Sydney is in the process of being superseded by Melbourne as the largest city. Sydney is on the precipice of losing its position as Australia's largest city, as Melbourne is growing much faster and the two are currently neck and neck. Also Brisbane and Perth are going to catch up to the big two over the next two or three decades. They're talking about Perth more than doubling in a relatively short period of time, which sounds like it will be fraught with trouble, as it is not culturally acceptable to live in highrise flats in that city at all and they've already run out of land. The problem with Melbourne is that the infrastructure can't keep up. A lot of colleagues I speak to are spending 3-4 hours a day in traffic to get to work, while living in a 20km radius of the CBD in Melbourne. Immigration is out of control though - since I was at school the country has admitted as many people as 66% of the original population at the time and that's barely in a generation. The problem is that these people do not distribute themselves evenly across the country and they ONLY congregate in the major cities. Regardless of what people say, Australia is built upon primary indistries like mining and farming. The CBDs are not always the best representation of life in Australia - most people spend the majority of their time in the local suburbs. The suburbs from East to West in Melbourne span roughly 140km from one side to the other.
Melbourne is Australia's most populous city, with 5.4 million, it overtook Sydney Sept 2023. Due to expansion of Western suburbs out to Melton. Melbourne is way more better in places to see and do, Sydney is great, but traffic is chaotic, and Sydney has the Harbour and Bridge, and Opera House most know, otherwise it's expensive and world reknown for its main sites. The battle is always on between the cities, one thing we all can agree on is Melbourne has the worst state government in history, and Sydney the worst City Council in Australia. Melbourne has the best coffee, cafes and world cuisines in the CBD and best Asian foods.
You are easily pleased if you think Melbourne is cool....As an ashamed Victorian , I now consider Melbourne to be the trashiest dump in Australia. So sad to see how it is now.
