Very recently switched to Sony as well, traded in my R5 + 85 1.2 for A7iv + 50 1.2 GM and Sigma 24-70 II, waiting for the Samyang 135mm to complete my kit. Really happy with the switch, everything is so snappy and fast (Lighter as well) and the friendly Sony approach for third party manufacturers doesn't require you to spend ridiculous amounts of money for good glass or adapting older lenses as an alternative.
@bruceinmyheart I did watch reviews, its good but also considerably heavier, the Samyang was on par with GM IQ wise, that's enough performance and at 770g weight as well was an easier choice.
I use Nikons because they suit me well. My go to lens is the 24-120 for almost everything. Number 2 lens is the 14-24 f.2.8. I have 2 bodies and carry both at the same time, although that’s getting heavy at age 77.
Hey Julia, many thanks for the insights into your portrait bag. I would also add a Bluetooth speaker, otherwise it's a 24 instead of the 135 and the whole thing with Lumix and Sigma equipment. Your tip with the silicone blanket as a base is great, I didn't know that before. Extremely practical!!! Best regards from Germany, Ingo
For me the 35mm f/1.4 GM stays on my A7IV all the time. I also utilize the 24-70mm f/2.8 GM2 lens. That is pretty much the two lenses i use for my style of photography. Maybe i will eventually get the 50mm f/1.2 because of the dreamy and buttery bokeh it produces
The A7iii is pretty cheap, and the A7IV can be had for under $2k used. Just get one body. As for lenses, the GMs are expensive, so go with the same focal lengths from Samyang, Tamron, Sigma or Viltrox.
Hey Julia, i have an a7 IV, the same primes (35,50 1.2,85II, 135) and a 70-200mm f2.8 , 24mm GM ... Sony A1 II on the list (changing from a A1 and an A9 Mark 1).
There is a iPhone and Android app called Horizon that the camera will always film horizontal. Also the Black Magic app will also do this for iPhone. These are good if you want behind the scene footage and have your phone mounted to your camera. But I like the glasses much better for somethings. Like outdoor footage. Indoor for weddings in low light I might like the phone better if I need to bring my eye up to the EVF.
I rock a Sony A7 IV, for portraits i have a 50mm 1.4, my sony macro 90mm 2.8 and my fav. my Sigma 105mm 1.4 ( heavy but worth it! ) for nature and wildlife I got a 16mm 1.8 and a 150-500mm 5.0-6.7 and of course the macro 90mm 2.8 :D have a nice one
Hi 😊 Thanks for your tips! ❤What type of mat is the black silicone you showed in the video? I just found silicone mats for dinner online, but I guess it would be pretty difficult to fold this type of mat to fit into a photo backpack. Btw gorgeous idea to use this material! 👍🤩 Thanks!
may i ask how you're recording your camera info into the HDMI? there clearly is a cable there, but no idea what it leads to. What's your gear for recording this? Thank you and keep posting great content :)
I'm now normally using the fuji gfx with an 80mm f1.7 lens for shooting portraits, I'm not so professional to try all the brands but wanna know if you have tested medium format to shoot portraits as well and how different to Sony ( because I want to change to sony for the fast focus system) by the way I have a small tripod for some in-room shoot.
I just looked up your travel bag video, and what I'm kind of missing is the context. Like, when you travel, is it just personal photography to capture where you are, or is it also paid jobs? And also, how does UA-cam fit in? In the sense of, do you record videos for UA-cam (which I guess would still be a commercial thing you do wile traveling)? I'm also asking this because I like to travel, and I like to do photography while I travel, But if I travel, I am there first and foremost to experience that environment. But when I put a camera in front of my face, I sort of compromise on that, which is not always worth it. I can only imagine that the pressure of having to do commercial work would be interfering with that even more.
I really wish Sony would make a 40mm GM lens, or two - f/1.4 and f/1.2 (but even just one of those would be better than nothing). For me, 40mm is a great sweet spot between 35 and 50 (35 is often too wide, and 50 is often too narrow, imho) 🙂📷
@ Yes, exactly why I wish Sony would get busy and make at least one 40mm GM (or at least in the 40-43mm range). There is the Sony 40mm f/2.5 G, which is nice for walk-around stuff but not the best for portraits or ultimate image quality on a 61MP (or higher) camera (though, it’s quite good for what it is). So keeping my fingers crossed that there will be more really good 40mm -ish options soon.
@@bngr_bngr Yes, I am aware. I’d wager it’s not as sharp/good as a newer GM/II lenses though. There are other advantages to using Sony lenses on a Sony body as well. If I didn’t mind a big heavy third party lens, I’d likely buy the Sigma art 40mm. But I’d rather smaller, lighter, and Sony (at least if it’s going on a Sony camera).
I use both Sony and Fuji GFX, I have many lenses that can be used on both Sony and Fuji from Sigma and Zeiss. The only Sony lens I have is the 135mm F1.8 GM, but on 135mm I have four different brands, Sony, Zeiss, Sigma and Viltrox. Viltrox is a very impressive lens. For 85mm equivalent focal length the best lens I used is 110mm F2 from Fujifilm GFX. I wasn't that impress with 85mm F1.4 GM since it is only marginally better than 85mm F1.4 Sigma but 110mm F2 from Fuji is another league in PQ.
85mm 1.2. Viltrox and some mysterious Chinese company are making 85mm 1.2 lens. Im holding off on upgrading my Sigma 85mm DG DN for a 1.2 option. Guessing Sony will be releasing it someday.
You can't compare a 50mm F1.2, 85mm F1.4(and she said she would like a 1.2) and her 135mm F1.8 with a 28-45mm F1.8, it's no contest. The only focal lenght that would overlap would be her 35mm F1.4. I think you already know the answer, 28-45 is such a weird focal lenght.
Sony has very good cameras. I have a Nikon D750 and I should not spend an inordinate amount of money on gear, because it puts pressure on my photography and it’s just hobby (I love the fact that my D750 and 100-400 cost the same as my iPhone). However I am tempted to go mirrorless, and Sony gear is quite small and light, which I prefer (I only do travel photography). But I wonder if they aren’t just a bit too evil for me. ;) Matt Granger mentioned toxicity as a reason he did not go with Sony. Having said that, that’s him and not necessarily me. The A7 IV ergonomics aren’t that great for me, but they are rumored to release the Mk V in the not too distant future. Still, I’m not sure I want to switch to Sony. Just a personal thing, but it’s my choice so I think I’m entitled. If they were miles better than Nikon, that would be one thing, but they’re not. And even if they are, I am most likely the weak link. In the meantime I’m actually also considering MFT. It would be much lighter, though also less capable.
@@bngr_bngr One thing that I would like is to be able to check my images for things like critical focus in the field, regardless of the weather. LCD screens are not ideal because the sun can make it very hard to see, but an EVF is perfect for this. Another thing is that, with some mirrorless cameras, the IBIS is so good that depending on the circumstances, I might not need a tripod, which means I can carry less. And then there are all the other mirrorless advantages of seeing the exposure in the viewfinder, AF coverage and subject detection modes, etc. Not that a DSLR like the ones you mention can't get excellent results btw.
With the camera strap you look like the Lucky Luke of photography 😉. I think you shoot your pictures faster than your shadow 😉. Don’t you think this would be a great outro for one of your next videos? Amazing work as always Julia!!! It’s a pleasure to follow you!!!
i dont like sony because their SOOC file isnt good, must be edited to be good,, but canon nikon fuji file SOOC its nice, very pleased, even can be give to client direct after photoshoot
personal opinion here.... i see that most if not all of your shots are edited with a film preset. Do your clients just prefer that over your natural looking sharper imagery? I try hard to get into the "film" look but I just cant' get past how unnatural it looks to me.
Hi Julia. Thank you so much for this great video! I learned a lot and your tips are groundbreaking for me! Thank you for that!
Trying to lock back in to shooting a lot of photography and start educating myself again! Love your work!
Wow, such an amazing work. Sounds too professional. Love it!
Great tip with the silicone mat!
Great video! I personally use a Lumix S5II, I have a few lenses, but my go-to for portraiture is the Samyang 35-150mm 😊

😮
Consider the Viltrox 135mm LAB instead of Samyang 😊
You must have lost a lot of money selling the Canon gear. I see it on eBay so cheap. It wants me to get some Canon super telephotos.
@bngr_bngr I've lost nothing, it was a 1:1 trade with a Sony shooter.
@bruceinmyheart I did watch reviews, its good but also considerably heavier, the Samyang was on par with GM IQ wise, that's enough performance and at 770g weight as well was an easier choice.

Why is it that you don't seem to use vertical grips on your camera?

Sony Feels like PREMIUM and well-built + weatherproof; it seems like a great choice.
“dust and splash resistant” does not = ‘weatherproof’
I’m waiting for Sony to switch to a bigger mount. Sony needs a 85/1.2 instead of having to use an adapted lens.
@@bngr_bngr This is an unsubstantiated myth. Current FE mount allows for something like f/0,8 lenses.
