There is not a single better feeling on this planet of earth than wasting time staying up late for no reason, only to find that hickok has uploaded a new video. No longer is my lack of sleep meaningless!
I feel like the fact you got into a5s late in life, I just turned 21 and bought my first shotgun at a gun store (a late 50s Belgian grade 1) and although I’m 120 years late to the party I’m still very much proud to own one
Same here just turned 23 and got myself a model 11 best purchase I think the old wood furniture is beautiful and reminds me of a mafia street sweeper shotgun
In my 43 years I have found a lot of great things in yard sales and as a collector who knows the rarity of some things I find I always think I’ll never top some yard sales finds. I have found and made lots of money from vintage babe Ruth cards and shoeless Joe Jackson cards and I even find gold and silver plus one 30-$40,000 1969 rolex but I only have found a few guns and none of them were to special. One day I found a 1936 sweedish mouser bolt action and got it for $100 then a few years later found the bayonet which I got in trade for an old Ax,then I found a 1908 iver .22 seven round revolver and a old S&W .32 revolver from around the 1920s-40 and both in good shooting conditions as long as they are not modern hot rounds but aside from those 3 guns I had not found any other guns. Just last summer I was tooling around Vermont and found an old lady getting her yard sale on. She was selling a lot of her deceased husband stuff and all the cool stuff was already gone but she did forget to put one gun out for sale. I asked if she had any guns and she said yes I have one more I think and she had me go in the back garage among all her knickknack trash that only old women collect and there I found a near brand new browning 12 gauge that as glistening in the sun after I brought out to her to haggle. She knew NOTHNG of guns and I ended up giving her double what she asked for and got it for $200. The gun would only hold 2 rounds plus one chambered because it was fitted with a plug which I guess was according to the law the most you could hunt with so I made sure to take that stupid plug out so it could be filled to capacity. The semi auto browning was not your typical 12g it had a hunting scene engraved on both sides with a bear hunting scene and the work is impeccable and cost more then the gun but the old gal didn’t know if her husband got it that way which I’m guessing he did and paid a pretty penny for it. The work looked very German as if it were a gift to some dignitary and like no other I have ever seen in this specific gun.whoever did the carving and engraving was a true artist and you could not ask for a better job the gun is so beautiful it’s something you only see when gifted to an important person or a rich person is board with there money.
First of all, DAMN good shooting! I bought an old Victorian house in New Hampshire 22 years ago. I cleaned out the attic one day, and found a Belgian made Browning A-5, which has the same woodwork as yours, but earlier safety, but no engraving. I absolutely LOVE this shotgun! Excellent action, softer recoil than most 12 gauged shotguns, great accuracy, and a super coolness factor. It was the first semi auto shot shotgun ever manufactured. It was used by the U.S. Military from WWI through Vietnam. Viva la Humpback!
Shotgun slugs: the closest thing you can get to a man-portable railgun in real life. Heaven help what's on the other end of them, because they just don't stop.
I inherited my dad's A5 Light Twelve (made in Belgium) that he bought new in 1963. It is a beautifully machined work of art and deadly accurate. I set aside my trap guns at turkey shoots (clay targets at extreme distance) as the fixed full choke on this A5 is very tight. Using 3 3/4 drams, 1 1/2 oz buffered 4 shot, it pulverizes targets out to 110 yards, not kidding. Talk about a turkey hunting load! Also does very well with 1 1/4oz pigeon loads (Rem factory) pushing 1,300fps and will turn that clay bird to smoke out to 60+ yards. Go big or go home. Thanks dad for all the great memories hunting with you. RIP Marine.
Love when John zooms in on the targets! Being able to see the slugs as they impact and the wads falling off around half way up the hill. Just amazing to watch.
10:20 "Wow... One of these days I'm gonna get me a car without a muffler, and I'll be so cool... So cool!"" Came for the firearms, stayed for the wit. Life is definitely good!
Browning A5s, Remington Model 11s and Franch AL 48s (all the same design) are the best semi auto shotguns ever designed. I have a Mag 12 for water fowling, turkey hunting and deer hunting and a Sweet 16 for upland birds. They never fail.
moved to a small town and was pleasantly surprised to see they had a trap club at the highschool i did not know they were still around would go next year if not for job corps
It took me a little while to get used to "the hunchback". My dad had one and when he passed that gun is now in my posession. Made in Belgium '58 and shoots like new. And now I love how it looks 😊👍
I have a '73 A5, Belgian, vented barrels, and it's twin sister the auto .30-06, mag fed. Some of the best firearms ever made. There may be more convenient, higher capacity, newer tech, etc. But... Nothing more elegant or functional for the money. A5s come in 2 3/4" and 3" mag... We're my father's before mine. I'll never get rid of them.
I live next to an indoor range that only allows slugs on paper targets as far as shotguns go so getting to shoot the A5 is a very special treat for me. It is the smoothest gun I’ve ever used on clays. Love my A5.
If you set the friction rings for heavy and the gun doesn't cycle with 'normal' ammo that's a good thing! You're not over-oiling the mag tube and your recoil spring isn't worn out. It's working perfectly.
My dad has owned a a5 browning for a bit over 50 years that was 2nd hand when he bought it. It's got the open cylinder barrel and in original condition. What an awesome shoty.
Was a nice recognition of the Aussies Hickok. Thanks. My dad wanted one for many years and finally got his hands on a really nice one. Just over a year later he lost it when they banned the semi-autos. :(
I bought a 12 gauge Browning Auto-5 with lots of extras when I was 15, vent rib, middle sight, recoil pad, etc.. I worked several weeks at $1.25 an hour to buy it. Still have it almost 60 years later.
Had one of those Belgium Sweet Sixteens and was a beautiful and fun gun. One to be proud of and I was. Been twenty five years since I've touched it. This video reminds me of good ol days long ago gone.
I just bought my first A5. Wicked shotgun and so ahead of it’s time. Hard to believe it was designed over 120 years ago and is still highly desirable to this day.
I miss mine. My boy fell into wrong crowd as a teen. Ended up selling it for drug money. I hated it so bad. Thank God he has straightened up his act and finally grew up. But I miss my Browning.
That was actually a reply to my comment about the rings being switched around. My dad had the A5 and it just didn't like the low brass. At the time I never knew about changing/removing the rings. His didn't much care for slugs either. In fact it wasn't very good with anything more that 1 Buck.
That is true , the buck special a5 does come with a magnum spring , I got a Belgium a5 light twelve and it cycles light loads even on the heavy Load setting and boy it has no recoil. That’s because it has a lighter spring
Absolutely love the looks of that shotgun. I think it's the beautiful engraving, combined with the rear of the receiver, closest to the stock, which resembles an SKS, and that's one of my favorite non-American surplus rifles. I know that's a far stretch as far as firearms go, but it's the first thought that came to my mind. Also a sweet shooter, and is semi auto, which adds to it's beauty.
To all the anti-gunners who downvoted this video: Mr Hickok represents what the overwhelming majority of gun owners are doing with our guns. Not killing people, not using them for protection in case a drug deal goes bad, not intimidating someone who accidentally cut him off in traffic or stepped on his shoe. He's shooting at targets and having good, clean fun. Personally, more than anything, because I'm usually so busy, I'll take my guns out, look at them, hold them, make a couple of "pew pew!" noises, and put them up. Owning and doing these things makes us happy and harms nobody. Leave us alone.
The Auto5 was SO ahead of its time! In such a short time Browning went from break action, to lever action, to pump action, to SEMI AUTO in just his lifetime! What a brilliant man! Only flaw with the Auto5, the recoil...
Absolutely you can! familiarize yourself with the gun and how to clean and operate. There is a plastic plug in the end of the magazine tube under the forearm stock that if removed, allows 5 shells to be loaded instead of 3. and the recvr end of the recoil spring there is a bronze bushing with a tapered edge which should be flipped end to end on the tube for heavier loads to insure proper cycling. Compress the barrel into the recvr slightly to remove the end cap and again to replace it. Don't drop the forend stock, its fragile when removed. Enjoy.
The old fellow who owned the local gun shop in our area (back in the 70s and 80s) swore by the improved cylinder Sweet 16. Said it was the best and most accurate slug gun you could buy.
I LOVE a slug fest! Like watch a speeding train hit a small car, things MOVE! Thanks for bringing this to us, much appreciated. I would love to see what slugs would do in splitting a hunk of log.
Re: your A-5 front sight. There's a place in Canada that specializes in the obscure. It's called 'Western Gun Parts Ltd.' out of Edmonton AB. I'd be surprised if they didn't have something to help you out.
Do you know of the speedload feature? All you have to do when the bolt is back is put a shell into the mag tube and let it go. It will automatically close the bolt without you having to press the button. This allows you to put 5 in the bottom, in essence.
Quickest way to get a replacement bead for that front sight, buy a Ploy-Choke bead sight, which comes in 3/32" or 5/32" and pop it out and superglue it in the existing sight. That's what I'd do to avoid having a gun smith to do. but I'm a cheap skate, so that would explain that. They come in red, orange, or ivory.
Mr Hickok... I have both the A5 shotgun and the A5 BAR in .30-06, it's awesome, both in mint condition, inherited from my father. Tremendous weapons. For a replacement sight ball, try the craft store and look/ask for white beads for crafting. Should that fail, Brownell's sells fluorescent paints, including white, for painting sights. But, someone somewhere, should have snow white crafting beads that can be super-glued on. Try Amazon if Joanne's crafts or Michael's doesn't have a bead that will work. Now, then... I'm quite familiar with the Browning A5s, here is some helpful info and an important caution for you and the viewers. If the action wouldn't cycle reliably with the friction rings set for high-brass/heavier loads and, presuming the tube and rings are properly lubricated, it simply means the braking system of the action and the genius of the A5 design, is working properly and bleeding off the excess energy of the recoil. So, what you did is right, just switch it back to the "less drag" setting on the friction rings and run it. Just be sure the tube is properly lubricated (see caution below). It also happens, at times, that even though you have the system set up for high-brass shells, it can still cycle low recoil rounds reliably. Always try new loads with the heavy setting, first. If it works, great. Keep it that way because you'll be feeling less recoil. If not, just swap it. It ultimately depends upon the individual loads as to what may work and not. The only thing it can hurt, if you set it up wrong, is your shoulder... lol *Note* Actually, if you fire a lot of high-powered loads with the rings set for low power, you will, eventually, most likely crack the forestock as it uses the wood face of the inner portion of the stock as the final "stop"). *This is important...* When you do use the "low power" setting and place the bottom, steel ring next to the receiver for "storage," be sure to face the bevel towards the receiver and the flat side towards the spring to avoid damaging the ring. When you're getting any A5 ready for hunting season, lots of shooting or after a thorough cleaning... *Be sure* to remove the rings and spring, clean the magazine tube thoroughly and apply a *very light* and even coat of white lithium grease or, barring that, heavy motor oil (something thicker than gun oil) to the length of the mag tube so as to prevent galling of the tube by the friction rings being squeezed too tightly and trying to seize against the tube. DO NOT over lubricate the tube or you will render the braking system useless as the rings won't be able to grab against the magazine tube, resulting in possible forestock damage (and sore shoulders). ;) Happy shooting!
Hickok, The Buck Special is identical to the standard model except for the barrel. The primary reason A-5's have FTF are due to worn or incorrect springs and or incorrect lubrication. The way to properly lubricate an A-5 is to clean the outer magazine tube, wipe dry, then use straight 20 weight NON DETERGENT motor oil to coat tube lightly and wipe off any excess. If you use too much lube, it will not eject properly. The Friction Ring NEEDS some friction. DO NOT USE super duper thin and really slick lubes - again, you do need some friction. Incorrect lube has caused most of the FTF's on the A-5. Pick up a new recoil spring from Brownells. They do fatigue after many years. Make sue you order the correct spring.
Hey Hickok, The auto-5 has a feature called speed loading. When the bolt is back, you just need to load the shell into the magazine and the first shell loaded automatically gets put into the firing chamber. Craig
Pretty funny, actually. Plus, it's good to be supported by anti-gunners. :-) They are so clueless that they think their anti gun / anti freedom nonsense will be swallowed by any of us.
How long have you been a hockey fan. Hockey and shooting. The highest forms of sportsmanship, no doubt. The predators should be afraid of the Penguins however. Crosby, Malik, and Murray make the Penguins the Hickok45 of hockey.
To shoot "high brass" ammunition the magazine tube needs to be really clean. Even if it looks okay use a little solvent. Lightly lube, wipe off all the lube you can with a paper towel. Reassemble with thin ring on top of spring, flat side against spring. Put paired rings into cupped side of thin ring, slide on barrel, forearm and tighten nut hand tight. Check that forearm is properly seated at receiver end before firing. Recheck nut after couple rounds but avoid over tightening. The magazine tube is really the only thing that ever needs to be clean in an A5.

I got one of these Browning G5's Buck Specials back in the early 80's and I absolutely love it. In my opinion, Browning is the best!
lightly oiling the outside of the magazine tube helps cycling with those lighter loads

The sound those chunks of lead make hitting steel is like music to my ears.....Great shotgun and looks really accurate too. Cheers 👍
I bought my A5 10 years ago. Its a 1954 Belgian made and the wood on it is perfect. Beautiful shotgun. Wouldn't part with it for love or money!
"Right on, bro"

I do as well!
My grandpa had 1 of these with a lot of gold engraving in the receiver he had it in this case on the wall I thought it must be the Holy Grail.
So legendary shotgun...maybe the greatest of it's time ...and one of the best until today
Idk what it is but I can sit and watch him blast away for hours. I think it's envy. He's living the dream.
Nothing says "Private Property" like a shotgun. Pretty satisfying guns to use, specially if they are pump action.

Yeah, I don't care for the recoil on them either.
I've had my A5 since 1967. Its my favorite shotgun...pretty, dependable, and always classic.

The only thing it can hurt, if you set it up wrong, is your shoulder... lol
*Note* Actually, if you fire a lot of high-powered loads with the rings set for low power, you will, eventually, most likely crack the forestock as it uses the wood face of the inner portion of the stock as the final "stop").
*This is important...*
When you do use the "low power" setting and place the bottom, steel ring next to the receiver for "storage," be sure to face the bevel towards the receiver and the flat side towards the spring to avoid damaging the ring.
DO NOT over lubricate the tube or you will render the braking system useless as the rings won't be able to grab against the magazine tube, resulting in possible forestock damage (and sore shoulders). ;)
Happy shooting!
You can see the slugs arcing into the gong nice! 👍🏻
WHAT A SHOT. VERY IMPRESSIVE. I NEVER KNEW SLUG GUN TO BE THAT ACCURATE. LOVE YOU SITE.
how can anyone thumbs down this thing? I could watch this all day.
love my 1956 A-5 Light Twelve... my dad said he got it in a trade in 1960 and original owner only put 10 rounds through it.
That kicks like a win mag
Thank you for allowing me to share your enjoyment.
Hickok,
The Buck Special is identical to the standard model except for the barrel.
I couldn't tell you how many of your videos I've seen, but you still make me laugh. Thank you!
I got a Sweet sixteen A5 Browning 1968 love that shotgun. Got it from Franklin Gun Store.
Part of me was hoping it was a sweet 16. Hopefully people can rediscover the 16 gauge before it's too late.
Keihin Bracken; thumbs up bro! I just bought a 1954 Win model 12 16ga. Sweet🙂
Bilge, Nice gun, I hope Hickok does a model 12 vid someday. It's one of the most popular shotguns ever.
The browning A-5 looks beautiful
That is a beautiful shotgun, I love it and these have to be some of my favorite videos you have put online. Thank you sir, oh and you too John
Hey Hickok,
The auto-5 has a feature called speed loading. When the bolt is back, you just need to load the shell into the magazine and the first shell loaded automatically gets put into the firing chamber.

See first video on this shotgun.
GO PREDS! Tough one the other night though back in Pittsburgh. I'll be watching game 6 tomorrow back in Nashville.
Should've found a stuffed penguin somewhere and blown it to smithereens.
if you don't like Hickock 45.. your probably a Communist snow flake!!
Yeah, since the Pens won't start Fleury, go Preds! There are a few of those guys who deserve a cup, from PK all the way to Cody Mac.
WHAT A CROCK!!!! A Michael Moore commercial, right in front of this video! They just don't think before they put commercials in front of your videos!
Pretty funny, actually. Plus, it's good to be supported by anti-gunners. :-) They are so clueless that they think their anti gun / anti freedom nonsense will be swallowed by any of us.
I just enjoy all your videos!! Thank you Hickok45!!!!!!
Midwest gun works, and Brownells both list sights, and sight insert for Browning A-5.Hope that helps, love the video's .Have a great day!
I grew up with Auto 5 , an amazing mechanism, now I have a 12 magnum, and it is hard to control when you shoot Remington 3" slugger.
I think I need one of those in my collection.
I honestly just come to hear that traditional start to these vids "hickock forty fiiiiive" jajaja salutes from phoenix,az
Slugfest has made my week! Gorgeous gun!!
The quality of the gun is very good! Impressive!

Fans of Hickok45! Rejoice! For we now have a discord where we can discuss how much we love him!
You guys bring a smile to my face every upload, Keep on keepin on!
How long have you been a hockey fan. Hockey and shooting. The highest forms of sportsmanship, no doubt. The predators should be afraid of the Penguins however. Crosby, Malik, and Murray make the Penguins the Hickok45 of hockey.
Brennke Original Slug 1 1/8 OZ is what I use for 40 years in my Buck Special Browning .
My grandpa killed a lot of game with this in the Nebraska corn fields to feed his family now I have it in sacramento great pogo stick shotgun.
Slug rounds are one of my favorite rounds
Shows what a high quality firearm can do. Of course he is also a good marksman.
Those slugs really pack a punch!
