I got this knife as a gift and I must have been living a good life as it worked well for what it is. The compass worked, I took out the tube and added my own mini-gear. I added Lock-Tite to the nut component just in case. The "saw" was used for scaling fish. It was pretty tasty after using the matches and some laundry lint to start a fire going. The knife was not made for batoning or throwing. Occasionally I'll change the gear inside. My latest was adding a micro-mini light.
I did something similar to my survival knife, it was a Defender or Maxam type model. The serrations were good so I didn't need to work on those. I added a washer and put locktite on the nut, put strike anywhere matches, longer fishing line added more hooks & weights. It was a neat little project. Did something along those lines with a Rambo knife as well.
They are serrations for w/e you need them for? scrape inner bark, seperate strands from inner barks, fish scalers, maybe even a scraper for your ferro rod... etc.
my old friend used to say something about baton methods. "if you are ever in a situation where the only possible way to split wood is to baton your knife, then your situation is FUBAR and you should definitely not risk damaging your knife." batoning can damage even high quality knives or cause injury especially if you try it with such a short blade. the chances are low, but its a chance that you really don't need to take. just use smaller pieces of wood until you can get bigger pieces going. takes like 5 minutes longer...
You cant do that in a environment that is wet and rainy constantly, we teach batoning at the school i work at, it has a time and a place. I have batoned wood every single week for the past 7 years with my newest knife, i havent damaged it, bent it or broke it in any way shape or form. If you don't know how to baton sure you can scew up your knife, or if you are doing it with a knife that doesn't have a full tang, or is made from cheap materials. You baton to get to the dry wood on the inside, and it usually needs to be a larger piece of wood around a beer can in diameter to make sure the wood is dry. Thats where you would get the dry wood from and dry tinder if you have no other source.
@circa blonk because batoning wood is a survival skill, utilizing the kit and tool the average person may still have on their person in a isolating incident, historically it is the one tool the majority of people have because it is attached to their body. Of course you would use a axe if you had one.
@circa blonk I have a axe but rarely use it while instructing, because my students don't have a axe. They need to see how to accomplish the tasks without specific tools and see how it can be done. I teach survival for the U.S. military and have done so for over 12 years.
I have seen expensive knives with high quality steel chip out during batoning. Very good knives, with very good steel. The problem is that wood grows in such a way that its fibers and strands can create enormous amounts of torque on a blade, which is especially hard on the grind where the blade is at its thinnest. It is far more reasonable to gather small wood, or use your knife to make enough shavings to get a fire going, then add larger wood later. 👍
@@Mikey-ym6ok really easily , i have this knife and did all of these tests but more carefully , it didnt even loose because i didnt hit the handle , when it finally loosed up i took the capsule out , and tightened the nut inside the handle , boom thats how you do that

The big serrations on the back near the handle is for sheet metal/aluminum. The Air Force survival knife used it for pilots so they could salvage a wrecked aircraft for shelter and etc.

"Sigh" If you are in a survival situation and are treating your only knife as an ax Darwin says you should avoid breeding. As to throwing, pick up a rock. The rock will do more damage and if you miss you still have a knife. Tools have specific usage sets. You can't chop down a tree with a tire iron but that doesn't make it a bad tire iron.
I was always taught that the ridges on the back of hollow handle survival knives are so that if you use it as a spear by screwing it onto a broom handle or stick the pig can't run up the spear as easily.
The serrations on the actual Air Force Survival knife is for cutting through plexi-glass. It can be used for wood but it isn't the best. As for this knife! For $7 I was absolutely amazed at what the knife was able to do! You sold me!
Someone once pointed out, knives rarely break because of the steel its made out of, it's how you treat them, take a cheapo chinese kitchen knife for example, if all you do is cut food with it, it'll out live you, but if you decide to throw it into a plywood target, it'll break
Those serrations at 1:30 are used to disembowel animals once they have been skinned, You are supposed to stab them as deep as possible. life upwards on the knife so that the animals intestines will snag the serrations, then pull the knife out thus pulling the intestines out with it
If that’s your only knife then it’s the best there is. Now for basic survival it’s just fine. The cuts on the back of the blade are for scaling fish. I mean that knife has some usefulness in it for survival and it’s by far better than nothing.
For 7 bucks, that knife is honestly a nice one bc id never set my expectations high on something that cheap but it didnt break at all during the tests. It was still all intact at the end of the video soo you really never could tell how much that blade could take. I like the knife.

I got this for like my 7th birthday, 15 now and the only problem I had with the knife (after plenty of use) is the threads on the water proof compartment have worn down so it’s no longer waterproof
Most useful thing I could imagine with this thing is making a spear of it as the handle is hollow and it can be fixed with some rosin on a stick in case you have to defend yourself in a survival situation....
They suck... Hey...Something that you might appreciate. I used to have a really great ( circa 1984) hollow handle survival knife ( that was stolen out of my truck). AS the main survival thing that I was concerned about that I figured I could keep in the hollow handle was matches. so I packed it full of " strike anywhere's" ... to maximize the amount I put some head side up and some head side down. It occurred to me that friction between the screw on handle cap and the heads of the strike anywhere matches meant that I was carrying a potential pipe bomb on my belt. ?? I ended up drilling a hole in the cap, inserting a bolt with silcon sealing. and adding a package of combination Flash powder and nitro powder and about 4 inches of fuse. Giving me an emergency grenade.
In a self-defence situation, you should not throw your knife, for three reasons. 1. You are very unlikely to hit your attacker. 2. You will no longer have the knife. 3. Your attacker can pick up the knife, and use it against you.
Considering the ROI, this is a good "get it and forget it" knife for someone who isn't in to bush craft or survival to have in their emergency car kit. if it lasts 3 days, that could save your life...don't get me wrong, this knife is nothing I would buy, but I think it is a bit unfair to buy the cheapest knife you can find and then point out all the downsides and flaws and not include the benefits of having this resource when needed...Great video, and I enjoy your other videos!!
