I’m wanting to become a biology teacher, so it’s nice to have videos like these.

I commented earlier this year on your “pathways” video. I was interested in teaching Earth science, but was concerned that no positions would open in my area. Turns out, there were two secondary ES positions open in my county & the first interview was apparently a success! I have an interview with superintendent soon 🙌🏼 If things work out, I’ll have my very own Earth science class this fall! Stoked to watch more of your videos. Thank you (and so many others) for praying into this 🤠

Oh my goodness, congratulations!! That's so exciting to hear! Best of luck to you! I'll try to put out more content soon; I might switch to blogs, not sure. This year's been hectic and I've had no time to film or edit, but I'll try to film something soon! I think it's been over a year since I posted, yikes!

may i ask what your steps into becoming a bio teacher were, im very interested in bio but im almost out of highschool and have no idea where to start

Hello Thalia! I’m earth science, but the process is very similar! If you’d like to teach, I’d recommend an education bachelors degree in your subject. I got my degree in adolescent education which was great to teach me teaching strategies and how to create lessons in my content area. At the end of your degree, most likely junior and senior year, you’ll have to take certification tests (the type depend on the state/country you’re in). There’s a few other ways as well but that’s my recommendation if you know you want to be a teacher! Good luck!

did you have any issues with the kids messing with the fish tank? how'd they like it?

I didn’t, but this was also during hybrid when I had only a few kids in the building. I didn’t do it my second year because the fish tank was too large and was requiring me to do too much work. I’m sure the students would have loved to help, but it still was a process! Overall, they didn’t mess with it. They thought it was the coolest thing and loved to feed the fish! I had students in other teacher’s classroom and said I had the coolest room because of the fish tank which was so nice to hear after the amount it had cost! Definitely give it a go, but my recommendation is to start on the smaller side and If you enjoy the tank, work your way to a larger one!

One more thought: while the salt water fish were really cool, I actually had more fun with the Molly fish (you can convert these freshwater fish to saltwater) because they were more active and less likely to hide. They also spawned more easily which was cool from a biology perspective. And they are way cheaper!
