but just curious what college coaches thought of Bias.
Hakeem was just as good, maybe better.. Most dominant 94 foot player who ever played, without question.. Score, defend, protect the rim, run the floor, finish, rebound and outlet pass to start the best fast break I ever saw.. Everything, everywhere..
What a great story, and Coach told that story perfectly !!!!
There will never be another Bob Knight
"I took that personally" - Jordan
You’ll be missed Coach Bob Knight. In all facets of the game, the tenacity, the grit, wether they’ll like or not, the game of basketball lost one of its greats…
Some have had MJ's physical gifts, some have had his mental focus, some have had his winning record, but...
I feel like Phelps and Tiger had those same traits.
Bird had it and a sense of teamwork
Bird didn’t have his physical gifts. Come off it.
@@subutaiscipio4318 He didn't say jumping and running. He said the It Factor. Bird was stronger, bigger, better rebounder, better clutch, better jump shooter, better 3-point shooter, better passer.
@@costumeninja1914 He didn't say It factor. He said it, referring to the traits mentioned in the first post. MJ was a better overall player than Bird. He was faster and could jump higher and was better at the 2 key qualities; He was way better at scoring and way way better at stopping people from scoring. Jordan was stronger for his size and ws more durable. Jordan was by far the better player so i am not sure what you hoped to accomplish by listing Bird's qualities. No contest between those 2.
“The first night Larry played against him - I knew he (Jordan) was good - but Larry said, he said to me, he said, ‘That guy is gonna be the greatest player ever, you watch,'” Boston Globe beat reporter Dan Shaughnessy told Damon Amendolara
Damn that's a good story
he knew jordan was legend as a rookie
He said it before MJ got drafted, that MJ was the best player ever.
It was after the draft but before his first season. Had the draft come after the Olympics the Bulls might not have gotten the pick (at least that what Rod Thorn said)
He implored the Portland GM to draft Jordan with their second overall pick. The GM told Knight he needed a center (he ended up famously drafting ce ter Sam Bowie).
Knight told him to draft Jordan and play him at center.
That's right, I was at Dick Bennett's Basketball camp, asked Coach Bennett How Teri Porter was doing in Olympics tryouts that summer. Teri Porter had the flu and was picked as one of the Olympic alternates. UWSP div.3 , Teri Porter played some good ball for Portland against Jordan's Bulls, some great battles. I was going into my Senior of Highschool, I have never seen anyone play which such intensity as Jordan, and never seen anyone Coach with more intensity than Knight. The Greatest are often not liked..
I liked Coach Bennet, his Son coaches Virginia, Toney. Good Folks...
Better Luck next yr. Coach Bennett.
RIP Coach Knight
Great story! Hysterical! ❤
If only it were true. MJ finished the game with 20 points, 2 assists and 1 rebound.
What an awesome story!

Best impersonation of Bobby Knight, played by Nick Nolte in Blue Chips.
Not even close….Bob Knight never took a bag of money to win or paid players to win. That movie was nothing close to Bob Knight. It may compare some in regards to temperament but it’s not that close in terms of how he was in regards to his ethical conduct.
I wonder what Bobby Knight thought about that joke that went around back in the day? It goes like this: Bobby Knight bought a furniture store. He is having a sale that if you buy a sofa he will throw in a chair. (This joke references the famous incident where he angrily slide a chair onto the court during a college game.)
Coaching isn't easy. Maybe not possible without the support of the community. Parents hurt teams more than anyone else.
I’m a coach and I couldn’t agree more. Most of the time by a parent who couldn’t even play the game themselves, or that don’t understand the rules/laws of the game. I once had a parent who was questioning my coaching abilities, and when he was finished having his say, I stated…
“I will tell you what. If you really want to be a coach. No problem. Go thru the classes, and get issued your coaching license, and once you have it you can show up Monday thru Thursday evenings at 5 pm for the 6-7:30 practices, and you can show up at 5 pm for the 6-8 pm games on Saturday, and at 6 am for the 7-9 am games on Sunday morning. Here’s a whistle, you’ll need it for the practice sessions. You’ve got skates, and a helmet, a stick, and a good pair of shin guards and a helmet, right?”
His reply, “Coach I can’t skate.”
My reply, “Then get the hell off my bench!”
@@trevorregay9283 So we have to know how to handle moronic parents? Sounds like you never coached kids whose parents call the school trying to get you fired every day because their kid doesn't play enough.
Who cares?
Funniest story I've heard from Coach Knight. I've heard a few of them!
Bobby Knight forgot about Wilt! Still, the Trailblazers should have listened to him...imagine Drexler and Jordan together!
This is my favorite story about MJ. A legendary coach calls you the best and then desperately tries to find something wrong with you and can only come up with needing to set more screens. 😂😂😂❤🏀

1984, Bob Knight: " _MJ is the best player I've ever seen_ "
1988, Isiah Thomas = Played pro ball for Chuck Daly (and won 2 chips)
1992, Chuck Daley: " _MJ doesn't want Isiah on the Dream Team. Oh, well, I'll take this coaching gig_ "
...the *rivalry* continues...
When and where did chuck Daly say he didn't want Isiah on the 1992 Olympic team
@@allworld8052 Agh; I think you might've misread my paraphrased quote:
1992, Chuck Daly: " _MJ doesn't want Isiah on the Dream Team. Oh, well, I'll [still] take this coaching gig_ "
I'm not saying that Daly explicitly stated that he didn't want Isiah on the Dream Team. Instead, I'm saying that Daly was *ok* with coaching a team that explicitly excluded Isiah. A team led by Isiah's chief rival (Jordan). A team leader who stipulated Isiah's exclusion.
That's an extra twist to a tightly-bound rivalry.

MJ is still the best modern era player in my lifetime. Larry Bird is up there too. MJ soared when there was no 3 point line and physical hand checking was allowed. Plus his persona off the court speaks for itself.
NBA got the 3 point line in 1979. Jordan rookie year was 84

Kudos, Knight. Facts!
I lived long enough to remember watching this...
I was at the Olympic trials in Bloomington in 1984. Still got the program.
He really knew what he was talking about. That's why in the 1984 NBA draft, he told the Portland trail Blazers owner to pick Michael Jordan and didn't follow Bobby's advice and the rest is history
He did forget Wayne Gretzky
That is a great story
Kobe's first two seasons were excellent considering he was 18 and 19. Kobe was definitely an elite prospect coming out of high school. It's just teams foolishly thought picking kids with no college experience was too risky. People definitely saw Kobe as having elite potential.
@@Asshat237 What I'm trying to say is Kobe had low expectations in general including me during that time. I was a Laker fan from 1986 till 2018. Kevin Garnett had way more elite potential than Kobe believe it or not. Both were drafted out of high school. How many NBA players have won at least 5 NBA championships with at least 1 MVP award picked 13th pick or higher? Nobody.
@@Trancymind He was the number one player coming out of high school. Just because you didn't see elite potential doesn't mean he didn't have it.
@@Trancymind He was picked 13th because teams were not ready to pick high school players. It was not because of his talent. Calipari, who was the head coach of the Nets at the time, wanted to take him with their pick at #8. I can't recall the specific reason he has given for why the GM didn't agree with him. I'm gonna look it up

Knight made this up. Jordan never came close to a triple double in any 1984 Olympic Game, let alone the first half.
I looked up the stats and you are correct. Still makes a great story. Too bad about his temper, he may have been the 2nd or 3rd greatest of all time, John Wooden being first. Maybe Coach K gets 2nd. He learned how to Coach working as an assistant under Knight at IU.

Then he wouldn't be Bobby Knight!
He was pretty flexible. Sometimes he threw chairs, but other times he just choked players. That's what made him great. He was flexible about the way he went out of control.

The whole tournament he never had more than 3 assists or 4 rebounds in a game.
This story is completely fabricated or somehow Knight confused it with some practice game. This never happened in the 84 Olympics.
