  • Today Uncle Stonnie is working with a Wire Haired Pointing Griffon Puppy and teaching children how to teach puppies awesome basic obedience and socialization skills!
The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon (also called the Korthals Griffon and the Griffon d'arrêt à poil dur Korthals in France and Quebec) is a breed of dog used in hunting as a gundog. It is sometimes considered to be Dutch in ancestry, due to the nationality of the breed founder, Eduard Karel Korthals. History records the progression of the development of the breed through Biebesheim am Rhein, Germany where the founder established the Ipenwoud kennel and the breed type was established and then into France where it is now recognized. Others consider the Griffon to be a German breed because Korthals' kennel, Ipenwoud, was located in Biebesheim am Rhein, Germany. It was there for over twenty years that Korthals dedicated his life to the development and perfection of the Korthals Griffon.
The breed is still relatively rare in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom despite long recognition by their respective national kennel clubs, as well as the FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale). The Korthals Griffon is particularly adapted for hunting in thick undergrowth and around water, where its harsh coat is excellent protection. The griffon is used primarily as a hunting dog for upland game birds as well as waterfowl.
    We hope you guys enjoy!

More great knowledge here! As a newb, I'm reminded of potential pitfalls that I could easily fall into.

IN the movie The secret garden the boy says " Let it grow this way" instead of that's wrong.. Telling what to do is always better than pointing out what's wrong, with dogs or kids. Even for we adults. Things happen quicker and more happily if we just give correct directions and skip the "No" part of the instructions, to teach how. No is important to avoid bad behavior, but it's no use if they don't know what TO do, only what not to do. Such a good lesson Uncle Stony. Wish we could all avoid the negative in our communication. I believe our lives would be happier. I love your videos.

We’re planning on getting a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel from a reputable breeder. I really want to work a training program that involves my boys, 8 and 5. Your training style aligns with our parenting style, so I know you’re the right person for us to follow. I’d love something breed-specific from your perspective for Cavaliers. I haven’t seen much of Miley in a while. 😊

How do you train young kids to interact with dogs? My goldens wouldn’t hurt a fly but there have been things that my young kids did to provoke them. Like hugs or being too rough? They’ve done warning growls and occasionally nipped if my kids provoked them too much. Trying to find the balance between training my kids but also what to expect the dogs to tolerate..if that makes sense

Could you do a video on demand barking? I know you always say exercise exercise, but first thing in the morning when I'm getting my dogs food measured out for the day, she is very foos motivated, and she is barking at me while my family sleeps. I really need help with this. 😢

I know this is an older comment but hopefully you’ll see this.
To minimize this behavior at 5:30 in the morning with my puppy, (the night before) I measure out and have the food ready to go inside of the cabinet next to where my pup eats. It shortens the time of frustration and anticipation.
Also at a more calm time of day, practice ‘leave it’ with her dinner, and lots of other impulse control exercises, it’ll improve her impulse control and that will bleed over into other times and situations.

The dog's learned how to follow, people need to learn to lead. I used to tell driving students all the time, don't follow others. Lead. Whether anyone follows you or not is irrelevant. Display leadership qualities and people will begin to follow you. Be the alpha male of the pack and the dogs will follow your lead... until you have to contend with a wannabe alpha who chooses to challenge you for the title. LOL
