Appreciate the referral to Suzie Wright. I am older, too - with no waist! - and appreciate all these style referrals because I don’t know what my style is any more!
I think you are very smart not making garment after garment when you really need so many items in your wardrobe. I must admit I love most of the clothes that Catherine, the Princess of Wales wears. Of course most those clothes don't fit into the lifestyle of a 66 year old retired lady, living the quiet life in a small town. But she does wear some things I could work with, wide leg pants, pretty tops, nice jackets. I did buy some quilted fabric, the kind used for puffer jackets, to make my dog a coat. Well, when I got home, I just thought, this is too nice for the dog. I bought 1 metre, and it was $25! I now have 25% off coupon for the store I bought it from. I found a popover jacket pattern in my stash that would be perfect for this fabric. I'm going to figure out exactly how much more fabric I need and use my coupon to get it. Maybe Archie the dog will get a coat made from the scraps. This summer i really want to make some tshirt dresses, and wrap skirts. I am influenced by all the sewing vloggers making The Bestie Bag from Blackbird Fabrics. I want to make 3, one for myself, and one for each daughter. This make week I made a little wallet, it holds my debit card and a bit of cash, and my Fabricland membership card. It's the perfect size to slip into my pocket instead of taking my purse.
Jennett, I also love Catherine's style. She always looks so put together and stylish but not unapproachable. I love her choice of footwear but I don't know if 3-4" heels are very practical for most of us! Your fabric sounds interesting! Which pattern are you planning to use? Quilted fabric is so nice for the in-between seasons.
Hi, Janine. Your new top is lovely. I plan to try out some new knit top patterns because I'd like to have some simple knit tops that are more interesting than just a standard t-shirt. I've also been thinking about nailing down my style for retirement in a different climate than what I've lived in all my life. It's trickier than I expected!
I'm older than you and my waist line is long gone. I find myself in need of toppers to feel put together. Love the stripes and under a topper, quite slimming. Nice video!
@JanineSews In the warmer months I like light weight jean type jackets, sleeved pushed up. I also like big shirts with pockets, unbuttoned over a tank or light weight cotton knit top. I just feel most comfortable with my mid-section skimmed over.
Have a look at Pattern emporiums "downtown jacket" I've got a huge bin of quilting cotton that I've been dragging around since the late 90's that I've tried to donate over the years but I just can't seem to part with it. I'm determined to do something other than quilts with it. The larger pieces are destined for matching pillow cases maybe. After all, might as well use it for something that will get it out of the bin and into the light of day. And who doesn't like interesting pillow cases. I realised too late that I didn't really enjoy the quilting part just the piecing and designing. And how many quilts does anyone REALLY need stacked up in the closet, at my house and all my kids houses. Pillow cases? That's a much better idea I spotted a woman at the airport the other day wearing striped slacks with an elastic waistband. Not wide leg, more stove pipe. With a matching vest. What got me stalking her around is that I've got fabric exactly like that. Searsucker thin stripe. That I've prob had in my stash for 10+yrs.
You are a sewing tourist, love that! Cats must be heartbroken, though. Next time have hubby coordinate work gigs in cities when the US Quilt & Sew Expos are in town 😊.
Oh the cat is with us! She is a good little traveller. After our trip in the fall, we decided that we would bring her on longer trips. Just checked the checking for the Expos and yes, I'll miss them. I used to really enjoy the one in Atlanta. Although I still have unmade projects that I bought in 2019 😁
Your top is very beautiful! I am doing and Make 9 using independent pattern companies and I will definitely have to check out itch to stitch. Have a great weekend!
Zelda, Itch to Stitch has some really lovely patterns and they're well drafted. Good luck with your Make 9! I'll be watching for your progress on your channel.
I loved seeing your inspiration looks. On my list for late winter/early spring: Corduroy jacket, wide leg pants, midi skirt and a shirt dress. I’m not at all sure I will get all of these made. We shall see. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Janine, love your passport / wallet bag. It’s gorgeous. I really do not pay much attention to what’s in the stores but I do like the one color athleasuire look. I’ve always wanted to make a couple of sets like that.
Thanks, Caroline! Please share if you find any suitable patterns for the athleisure look. I'm a bit jealous of your work wardrobe. You've made so many pretty dresses!
I hope you can find a source for fabric! The place where I bought this fabric does a lot of mail order business to Canada and the US but I agree, it's so much better to touch fabric before buying. Sometimes quilt stores will carry a bit of garment fabric - especially from companies that create quilting and garment fabric. I used to buy Art Gallery Knits from quilt stores. Maybe somewhere near you has some stock?
This was really interesting… I’ve been thinking about my spring wardrobe a little bit too and I’m all over the place 😂 I think I have to sit down and look for inspiration and figure out what I want to wear and make for the next season. You’re so lucky to have gotten away from the cold for a while!!
Great to see you Janine! Love your new tee shirt. Nice that you have the opportunity to take your sewing machine with you while being away. I have taken mine in our travel trailer so that I can sew on a rainy day. I have made a couple of things in cork as a gift for a friend. A Sewngar Mini tote purse and a NCW wallet by Emmaline Bags. The purse has worn well but the wallet which has more handling wore more quickly. I think some coating on the edges would have helped that. I still have cork in my stash which I would love to make another purse from. Enjoy your time away!
Hi Brenda! It's good to have something to pass the time when the weather isn't great. Thanks for sharing that your wallet wore a bit. I wonder what could be used for coating? Maybe I'll contact Emmaline for suggestions.
Peppermint mag has a good wide leg pant that could be modified to full length. Also you must have a blouse body that fits, that you could redraft the sleeves on? I really like the idea of being thrifty with patterns as well as smart with fabric.
I never think of Peppermint Mag. Thanks for the reminder! Honestly, I don't have a blouse/button down pattern that I love. Wish I did. Also wish I could be like you and be more thrifty with patterns!
I've made 2 pairs of the wide leg Lander Pants, one in lightweight denim and one in corduroy. I switched out the button fly to a zip. I like the silhouette on me more than I thought I would. I also made the Maison Fauve pompon vest to go along with. I am enjoying it over a mock turtleneck to add a layer of warmth during this cold snap.
Nancy, this sounds like such a nice outfit for cool days! You’re inspiring me to try the Lander Pants! I hadn't considered changing the fly closure. Did you like the Maison Fauve vest pattern? Just looked it up and is it free?
@JanineSews loved the vest paytern. It is free, completely lined, and excellent details. I left off the welt pocket detail and used metal jeans buttons since my fabric is a bit bulky. No regrets! I will be making another one I am sure.
@JanineSews I forgot to say, there is an expansion pack to switch the fly on the Landers but I found the directions incomprehensible 😆. I am dyslexic so it's hard for me to judge if it was the pattern or just me. Karina @Liftingpinsandneedles has a fabulous tutorial that I followed in the end.
Love your t-shirt and passport cover. It’s January 18th and I just got home from the hospital. My gallbladder surgery did not go as planned. The surgeon started out doing it laprascopic but couldn’t proceed as I have too much scar tissue and adhesions in my body. So I got the old fashioned surgery. I have 10 inch long incision site under my right breast. Tuesday, Wednesday, and part of Thursday I wondered if I would make it. Part of Thursday and Friday I started feeling better. Touch and go if I was going home because they couldn’t get my oxygen levels above 89. I made it home today on the 18th. No sewing for awhile as I’m very tender and pain with moving about. Also just tired. I know it’s not going to be long before I’m back to sewing. I just want to make skirts for church, some pants & tops, and maybe some summer dresses that I can wear casual then dress up for church.
Oh Victoria, I'm so sorry that they had to do the open surgery. That was definitely not what you had planned for! Hope you are sitting back and taking it easy. Let people do things for you. I personally took great joy in directing someone on the correct way to vacuum. Take care xx
@@JanineSews Today January 24 I am really feeling very good. I’m still a bit weak but I’ve been in the house since I came home from hospital because of snow & ice. Once I can get out and walk longer distances I’ll be good.
I've had my eye on that PE top. At the moment, I have 'button down' stuck in my head. If I can't find a button down that I like, that PE one may do the trick.
Thank you for your video. I just bought some new fabrics from the Dressew sale here in Vancouver. Just like you, I don't need a lot of clothes in my retired life so I will choose carefully. I love my new fabrics though.
Oh, I bet those fabrics are gorgeous! I'm watching what they post on Instagram and there is a lot of temptation. Hope they find a new home - Vancouver will miss them if they close permanently. Happy sewing!
Another helpful video! Thank you! We were crossing a street in Tokyo a year or so ago and my husband remarked on a woman wearing a beautifully tailored black linen dress that caught his eye. I have to say, it caught my eye too and I can still see it and I have been saying to myself that want to make something similar all this time later! So that is my street style inspiration at the moment. Getting ready for the spring season with an elegant black linen dress! Yes, we dress more in Tokyo than in my home beach town here, so I have two wardrobes, city and beach, which is fun. Have a great adventure this week! ❤❤❤ Suzanne
Some great ideas Janine. For a knit pant take a look at Pattern Emporium’s Urban pant. Comes in a wide, flare and tapered leg with different lengths too. Also the Downtown jacket. I’m planning a travel wardrobe for an upcoming trip, which includes a PE Songbird, Downtown Jacket, LN Chorus Dress and top and a few others.
Agre the urban pants are great, my fav are the sewing revival classic pant, for your athleisure that's not athliesure have a look swimsuit patterns in Aussie . Gidday from down under 😅😊
Sorry sent the last remake accidentally. Cork is awesome. Sews great wears well and always looks rich. Most of my bags made are cork. Where did you find such coloured cork?..
Elsie, I bought this cork at a store in Canada - Rick Rack Textiles. The cork is manufactured by Katia. I did a quick search and there aren't many stores that sell it, although it does look like you can get it on eBay.
Janine, I absolutely adore that top you are wearing! Even before you mentioned it I said to myself that that is the top I am looking for! Is the fathered or shirting on the shoulder easy to do?
Appreciate the referral to Suzie Wright. I am older, too - with no waist! - and appreciate all these style referrals because I don’t know what my style is any more!
Nor do I! I suppose we're all trying to decide if we want to fit stereotypes or be ourselves 🤷♀️

I know exactly what you mean, it’s a huge learning curve! Four or five decades of wearing what society has told us to wear.
I'm older than you and my waist line is long gone. I find myself in need of toppers to feel put together. Love the stripes and under a topper, quite slimming. Nice video!
Karen, do you have a favourite topper style?
