  • Recently we came across this beautiful Facel Vega II 1962 at The Gallery in Brummen, The Netherlands. We took the car for a little spin! We love to hear your comments on our videos. Feel free to leave one!
The Facel Vega 'Facel II' was a French Grand Touring car produced by Facel between the years 1962 and 1964.
By 1962 the Paris-based Facel Vega company was facing bankruptcy. The Facel II (pronounced '2') was to be the company's last attempt to create a luxury GT car in the French tradition.
The Facel Vega company advertised the Facel II as "Le Coupé 4-places le plus rapide du Monde" ('The Fastest 4-seater Coupé in the World'). 'Sports Car Graphic' described it as a "luxurious brute". Bernard Cahier, a race-driver who tested the car in 1962, said of an early version (without the later limited-slip differential) that "the huge output of the Chrysler engine made it easy to spin wheels at light throttle pressure."
It was powered by an American 6.3 litre (383 cu.in.) Chrysler 'Typhoon' engine which produced 355 hp (265 kW) in automatic-gearbox form and 390 hp (291 kW) in manual. Using Chrysler's three-speed Torqueflite automatic gearbox, the 6.3-litre Facel II could reach over 135 mph (225 km/h). With a French Pont-a-Mousson four-speed manual gearbox the full-four-seater 6.3 litre Facel II could attain over 150 mph (247 km/h) and out-accelerate its two-seater rivals, the Aston Martin DB4, Ferrari 250 GT and 'gull-wing' Mercedes-Benz 300SL, to 60 mph (97 km/h) and all except the Ferrari to 100 mph (160 km/h). Dunlop disc brakes were fitted on all four wheels and Hydrosteer power steering, leather seats, electric windows and radio aerial all became standard during the production run, with Armstrong Selecta-Ride shock-absorbers adjustable from the dash while driving fitted to the right-hand-drive British models. The curvaceous wrap-round dash was in fact metal but meticulously painted to look like wood. Many of the controls were airplane inspired. The later manuals were fitted with the even more powerful 6.7 litre (413 cu.in.) Chrysler "RB" wedge engine and were faster still.
Like its predecessor, the Facel Vega HK500, the Facel II was heavier than its two-seater rivals, weighing 1,880 kilograms (4,100 lb) (37 cwt) 'dry' and almost two tons with four passengers and a full petrol tank. There may have been some question about its ride and rear suspension - it used suspension virtually unchanged from the previous HK500 - but certainly none about its speed or glamour.

As a student from Holland, studying in Grenoble in ‘79 we went with a group of 8 friends to Nice for a week, driving there in a ds and an Amazone.
We had lots fun of beach-time.
One day we went for the beach and parked at the boulevard there was this car, silver wirh a red interior.
I was completely stunned and told my friends to go ahead and I would catch up later.
I sat on a bench opposite the car for half an hour and looked at every detail.
Since then my love for cars emerged but I’ll never forget the combo friends, sun and beach and surely not Facel Vega.

On a cold January morning in 1966 I was hitch hiking at the start of the Munich - Stuttgart autobahn, a Facel Vega 2 stopped for me. For the next hour I enjoyed the experience of traveling at a steady 130 MPH. I now own one of Stuttgart's finest products and even after all these years it is still the most glamorous car I have ever been in.

Truly, it brought me child hood memories. One of my relatives owned a Converible , here in Portugal. I loved ridding in the plush, soft-leather seat enjoying the wind, the leather smell....
In my view, the car was classier and better than the Mercedes 190. And was even superior to its replacement, the Mercedes 230 (not being offered yet at the time). There was also a smaller model, the FACELLIA.. Thanking you once again, Warm regards, Albert

Facel cars have a short History. Jean Daninos created FACEL (Forges et Ateliers de Construction d'Eure et Loire) in the 1930s to manufacture aircraft parts. After the war, he notably built aluminum bodies-in-white and some complete Ford Comete or e.g. Simca Plein Ciel, Brentley MkVI,...
When he decided to produce HIS car, his brother popular writer Pierre Daninos suggested to add the name of ... "say a constellation" after Facel. Then... :-)

I am amazed by the beauty of this automobile - which we classify in "Beautiful from yesteryear".
Today's models (regardless of the brand) have no stamp and nor any class.
I don't know the Facel models, but the ones I saw have a lot of class.
It's a bit because I'm an American, Canadian, Quebecer from Quebec City 😋
But I must admit that this french automobile is very beautiful.

  • @ce253
    @ce253 3 роки тому +4

In 1961 I spent a holiday in Brighton on the south coast of England
and, several times, saw a Facel Vega very similar to this - and the same colour.
On one occasion I was walking along the promenade when it glided to rest just in
ahead of me and four people got out of it. Two days later, when I had returned
home, there was a report in my daily newspaper that a Facel Vega had crashed
on the outskirts of Brighton killing all four passengers.

Back in the very late 60s, I was front seat passenger in a gorgeous black Facel Vega 2 (with an equally gorgeous blond sitting on my lap) and three other friends in the back + my chum the driver. At (admittedly) fairly high speed on the Ascot Road in Berkshire, England, a private double decker Bingo Bus turning right into our road pulled out directly across our path. We swerved behind the bus slightly clipping its rear, mounted the wide pavement (sidewalk/footpath) which collapsed our front suspension, then travelling on down the pavement we hit a Mini (parked on the pavement would you believe!) which smashed into the adjacent brick wall and rebounded back into our Facel Vega, throwing the car into a lamp post and finally into the side of a bus shelter. Remarkably I was the only physically injured party with a very tiny shard of glass from the quaterlight imbedded in my forehead ( I can still feel the scar). But what REALLY hurt was the article of the accident which appeared days later in the local newspaper which told of a vehicle accident involving a bus and a... "Vauxhall Viva"!!!! That, along with the demise of a very beautiful and rare motorcar, still causes me to cringe... (True story)

I'm talking Facel Vega, Alpine, Hispano-Suiza, Delage, Delahaye... Great names, but all gone (as far automotive pedigree is concerned). France being the birthplace of the automobile industry, what an unfortunate twist of fate to see that these marvels are now long gone.

Jammer genoeg niet in staat om mij al dat moois wat jij hebt te kunnen veroorloven.
En door mijn MS veroordeeld tot het rijden in automaten. (Saab 95 2.3 T; ook niet zo verkeerd trouwens)

I was a big Fan of Aston Martin Lagonda until i saw the interieur of that car. The Lagonda2 was produced in 1976 and it s interieur even in a restaurated exemplar looks cheap, shabby and unsound. Lot of the " seventies High tec" in it, today it is impossible to fix. And then, look at this Facels Console and dashboard. it seems from undestroyable noblesse.

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned
from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the
Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025
on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas
station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station fuel
pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in
the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems,
turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and
New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be
done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of
crime here, called emissions and smoke crime :-(/
