    I think you're right, sometimes you just have to say no, even though the fomo is telling you that you will regret not buying the newest thing. Tackling the backlog is the way to do it. I decided to skip 10th ed 40K specifically so I don't get anymore 40k stuff right now. Your necromunda videos are great though man, I have been watching them and love seeing them. it's helped inspire me to get my stuff built and painted.

    I resonate with your last point. Me and a bunch of friends have switched from 40k to Necromunda and I think it's ridiculous that they do such limited runs on the new releases.
    Riddle me this; how do you get hold of the official template markers? Answer; buy the £100 starter set.... that's been out of stock online for months. How do you buy the dice for your chosen gang? Ebay.... for exorbitant prices. God forbid you want to make a table of official Necromunda scenery; they did one release of the seperate walls and gates box. One.... when Gang War originally released! (shout out TT Combat; their MDF terrain is awesome, infinitely moddable, easy to build and affordable).
    Gee Dubz seem to make it as hard as possible to actually get into their other games... then question why so few people play them.

    • @MiniatureGameMontage
      @MiniatureGameMontage  4 місяці тому

      If you need some templates I can send you some. I have extras. :) The mold system must be really flexible nowadays. It used to be, "we spent all this money making molds so we'll sell the product for 15 years." Now it's "we make the mold, we're only making so much and moving to something else."

    Thanks for sharing! Makes me feel a little better that I'm not the only one who is into too many games at once and almost hopelessly behind.
    I particularly liked what you said about thinking you will have the models painted up and on the table when you buy them and completely forgetting about painting times and the backlog at that moment. In clear moments I realize I am completely deluding myself about what I can get done. But then the next shiny product gets announced or the next MESBG model rotates out of production and there I go again.

    Hello Jimmy!
    You are not the only one there, please feel alright.
    Nobody could sit so many chairs, so you have to decide what should be abandoned. Rule of 20\80 is completely fits here - there's one game, which gives you most of the fun. Focus on it.
    I had same thoughts last year and made a decision focus on Necromunda, best GW game so far. And I feel better now, I feel inspired, no burnouts, etc.
    Set yourself free of this and be a happy man!
    Cheers)

    I hear you on the FOMO with the releases. For me my main games are Warhammer Fantasy (Old World), Necromunda, Mordheim, and sometimes Blood Bowl. I do like using other minis from other games to support these. I also like to have everything painted before playing them on the table. The only problem is I don't really have to game right now, which is killing me.

      I'm a painted before playing kinda guy as well and maybe that's my problem. But I buy these boxes with these beautifully painted minis on the front. That's what I envision and want. That's what I'm sold in my head but the reality of getting it there is taxing. Thanks, bud!

    I can relate to this I used to collect 40K and whfb years ago and then life happened and I drifted from the hobby. I returned to the hobby again through the 40K imperium Hachette magazine and enjoyed returning back into the hobby. The only difference this time is that I am now grown have money and therefore disposable income I quickly fell for the FOMO driven model of GW and now have a mountain of MESBG, Necromunda, 40K, kill team and most recently the 2 big old world boxes. I think last month I managed to finish up just the 12 warriors of minas tirith and a squad of termies from the leviathan box and literally told myself I would not buy anymore until I had worked through some of my pile. I’m now trying to set aside 1 to 2 hours a day to dedicate to painting and will reward myself with something nice when I’m at least halfway which could take a while lol. This video came up at just the right time and stopped me from purchasing yet another combat patrol box. Instead of picking up my debit card I picked up my paintbrush 🖌️ 😂

    You're right, you manage to play and paint a lot! My suggestion is select the game systems you enjoy the most, stick with them and sell off the rest. You can then focus on what you love, look at the other systems and models and have the strength to say thats cool, but I don't have the time, because lets be honest GW don't make the best games. I hope you can find the systems you like the best! Your final comment on not being able to get stuff is all so true but if you'e happy with what you have than that isn't a problem in fact it solves the probelem if you can't have then you won't need it.

    Couldn’t agree with this more. I’m guilty of buying more stuff when I’ve got a back log in reality I’ll probably never finish. GW get me with the limited releases or the made to order stuff. As you mentioned, if you don’t jump on it there and then you would end up paying 4x the cost via eBay. When I look at my hobby time across the different aspects like painting, gaming, building etc I realise the thing I spend the most time in is the act of buying 🤦‍♂️
    I guess it’s better then other vices though, although I’m sure drugs or alcohol would be cheaper 😂

    Whew, I feel ya. I’m strictly a Kill Team player and tournament organizer, but I was very close to grabbing the Leviathan box. What stopped me was the realization that buying that would bring me over a threshold where I might reasonably never finish all the models in my pile of shame (I have a lot of teams in the backlog and I’m a glacially-slow/meticulous painter). That epiphany put my mind at ease, and I’m (mostly) content to continue working on the plastic I’ve already got.

      Thanks for sharing! I don’t regret any of my Kill Team boxes. They will get painted before Levithan as I see it. I’ll probably have the starter boxes from 9th and 10th still on sprues when 11th comes out. 😂

    Great video as always..
    Preach Brother.. i been on the Gw train since the 90s and its been a great but bumpy ride. Buying in to the latest game/faction is great fun but trying to build, paint, and play takes alot of time that most of us just dont have. I say get what you want ( within reason of course) from what ever game youre into at the time and just enjoy the hobby. There are people with whole storage buildings full of comic books and classic cars... we can have a closet or extra room full of minis painted or not.😅

    I've only been in the wargaming hobby for the last 2ish years, but I've only kept my sanity by being VERY selective of what I buy. I play Crisis Protocol mainly and I decided to only get characters that I have some link to or that makes me feel excited to paint and play. That cut out over half of the offered characters. I'm thinking about getting into Kill Team, but I know I will only own a few teams for a variety of reasons. I'm looking to get into Relicblade as well, but that game is nice because the available models are so low and the list building so flexible you only really need to get figures that you like and want to play. I don't have a channel to make content for, but I think you could dial in the games you really want to play.
    My friends and I go back to the old Marie Kondo phrase, "Does it bring you joy?" if so, we keep it and play it. If it doesn't, then we shelve it or sell it.

  • @dokb1942

    I am with you, my wall of shame has felt like its never ending the fear of missing out drives a lot of us in the hobby to keep buying. Honestly I am glad that 10th edition changes to Space Marines pissed me off to the point of quitting the game, I don't want to play Ultramarines painted like Raven Guard so until GW releases an actual Raven Guard supplement/codex I will only buy Necromunda from them and so far it has helped cut down on the wall just not the storage issue. The other thing is that they keep changing the rules and unit options to the point they almost force you to buy more if you want to field WYSIWYG.

    • @MiniatureGameMontage
      @MiniatureGameMontage  4 місяці тому +1

      Yeah the WYSIWYG reminds me of some of the Kill Teams that launched. You couldn't make all the operatives unless you bought multiple boxes. So I just proxy if I need to. The competitive side is really driving a lot of the rules changes, balancing, etc. That's a whole beast to itself.

    • @dokb1942
      @dokb1942 4 місяці тому +1

      @@MiniatureGameMontage The competitive scene seems to have taken over the whole of how 40k is played and is the biggest reason I really started loosing interest in 9th edition... 10th killed it for me. The competitive take over could be a whole video in itself lol. Keep up the great work.

    I totally relate. It's just not realistic for anyone to keep up with all the different game systems GW puts out. I
    've decided to limit myself to one big 40K army and a full on Zone Mortalis board for Necromunda with a few gangs that I could run a small campaign. Even that is getting insane. Necromunda boards are a rabbit hole.

  • @TheOmnissiah
    @TheOmnissiah 4 місяці тому

    I've done nothing for 40k in years now - the last thing I got was the Death Guard - Primaris Marines starter set (right when they were redoing all the Death Guard stuff). I still have all my stuff (which is, a LOT, much of which is unpainted), which I'll break out when I'm home from school for apocalypse games with my friends *maybe* once a year. Not having these things close to me is probably helpful, so I feel less of a need to 'stay ahead.'
    The things I've been much more up-to-date with (but which I have still 'fallen behind' on the last couple years) is Necromunda, + a couple KillTeam boxes to use in Necromunda (Navy, Kroot, Arbites). I've made the conscious decision to *not* get into Ash Wastes campaigns (at least no time soon) to easily avoid all that, and I realize I have enough thing I need to paint, and not enough opportunities to actually play to try and just say "oou, cool" when new stuff comes out, and then move on.
    A dissertation, a kid, and the most expensive rent costs of anywhere in the country are not a good combination to 'keep up.' I do find the satisfaction of finishing painting things is a really helpful goal to reward yourself with a new set, but I've never really stuck to that (as evidenced by my largely unpainted 40k models). It is easier though when you focus on one thing (Necromunda sans Ash Wastes for me). You stay in the universe, but you don't get sucked into the black hole of cost and time.
    Another thing - which I haven't been able to do recently, but otherwise have been consistently doing for the last decade - is running 40k RPGs. You can use your models if you want, you stay in the universe, and it costs next to nothing.

      I also have the advantage of a friend who was reached the "I'm done painting, what do I do?" point who just offered to paint my orks (I have like 7k pts of Orks, so that is BIG deal), but maybe this kind of thing could happen more often? Friends helping friends paint things (when on the big scale)? I know the desire to have your own stuff bear your own hand in terms of painting, but after the 100th Boy, its easy to say 'fuck this, wanna help?' Less so of course with a small Necromunda gang obviously

    "How do you keep up?"
    I don't 😂
    Long answer: is a pitty but the time for the hobby is not as much as some of us would like to.
    I have on my backlog: Necromunda gangs, Blood bowl teams, WHF armies, WH40K armies (3 to 5 armies),...but not only GW... miniatures for role playing games, minis from old games (Confrontation, Carnevale), board games (zombicide, HQ,...), minis just for exibition,...
    And despite of it I had to pass on several cool miniatures that GW brought that I just wanted for the shake of painting them and having on shelves (the black coach, the new ghoul king, 1000 different Chaos knights, Pokemons of AoS...)
    In the end we just need to try to keep up just to be proud ourselves to have the things the we have painted and try to lower the ammount on sprues. 🤗

    I gave up on GW when 9th Ed. 40K came out. Its not just the new models, its needing to buy and learn the new rules and codex's every three years. I wouldn't mind as much if I thought that each edition was an improvement of the game, but I feel they change things just to sell more products.
