I became a newspaper reporter in Scotland in 1979 aged 18 and loved this show. I even copied the way Lou Grant wore his tie and rolled up his sleeves! I ended up working for an American newspaper and was so happy to find these videos all these years later.

My wife says I still imitate Lou Grant. I use his line whenever I ask for someone's name, and they ask why I need it - I say, " My Christmas card list." Just like he told the insolent, security guard, Tim Butterfield at the Trib bldg near the start of s01e01.😅😂😅😂

I am 57. The Mary Tyler Moore Show, the Waltons, Eight is Enough and Lou Grant are all to me shows that seemed to transcend television. Add Hour Magazine in the 1980s with the superb actor, the late Gary Collins and I really loved 1970s and 1980s television. I am a better person today thanks in part to the superb writing all those shows had and the many lessons they had shared.

The show had a lot of class. It seemed realistic, too. All the quirks of being journalists that we don't think about, behind the scenes stuff, made into a funny drama.

Winning Grinn I canceled my cable TV subscription a long time ago because I got tired of paying to watch total crap. To be sure, there were some good quality TV programs on cable like Mad Men, House of Cards and Treme but a handful of good programs still wasn't worth paying for all these channels I wasn't watching.

@@cynthialyman2636 It wasn't too bad in the beginning. I'm sure you remember how good MTV and the Disney Channel were like when they started. And when my kids were younger, they used to love Nickelodeon. But as time went on, they all got worse and worse. Sadly, I don't have access to some TV channels that still play these old series. TV Land (another disappointment) used to. We baby boomers don't count anymore.

@@georgfriedrichhandel4390 What I remember concerning my own life's timeline is how the decline was evident by the late 1990's, and following the turn of the century it sped up exponentially with the development of the Internet and the subsequent 'Information Age.' Prior to this cultural shift, people still tended to 'behave themselves' at least in public, and crass, obnoxious, and profane behavior seldom appeared on network TV. What strikes me specifically about the era of the 60's, 70's and 80's is how not only did TV characters behave in a certain way, but they spoke well too; you rarely even heard the occasional 'damn' and the f-bomb never materialized anywhere, even after 'the family prime time viewing hours.' I mean, it just didn't happen. If you watch the older police dramas, so popular then, even the criminals sound high flown compared to today, speaking in stylized language even when they're supposed to be 'hip' and 'streetwise.' Writers were still at the helm, talent was a prerequisite for a career as a Hollywood pensmith, and actors still had to memorize actual LINES. With the advent of 'reality TV' all of this was rapidly relegated to the rubbish heap. I for one miss much of the 'old school' programming and could no longer abide not only having to pay for the privilege of watching inferior shows in the place of quality, but adding to that the endless barrage of volume-boosted commercials every few minutes made pulling the plug on all of it a definite inevitability. Sad.

🔥🔥🔥 Lou Grant remains the most significant and important television show since it premiered in Fall 1977. The cast, writing, direction and editing were top-notch, but it is the pre-eminent vehicle for conversation of high ethics, true freedoms, exposé of radical conservatism and the struggle for truth in media. The show and its lead actor were so dangerous to ultra-affluent & ultraconservative power, namely Ronald Reagan, Richard Melon Scaife, and the radical conservative bastions of corporate Earth such as Kinberly-Clark, Cadbury and Vidal Sassoon, that even CBS founder Wm. S. Paley could not fend off the wolves of his fellow Aristocrats.
It is must-see tv and stands above as a testament to what we've lost since, as well as what we must restore.
    Thank you for sharing!!!

Good comedies, dramas, shows with smart scripts, good to great ensemble casts stand the test of time; sure in some ways Lou Grant is dated, however, the drama isn't and the supporting staff and classic use of wonderful character actors make this show a must watch for me. When I saw the beautiful actress who first appears at 36:25 with reporter Carla and catches the eye of all the men present, I thought that she looked very much like a youthful Rita Wilson. I did some background research and found that she is in fact Rita Wilson in what may have been her first appearance in a network television series. Here she has an uncredited role portraying a 16-year old, but was either 20 or 21 when this premier episode of Lou Grant was filmed.

The Trib building is still there. On the corner of Pershing Square. It's apartments and has a Starbucks in the first floor.

It's pretty much explained in the plot..🤷‍♂️
He was friends with Charlie from his newspaper days.. Obviously Charlie wanted to try something different from the last several failures, and thinks Lou has the skills for the job. Even Lou is surprised.
The only real stretch here, is that Lou jumps into the job so easily, without help from Donavan to understand the system. That could've been quite entertaining and funny, but would've been the whole episode. Obviously they decided that they wanted to jump into the kinds of issues the show was going to address, and the way they were going to do it.

As a side note. Al the National Editor quit and took an assumed name to operate a radio station in Cincinnati, and the editor to his left couldn't stomach the violence of the big city, so he left to open a string of Ferryman funeral parlors. :D

For all those people who believe that liberals "control" Hollywood, just ask Ed Asner how liberal Hollywood is and why this series was canceled even though it was a top-10 series in the Nielsen's.

Ed is one of my all time favorite libs , and this show is easily his best work.. I was too young to discover the series when it was on the air (only around 3-4 at the time) but have cherished discovering it in my early 40s. So many themes were explored that are even more relevant now than they were then.

Nice show-you can see the seeds of disaster in the 70s beginning to balloon(Mason Adams incoherent, illogical explanation as to why he is going under for the 3rd time beneath a mountain of debt).
