Apparently Billy Wilder called him and said "hello, God calling" (or something similar) . True story.
It seems it was "Hello Fernando, it's God".
Now this is how each category should be presented prior to reading the list of Nominees. Very professional.
Three Asian films were nominated that year!
If you look closely, the director (on the right) is wearing a pin from Spain's 90's TV show "El Gran Juego de la Oca".
Genio.
belle epoque is a hymn to the joy of living. it is a tribute to the human being, to his humanity far from homelands or flags. to the human being who is in contact with his most vital instincts. the sad scene that leaves the end of the film (a man who is forced to choose between four beautiful women) tells us about the end of innocence and happiness. belle epoque for me is a profound and meaningful experience.
😘
👏👏👏👏👏👏
For the Vietnamese, we're always been proud when our country was pronounce in the world. We don't need to care what branch are, we just proud when we hear "Vietnam" in the international. So "Mùi đu đủ xanh" was nominated in the top 5 foreign non-english film such a big proud for us. And this year, after 30 yrs, "Những đứa trẻ trong sương" (Eng sub: Children of the mist") was in the top 15 foreign non-english film make us so proud. Sorry for bad English, but I just want to everybody knows, how proud I am right now.
It’s ok. Quite ok. Hope there are more Oscars for Vietnam
the movie belongs to France , not Vietnam , 😏 no any proud 🚽
2:10 That's the "El Gran Juego de la Oca" pin on his left side.
Player won a car for that pin.
Gracias Trueba
Farewell my concubine was robbed
Did you see Belle Epoque? That is o e of the best films eve, not spanish films, not foreing lenguage films, one of the best in any category. But definitely that was a great year for foreing films at the Oscars, The Smell of Green Papaya was amazing too...
@@melavzla no, it's forgetable, worst film in the line up
Melissa Bellais
Nice work. But, one of the best ever? Are you serious? Yes, Farewell my Concubine should have won!
@@melavzlaI would rather “ my farewell , concubine “ movie than your fking movie 😏
Wonderful film!
Great film!. Thank you mister Wilder!!.
VIETNAMESE FILM
I love “Belle Époque” one of the best foreign films EVER ❤️❤️❤️
How did Stalingrad (Germany) not get nominated? That's an awesome film.
Don’t know
Spain needs another Oscar win soon. And not just for Best Foreign Language Film but for the other categories too
Anthony is the greatest actor.
Farewell My Concubine should've won. I wonder if Leslie Cheung was invited to the ceremony.
Maybe some other time Vietnam will be nominated and win. Maybe even for Best Documentary Feature
Yes agree! I think Farewell My Concubine should’ve won as well! I believe Leslie did attend the event, I wish the cameramen gave him some shots in the ceremony!!
And, the film won Best Film in the 1993 Cannes Film Festival so to not win Best Foreign Film here is an insult
The Juego de la oca's pin
Good to see he got new, even bigger, nerd glasses since 1993 Oscars.
Trueba said Billy Wilder called him the next day to his hotel room saying "this is God speaking" hahahaha
He should have won for Chico And Rita and for Calle 54
VN🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳
El Juego de la oca's pin
Second Oscar in this category for my country. Penélope Cruz is in this movie and it seems like nobody remembers it.
Back then in 1993 she was not famous like today!
Yes!!! That was the first time I saw he in a movie. She was a baby when she did that movie... Amazing, gorgeous film!
You must be kidding...this is the film that put Penelope Cruz in Hollywood
@@javierderivero9299 She didn't start getting roles in Hollywood until the late 90's / early 2000's. I think "Abre los ojos" was actually her jumpstart in foreign movies.
Vielvo ok volvemos
Whoopi Goldberg looked so young back then
Why did anthony hopkins present the award for best foreign language movie?
Farewell my concubine its a piece of art Belle Epoque was a minor film compare vs Farewell my Concubine.
Kenembu2012 c
Diego Ruiz Ang Lee?Ahahahah
@@DiegoRuiz1991 ??
Haha, I remember how "THE FIGHTER" made fun of this movie.
Fernando Truaba, 😂
He should have won for Chico And Rita.
Another undeserving winner!!!
"The Wedding Banquet" and "Farewell My Concubine" are far better than the very slight "Belle Epoque"!!!
Hey, what about The Scent of Green Papaya, which is from my home country?
nbvu1 Definitely far more interesting and unusual than the very routine "Belle Epoque"!!!
I much prefer Hong Kong’s Farewell My Concubine to win! Robbed of the title!
Belle epoque was the least deserving of the 5. Farewell , the scent and the wedding are masterpieces. Great year for Asian films.
Western culture is understood better in the west.
Ba Wang bie ji should have won
Farewell my Concubine should have won! A masterpiece! The Wedding Banquet and The Scent of the Green Papaya were better then Belle Epoque too!
It was ok,overrated movie,not a great movie.
bad choice...
Good choice....
Great choice!!
Farewell, My Concubine should've won! It won the Palme D'or, BAFTA and several awards.
Guess Oscars didn’t think Hong Kong was a country
