Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

.308 is middle of the road. That's why it's the most popular large caliber. It's an all around good package.
But it isnt.
@@robertgalloup6171 really? Which sells more?
@@robertgalloup6171It absolutely is. Cheap, effective, and a million different factory loads if you need something specific. Also available on almost every platform imaginable.
Is it the best for 1000m shots? No. Does anyone hunt at 1000m? Also basically no.
@@humblehunk9022 LMFAO
@@robertgalloup6171 Cheers!
I usemy 7mm-08, 139gr monolithic bullets @ 2900 fps to hunt mule deer, black bear, elk and moose. Plus it loves to ring steel easily to 800m. Great cartridge
I have a7mm-08 Remington 700 which I bought in 1988. Love that gun.
Why I shot .270 Win in an area were many were shoting 30-06 or 300Win Mag. My first deer kill with the .270 convinced my BIL to get a .270, he'd been a die hard .308 guy. He dropped an 8pt in Ark. where it stood without hitting anything vital. Hydro shock has a deadly effect, especially that smaller weight Winchester whitail load, 3000 or more ft/sec has an impact!
I’ve been a long time fan of the 7mm08. It’s unfortunate that it hasn’t reached the popularity of the 6.5cm. I feel that it is a superior cartridge with the wider variety of bullet weights.
Especially if you go with heavier 160-168gr class bullets the 7mm-08 is just the 6.5 Creedmoor with more energy and a larger bullet diameter. With a 162gr ELD-X the 7-08 carries more velocity and energy all the way out to 600yds which is further than I'd hunt with either cartridge anyway.
Ive shot a 7mm08 since moving up from a 223 that got too small for me. Theyre amazing rifles and perfect for anybody, new shooter to everyday shooters. People who wanna do any long range shooting (obviously other than competing but you could probably get away with it) and people who only shoot when theyre hunting. Its just an all around great round
Read about the history of the 7mm/08. It was a wildcat cartridge design used for competition rifle shooting. Remington standardized the dimensions and began chambering the Model 700 rifles for it. I believe that was around 1972 or so. Other firearms companies made or make rifles chambered for that cartridge, so it’s definitely been accepted as a good, effective round.
I really like mine for whitetail deer hunting here in Michigan. It gets the job done with no problems. 🦌
Cruz Busetti, my comment wasn’t meant as criticism of yours, just to inform others who were curious about the origins of the 7mm/08 cartridge.
Love 280 Remington.
Amen!
Amen!
I use a 7mm 08 for deer elk and antelope
Thanks kanye, very cool!
Thanks Kanye, very cool!
I hunt with an 1895 Mauser in 7mm Mauser.
7mm Mauser (aka 275 Rigby). Developed in 1892, it inspired and parented countless new cartridge designs and is STILL an accurate, flat, powerful round capable of taking any game in North America.
I've had both. I prefer the 7mm08 in a lightweight hunting rifle. It's just cool to have one if youre a gun lover.
The number of people I’ve met who can squeeze the difference out of 7mm08 vs .308 is almost zero. And those few I have met probably shoot the .308 anyways. Even if you load your own ammo the .308 is simply more available, for now. Anyone who has hunted more then 1/2 dozen times either broke a rifle or knows someone in their group who has. We also know someone who forgot their bolt or ammo back at home. Simple and common are what you want when you mix rain, mud, blood and snow with Murphy.
I like gun calibers that are the most common and the ammo is easy to find. 22, 9mm, 38 special, 357 mag, 44mag, 30-30, 308, 30-06, 300 win mag, 20 ga, 12ga. There may be others but these are easy to by ammo for.
Love 7mm-08, have 4 of them
Ever tried 7mm rem mag I like it alot more.
I bought one a few years ago.. Iv shot several bucks with it and my dad has too.. he really likes it because of low recoil. It does well and I like it. but I haven't seen it drop one yet. Usually run 30 to 60 yards..
@@tl1635 I have a 7mm-08 and 243. I've dropped deer with both but the 243 dropped every deer I ever shot with it. My old man's 30-06 rarely ever dropped a deer immediately. If you don't like to track them I would go 243 any day.
I love my 308. Easy to load and good bullet weight.
i have a rifle in 7mm rem mag which is same case and bullet but with lots more powder. i was getting 3500fps with handloads but now u can get rounds for about $1 a piece that hit 3150- 3400
Great video. I finally just had the ballistic coefficient lightbulb go off. I get it. Thanks so much!
I think people forget that we used to collect game with sharpened sticks. Deer don't care that you shot them from long distance or if you had a cross wind all they care about is that they're currently not feeling so well
Thanks for the info Ron 👍👍👍👍 your the best My friend 👏👏👏👏
You can find that 308 cartridge just about anywhere selling ammo. Military rounds are found around the world.
That’s why every single sporting goods store has 556 and 308. I don’t have to dig to find ammo like I would if I had a 270.
Always wanted a 7mm-08 in. 788 Remington or BDL DM or a 260 Remington both awesome rounds!
When 6.5 creedmoor was new I remember hearing people say they wouldn't shoot a deer with it past 300 yards because it would be immoral with such a weak round.
What I found hilarious about this is 300 yards was about the distance the most 6.5cm started having more energy than 308 at least with the rounds that were available at the time.
I like my 7mm-08 a lot but its not really fair to compare the two calibers using 150 grain bullets. In my opinion the advantages to the 308 are in its 165 - 180 grain projectiles, and of course, like everyone else has commented-- ammo availability and price of the 308 is more favorable.
Exactly. When comparing calibers the only fair comparison is comparing by bullet SD not bullet weight. 150 gr. in .284 is closer to 165 gr in .308
The winner of the nationao f class a few years ago won. Shooting 220 grain eldm in 308 win. So yes. The 308 win is still a great viable cartridge today.
I’ve avoided getting a 7mm-08 for years because the ammo is so hard to get. Between my 243 Winchester, 308 Winchester, and 6.5 CM, I don’t really have opening. Here in the Northeast, we seldom engage deer at more than 150 yards. Often, less than 100 yards.
More a reloaders cartridge, imo.
Talk about 7x57 mauser...cuz I inherited one. Lol. And I dont know Jack about it.
The 7/08 definitely recoils less. 140 gr in a 7/08 is best all around deer cartridge in my opinion. Accurate, mild recoil, mild muzzle blast, everybody makes a rifle for it, plentiful ammo, what's not to love?
Buy 308 so much easier to find Ammo my friend. I mean I haven't caught up with a deer to kut it,s throat to feed my family
Lol
yeah, but if you load your own you can get some insane numbers out of the 7. ntm basically limitless bullets
That's funny because my 30-06 bolt rifle from the 1964 Sears catalog seems to work just fine on everything.
Yes it may work but a model 700 polymer chassis will be way better for most people. If you can handle the kick
30-06 and .270 are great choices.
@@dalejrjunior1298 I don't think there's any perceptible recoil difference between the 30-06 and its descendants, or between different stock materials.
won a nice, Savage Axis .270 in a drawing, I'm happy with it. The Stainless action and polymer stock are nice for Michigan's frequently crappy weather.
@@joelee2371 a 7mm rem mag has way more powder than .308 which is its basis. and yes a polymer stock kicks harder cus it weighs less. the less a gun weighs the harder it kicks
Cool just like every other wildcat round. I've shot plenty of elk with a. 308
Availability on 308 versus 7mm 08 ammo is probably about 500 to 1 right now and the 7mm 08 is a whole lot more money. I have both and a 6.5 paper poker and nothing's been out lately but the 308
I'm a big fan of "middle of the road" AKA sensible/effective. Also I can find reasonably priced ammo for it...
I love my .308.
I love the middle of the road comments. My dads Model 88 that was passed to me has taken bear, elk, buffalo, antelope to varmits. All with a fixed power scope. Learned to shoot by having to adjust for windage and elevation. Not reliant upon all the data and making constant scope adjustments. The 308 is predicatable, think that is why it is still prefered by alot of folks.
wow, if a 7mm08 will do ALL that, deflect less-shoot flatter-etc. Can it also make me a cup of hot coffee out in the field? Then you can truly say it does everything!
Yep both of these rounds make excellent deer hunting cartridges but for me I prefer the .308
I have and always will stand by 30-30 when it comes to deer or elk hunting and homemade dumbbell slugs for my 12ga
Do what works for you. Folks are overthinking hunting tools
Lotta options
Are those accurate outnof a shotgun?
Come on. Yes 30-30 works fine with in its limits.. i'v shot deer with them.. But you know there are better rounds out there.
@@tl1635 context is everything... Where are we? What is the weather like? What else might I need this rifle for?
.308 is my favorite round. People want something different but if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. If a deer doesn’t drop when you hit it with a .308 then you missed.
That's absolutely true...
Which is why I'll stick with my trusty, Belgian Browning B.A.R. in .30-06. 😉
(If you haven't tried it, don't knock it. 😀).
Whatever. The debates about gun calibers never end. Next story please
7mm08 because I like the recoil. Or lack of.
I hunted for years with a 7x57 modified Mauser. Still own it still love it. Switched to a Ruger American in 7-08. Lighter. modern. I like it. Difference? no. just preference. Thank you, Ron you are top shelf.
A 7mm08 is a great caliber but its still a son of the the 308 just like the 6.5 is.
Ron and his BC cracks me up since most deer are shot well with 100 yards it just doesn't matter what the BC of a deer rifle is but BC is the end all of everything to him.😮
300 Savage, 308, 7-08, 270, 30-06, 7 Mauser, 35 rem, 357 win, all get the job done.
I always liked the .308, great cartridge. I found a great deal for a Kimber 84m in 7mm-08, so I bought it. I now love the 7mm-08, I hand load it with 154 gr. Hornaday IB bullets and have used it for one shot kills on a few mule deer, a pronghorn and even a cow elk. It's a great cartridge!
Love them both but I gotta go with my old 308
I honestly love to show off a little with my buddy’s using a few of my 308’s, shooting @ 1000 yards in prone. We start with a 12” steel target that gets spray painted. Then go a little further out with a 15” target. They shoot big Magnums and such. I just like a challenge, so I have learned to shoot a 308w and similar at Long range with pretty impressive results. Don’t get me wrong, I have the Magnums as well, and in between, also a 220 Swift FABRIKEN Competition. Has two triggers, one to set and the second is literally set in ounces! Less than a slight amount of pressure she sends it. I will use a finger nail file to make my index finger more sensitive for her 😉. Great video.
54r is my favorite
thank you nice info!
I have the last 7.08 Browning ever made hands down favorite for white tails
I went to Walmart for the first time in a long time looking at their sporting good and they had 350 legend rounds stacked 3 or 4 rows deep. . Loads of them.
I was so happy to see this. .308 is easier to buy ammo for as well. ♥️
Here I've been able to get 7.62x51 149 grain for 25 dollars a box, I buy 100 rounds of it just to plink with. living up here in Alaska I usually opt for 180 grain lead bullets or barnes ttsx 168 grain.
@@Rustyer266 Lucky you to be in Alaska. Man I wish I lived there. 🤘♥️🤘♥️
@@hoosierdaddy2308 Its got pros and cons overall its a nice place
@@Rustyer266 I'm sure that's true. Like all places I would guess. ♥️
The difference? Good luck finding 7mm08 on the regular. Don't care if your local store carried 2 boxes yesterday, you can find 308 anywhere and it will take down an elk with the right shot placement and staying within your limits. Really think people forget how much power is in 308. Just hit a piece of steel with it.
I'll have you know they had four boxes...
I can buy 7-08 all day online….that combined with reloading for it negates any perceived local scarcity…..
What about the .270 win? Are these good for deer?
🗣yes and ELK too.
I have heard the 7-08 called the 308 lite. You get some 30 cal performance with some managable recoil for sensitive shoulders.
Absolutely nailed it
Love them both shoot what you shoot well and go hunting
I have a 30-06, but it's an old Sako, so I'm thinking of getting a new TiKKA rifle in the .308. Ammo is widely available, and I probably won't shoot past 300 yards anyway, so I don't need anything fancy. If I do end up needing to shoot very far, I'll get the 300RUM or something.
I love how he sez .308 is middle of the road. It’s a tank of a cartridge for the size. I just got into .308 rifles and I was impressed and he’s just shot them all and it’s meh!? So so. I have so much yet to learn.
308 is a great cartridge. People get too deep into numbers and forget how much power is behind a 308. Might as well throw everything away and make 50bmg the minimum cartridge for everything
7mm rem mag blows the pants of .308
@@WCGwkf .308 is good but when you have 3 seconds to line up a shot on a deer before it fucks off I prefer 7mm cus it shoots flatter so I don't have to wory about wind or distance. Just put the cross hair where I want and it pings right there all the way out to 250 yards
@@dalejrjunior1298 you have no idea what you're talking about..LOL .308 Win is a much more versatile cartridge than the 7mm-08 when hand loading and the 308 will take game cleanly just as far or further than a 7mm-08
@@mapbike 7mm08 and .308 are same case and powder load 7mm uses smaller diameter bullet. I have a 7mm rem mag which is the same as them but hotter powder load and way faster speeds.
7mm08 is impossible to find in Wyoming. And 60bucks a box online.
that's criminal. i dont pay that much for 444 marlin.
Can’t like this enough! Honestly, across the spectrum of cartridges when you make appropriate comparisons most of the differences don’t amount to squat, that includes some of the magnums compared to std cartridges…. Just shows the power of marketing!
Playing Capt’n obvious, availability and cost. Love my Ruger 308 Win.
I knew I liked watching you for a reason pretty much anything that slings a 7mm projectile is better
30-30 and my .270 all I will need.
I do not own any rifle in 308. Kinda wish I did and I can remedy that problem very easily.
My go to cartridges for deer are 30-30 and 7mm08. Both great calibers.
30-30 is readily accessible but the 7mm is a bit harder to find. I'm lucky in that I have a friend that reloads.
I just go all the way with a 7mm WSM. 7mm-08 on steroids.
I like 308 specifically because it's middle of the road though. It's also a third of the price and much more common.
Give me a 270 all day long
I can get ordinance for my 308 anywhere, my 7 is a little harder to come by recently.
I have a Remington 700 VTR that had a recall. It seems that with a round in the chamber, on safe can actually fire on its own. I wonder if this is still covered. I've had for about 20 years, and only had 30 rounds run through it. It's 308 also.
My brother in law has a one just like it in 30-06. With his the second you released the safety switch it would fire. It’s a dangerous deal.
was a problem with too much super glue in the trigger assembly. i dont want guns built with glue in the action. may be too late to get fixed recall. have a good smith install a good aftermarket trigger.
A difference that makes no difference is no difference.
With 7mm-08 available, I don’t understand the 6.5 craze??
I like the .308 because of the semi auto AR platform it can come in. I've never seen a 7mm 08 AR
Wilson Combat sells AR-10 barrels chambered in 7mm-08 for $279.95 in an 18". A bunch of other people sell them too. Wilson makes good quality stuff.
you can get it, just order a custom barrel.
AND… with a higher sectional density combined with higher retained velocity, 708 will penetrate deeper, making it better for moose and elk.
25-06 is a deer dropper
yup, any caliber works if you put enough behind it and do your part of the job.
Can find .308 & .308 load components more easily. 7-08 is slick though
For me it’s a 30-06
all good, i hunt deer with a Savage in 270, m1a/m14 for "social" use.
I’ve killed 8 bull elk several cows and dozens of deer with my .308. It’s deadly inside 300yds and that’s all I need where I hunt.
30-30 and 30-06 are the 2 best deer hunting guns on the market. 7mm is overkill.
.30-06 is larger diameter, higher velocity, and heavier than the 7mm-08.
300 savage
I love 308
Shot placement. Roosevelt bull elk two years in a row. 7mm-08.
The 7mm-08 Rem has a some slight advantages over the 308 and then the 260 Remington has some slight advantages over both.
Now, supposedly, the ballistic twin to the 260 Rem is the hottest thing on powder. That's the 6.5 Creedmoor.
Ultimately get what you want, learn to use it and you're good to go.
Isn't the key to these rejiggering of ballistics that everybody wants it to feed in an AR lower? Although I suppose the 6.8 x51 abandons this entirely. The whole civilian sector will be left behind.
Remarms bought the name and not the legacy. My paid back order was canceled and not refunded when the company went under. $450 gone. New Customer service told me that they didn't purchase their prior commitments.
Remington died when the company went under.
Remarms does not warranty Remingtons made before the chapter 11 and in accordance with their website they do not warranty newly made firearms. "RemArms LLC has elected not to provide any written-warranty, either "limited" or "full", rather than to attempt to comply with the provisions of the Magnuson-Moss Act and the regulations issued thereunder. There are certain implied warranties under state law with respect to sales of consumer goods. Firearms returned to RemArms for service will be evaluated to determine if services will be provided at a fee or free of charge."
They have no business ethics and deserve to go under again.
That's the very reason I never have or never will own anything with Remington's name on the side.
Every firearm owner should know this, spread this info, and make sure to never purchase any of their products again.
The best 140 grain 7mm bc bullet is the tipped game king with a bc of .545 a 178grain eldx bullet has a bc of .535 hardly any difference 👍🏼
I love the 7mm08, but ammo is impossible to get for it and federal now makes only 4 different cartridges in 7mm08. They made 8-9 like 3 years ago. There’s only about 10 different manufacturers that make a 7mm08 cartridge at all anymore. I personally prefer the 7mm over 6.5cm and it’s sad to see it fading away. I will probably switch to a 308 or 30-06 because of ammo eventually
Deer down either way. LOL 😂
There is so much more now with powder development.
out to typical range that deer or taken which is 100yds or less, I like the 308 Win. because as reloader the bullet type selection is way better for the .308 bullet than for the .284 bullet dia.
For Texas size whitetail deer I like 110gr to 125gr loaded Hot for an extreme energy dump in the deer body with my goal being NO EXIT WOUND so the deer absorbs all the energy, the deer will not take one single step and the kill is an immediate clean harvest.
I only use heavier bullets if the shot range is gonna be beyond 200 yds. and I have found that in the 308 Win. the Hornady 155gr A-Max bullet does and excellent job out to 300 yds. which isnt actually a "hunting bullet" according to Hornady.
Winchester had the .243, and .284 in the model 88 complimenting the .308 60 years ago, so the 7mm/08 seems redundant.
If you were to only buy 1 rifle your whole life. One rifle to hunt game in North America, one rifle for target practice, one rifle to last 30+ years and 15,000 plus rounds … the .308 would be the most logical choice. It’s just good at everything and there’s not a lot of downside.
Of course you’re allowed to buy as many rifles as you want so enjoy all the flavors!
If your just talking deer.
Why not 243?
Still the same case. Just even lighter and faster projectiles
7mm08 and 308 basically the same except i cannot find ammo fot 7mm08.
7mm-08 is literally one of the most underestimated calibers there are. Id rather be able to knock off a elk at 400 yards vs 300. thats what it comes too if you hunt
Ammo availability for the 308 will trump 7mm-08 all day everyday!
Will your shoulder know the difference?
Don't faster twisting bullets drift more in the wind?
They do exhibit more spin drift, but that is not the same as wind deflection. You want just enough twist rate to stabilize the longest bullet you want to shoot. But there is a LOT of leeway. The 30-06 for instance, usually sports 1:10" twist and can nicely stabilize everything from a 100-grain plinker to a 220-grain round nose.
At the ranges most are hunting, the .308 is probably more effective. More surface area = more energy retained in the target
so the cost of factory should be close or is it?
Just go to 243 best of both worlds
I have a browning a bolt (in pfp) it’s in 7mm 08 the deer in pfp dropped as soon as the bullet hit him
Either one is a good caliber. Remember its the bullet that does the work, not so much the caliber. Buy good ammo, and make good shots. It will die. I've never had a problem with a Nosler or a Barnes.
Is 243 good for white tail in Texas? It’s my first gun got it for Christmas
I think it is. I've taken many, many whitetails and mule deer with 243 Win, including many in TX. Just put the bullet in the vitals and break out your gutting knife.
Tried to explain this concept to 30-06 guys who poke fun at my .270 Winchester more than once 🙄 "Look, both cartridges are pretty much the same overall length, literally the same parent case; mine just shoots flatter than yours because the bullet has a better ballistic coefficient" 😖 "But .30 caliber is a bigger bullet than .277 caliber" 🤦♂️"With rifle calibers bullet weight, bullet construction and velocity are far more important than bullet diameter when it comes to terminal ballistics"- "no...my bullet is bigger"
