Sir buracho, galut story an Tingguian igorot is a hearsay, Healthy trade relations existed between Cordillera peoples and their lowlander countrymen long before the Spanish stepped onto Philippine soil. This began to change during the colonial period, when the Spanish called the people they couldn’t conquer “savage” and “uncivilized”. To save face from their failures and keep any more of their subjects from escaping to the Cordillera region of refuge, the Spanish did their best to teach lowlanders it was far better to be called indio than to be called (or be associated with the) Igorot. In fact, not only were orders made that lowlanders be punished with 100 lashes for trading with Igorots, lowlanders were also conscripted as soldiers to “pacify” the unconquered Igorot peoples. Such was the conflict in a country colonized using a divide and conquer strategy. Contrary to what we experience today, Filipino nationalism was still in its infancy in the 19th century. Not only did regionalistic hostilities plague the Katipunan and the later Philippine Republic, but, if American military records are to be believed, the Filipino masses didn’t all welcome the fleeing Filipino troops. They record not only friendly natives, but even cries of “Viva America!” by government officials who would claim that it was the neighboring province that was full of the “insurgents” the Americans were looking for. It’s unfortunate then that Januario Galut, the one native named by American records who helped guide Americans through Tirad Pass, would be marked traitor amongst traitors in this turbulent time. Despite little being known about this man except that he was identified as a Christian Igorot, he would become the subject of articles and videos as one of the “Top 10” Filipino traitors, or the Igorot Traitor. Worse, perhaps, is our educational materials noting this fact while providing little to no information on Cordilleran contributions to Philippine independence, if not continuing the Spanish tradition of painting Igorots as uncivilized and backwards. Whether history proves that Galut did indeed knowingly betray his countrymen, it’s important that our educational materials paint a richer view of the many different Filipino peoples, including our own. One way we can better do this in the Cordillera is through an autonomous setup that will allow us to create regional educational policies, programs, and projects for Cordillerans by Cordillerans. In doing so, we are further able to write the history of our own people ourselves and transmit to our fellow Filipinos. In short rizal is the fisrt member of his fmmily to use the surname rizal to avoid suspicion.
