    All my life, I stayed up past midnight and struggled to wake up for work each morning. Now that I'm retired, I'm falling asleep by 9 pm and wake up before 5 am without an alarm. Sometimes I even take an afternoon nap...and I'm ok with that.

      same here. Staying late when working us your need to have that free time outside of work (after 5 or 6 pm when you come from work). Whe retired you just have all day for yourself, no need to stay late.

    I worked at a major Insurance company for 25 years. Many of my coworkers worked with me for a decade or more. and we all got along great. Good people. Early retirement came and I left the company. In the past 15 years of retirement, I have not contacted even one of my past co-workers and not one has attempted to contact me. There is no "void" from work in my retired life. It was just a tool to pay the bills and invest enough to retire early. Other than my wife, everybody I know is just an acquaintance, they come and go with the season.

    Man, I'm glad I don't suffer from the relevance problem. Couldn't run fast enough from the world of fortune 500.
    I don't attend any events. Don't keep in touch with other than small handful of people. Controlling my time and enjoying the rest of my life is all the relevance I demand of myself ☺️

    I love that you pointed out that some relationships are for a season and some for a lifetime. And it is all ok. It is how it is meant to be in this life.

    You two ate very understanding about people needing to feel relevant. It follows Maslow’s Hierarchy. People should strive to be a mentor, volunteer, be on a board of directors- anything but harass people in an HOA, haha.

    • @CCB249
      @CCB249 4 місяці тому

      People just don't understand how important an really strong HOA is if you live in a condominium. Just look at Champlain Towers South in Surfside in Florida.

    • @denakelley4363
      @denakelley4363 4 місяці тому

      @@CCB249 Where I live, all HOA's seem to do is harass people over their grass and tell them how high their fence must be and what colors their house can be painted. One of my friends even got fined because a tree the HOA planted on her property died, and for having an unapproved exterior light on her garage. They're even trying to prevent people from having solar panels on their roofs or EV chargers on their property. My husband and I deliberately sought property where there is no HOA.

    I lost my career last October due to an injury at work. I’m still collecting work comp for now. I really do understand the loss of identity. I was a firefighter for 30+ years and loved my job everyday. Right now I’m lost as to what my next life looks like at 59!

      I have a similar situation. Worked in public safety communications for 20+ years, then injured at work and unexpected injury retirement. Which took 5+ years. So. I found volunteering (with Team Rubicon) gave me purpose and meaning, and worked with my abilities and with other former first responders. Good luck on your journey and happy healing ❤️‍🩹

    Enjoying your content. My question is if G-d forbid something happened to either of you would you still continue this lifestyle? Also what is your game plan for when traveling is not appropriate for health or physical limitations?

    Thanks for sharing all those things that disappear or change in retirement. I had never thought about relevance before in that way which is really important when suddenly your work-life disappears. For me, I went back to university to study teaching English which I did for six years in China. When that was finished, I now work on family history, not just for me, but for my larger family. Thanks again to both of you for sharing so many of your ideas. You are the best!

    You guys nailed all the issues I’m facing right now. I feel like I'm retired because I have no work, but the cost of living is draining my portfolio. I feel like I’ll have to do something like you guys to be able to retire. Do you miss your home base or roots?

  • @AgingOnYourTerms

    The relevance part is so spot on. When I retired, my former staff and colleagues reached out because they missed our non-work conversations and my real-world advice. As an introvert, I started a blog to share written stories, but they wanted to hear my voice. So now I'm on UA-cam.

    Good video guys, my identity was never tied to any job, it is tied 100% to travelling and exploring. Most people do not know what to do when they retire, mainly because they never planned properly, both financially or interests, sadly they sit in front of the TV wasting their lives.

    It’s interesting because Covid made work from home more popular. I believe people feel less connected with coworkers and their jobs now. As such, I think identities tied to jobs/careers is waning. I am definitely finding new interests outside of work so when I eventually retire, the transition will be smoother.

    I think the whole "relevance" thing is funny. I'm retiring in two weeks.. I'm a manager and been there 25 years. I think I'm one of thew few that don't care about that. I just want to disappear and not be bothered. Honestly changing my phone number, so work people can't call me. 😂 To be honest when you leave your job, you will be forgotten. Unless there is something you did, that job doesnt know how to do. My good friends I met at my job, we already hang out. So I'm good. I got breast cancer over the pandemic. So I'm looking forward to resting and getting myself back together. I'm a introvert. So if I ever do a UA-cam, it will be faceless.

    So, I am 73 years.old and have been retired for 6 years. I raised a family of 3 children without a husband and had a very good job as a corporate CEO. I've traveled the world before and after retirement. I have a daily routine in retirement doing things that I like to do and live in New England.
    I ENJOY the anonymity now that I'm retired. I love my life entirely and have no interest in having the most valued opinion or last word.
    I truly appreciate your channels. I've been watching for a couple years. Started with Amtrak travels that were wonderful! Keep enjoying your lives. You provide valuable information for all of us. Thank you for all of that.

    What a great video. 😮 Especially having and maintaining relevance.
    I also understand how friendships change and evolve over time. So true when we lived abroad that it was very easy to make friends.
    But one of the best things is how you've combined several of these into the how and why you make these videos. Extremely helpful. Thanks 👍

    I think I understand the concept you're talking about wanting to be relevant, but I do not understand it from my own perspective. I don't need to please anyone, I don't need to feel useful to someone else. Or maybe I do I just don't know it

      My husband is the same way. I think it completely depends on your personality type. He’s a phlegmatic and he does not care one bit about what people think of him. He works hard goes home and forgets about it. Lol I on the other hand get a lot of my relevance from my work I have for the last 25 years but I think I’ll be OK when I retire at some point we’re all just done!

My relevance symptoms may start in fall when school starts up and I’m not there. But I have a lot to keep me busy for now so we’ll see what the future brings.

    Good point about the loss of relevance. I hadn't thought of that. Retired people seem bored to me but I agree that losing the status that a good job brings is a problem for a lot of people. Also in societies like the US you're judged by your job. If you don't have a job you're irrelevant in the minds of many people.

    Excellent video! That is so true what you say about friendships. You decide to stay in a certain place rather than try full-time travel because you have your friends you get together with, and you think by staying put it will just stay that way forever. But then one of those friends gets a job in another city and the friendship changes anyway. Nothing stays the same...either you make a change or someone else will. And as you say, your friendships are based on things you have in common. The things you had in common with those people you grew up with have faded. Now you have new friends you've made while traveling, friends who understand your passion for travel. That's a good way of looking at it...we can have different friends in different seasons of our lives, and there is nothing wrong with that. Thank you for sharing!

    I don't need to be relevant. I'm not in this world to impress anybody. Obviously I wasn't relevant when I was blindsided by a layoff & now struggling to find work. I won't be able to retire with the increase of everyday living necessities that I need to survive. I just say I'm semi-retired since I'm not employed right now. All my savings & 401K/IRA will be gone in a matter of months. The struggle is REAL!!!

Now I have the construct. Thank you.
