  • How do you get a Train over 100 feet down from a Viaduct? The Scarborough to Whitby Railway Episode 5
In this 5th and final part of my walk along the Scarborough to Whitby Railway, i take a look at how they got trains from over 100 feet up above on Larpool Viaduct down to the Esk Valley Railway Line into Whitby Town.
I pick up where i left off at Prospect Hill Junction before taking the descent down towards Larpool Viaduct, this time going below this magbificent structure followng the Esk Valley to my side.
Once beyond we look for the railway junction that once linked onto the current active railway line between Middlesbrough and Whitby Town Station.
To finish we head towards and into Whitby Station.

Ant, you really are getting so good at producing absolutely fantastic series! They contain a wealth of information, with archive footage & photo's, stunning vistas, really poignant soundtracks, & excellent narration from your good self. So much so, you inspired me to spend 2 nights camping & kayaking the coast there, by the waterfall on the beach, where I'll be going again soon, once the weather breaks. As a result I have decided to become a patreon to you, for the pleasure you have brought me.
    Thanks & warm regards.....Urban Geeze.

Thank you so much for this celebration of the English landscape. Looking back at those wonderfully evocative photos of the line as it was, it's almost painful to see what we've lost through time. Thankfully Larpool Viaduct remains, to inspire.

Watching this has made me feel very nostalgic. As a young lad in 1968 we had a family holiday in Scarborough. I knew that the line had closed three years' earlier so did lots of exploring. As the track had only just been lifted the route and much infrastructure were still intact. I remember well walking from the junction up to Prospect Hill and West Cliff station. It's strange to see it now.
Thanks for an excellent video. I particularly like the way you've included stills from the past and evocative background music. . . .

Brilliant footage - both old and new! I had wondered how trains managed to descend from the end of Larpool Viaduct to the town station. That Scarborough - Whitby ex-railway route is very scenic although it's a rather bumpy cycle ride. I'm looking forward to the Whitby - Loftus video!

Ant, can I just say, this is one of the finest video series you have done, being a massive fan of Whitbys railways, this is also a personal thing for me and my family, as I took my them on the cinder track when we stayed in Whitby when my boys were younger....i too followed that trackbed from Prosect Junc down to Whitby wirh my then young Sons.....thanks for the memories mate...❤

So glad you enjoyed them Jon. It's the first time I've really planned and laid out a series like this so to see it all pan out as well as my enjoyment for being out there in the first place it's given me the incentive to get out and do another. I've already started the journey beyond Whitby I'll start putting them out early autumn. But what next, Bakewell to Buxton or the Woodhead?

This is an excellent series... I watched it as i was planing cycling the Trail but this (and the other videos/films) taught me so much more. When i cycled the Trail in August (Whitby to Scarborough) I looked at the path to my right and wondered were it when and why it was there this answered all my questions. Thanks.

Absolutely fantastic video Ant 👍🏼😊. Some amazing old photos as well. Made all the more special because we’ve stayed in Ruswarp on holiday several times over the years and walked the route into Whitby under Larpool Viaduct (along the side of the remaining line) many many times. Looking at your video, I think we may have possibly walked the Prospect Hill route one time as well without realising. I’ll have taken photos for sure and must dig them out. We’re definitely due another visit. It’s been far too long 😊

  • @mikeuk4130
    @mikeuk4130 11 місяців тому +1

Fantastic end to the series, thanks. I always take the Pickering - Whitby NYMR train when visiting the area and this really brings the final and less-scenic part of the journey to life. The railway around Whitby itself was quite something! Incidentally, I think the NYMR trains actually leave Network Rail track before they enter Whitby itself, the platform they use and the run-round loop being NYMR’s private track for its exclusive use. On the return trip, they rejoin NR by phoning the Signaller to request the token to Grosmont on the Esk Valley Line (unsure whether or not this uses an RETB token), this being handed back again by phone before leaving NR again just East of Grosmont and turning off to return to NYMR metals in the station sidings. Only certain NYMR locos are certified to use the Main Line, so locos will drop off their stock in the platform at Grosmont before shuttling back to Whitby with the next train. NYMR passengers can therefore either do the whole trip by through train, or have to change trains at Grosmont.

This is outstanding and really held my attention. If they restored a part of this railway it would be the equal of any heritage line in the country. I only hope that if it becomes a possibility, that Ant and North Yorkshire Wanderer can be part of the lobbying team. I'm intending to run the length of the route with my daughter in September as part of our marathon prep. Very well done Ant.

As Scarborough was a popular holiday resort I'd imagine that quite a few people might have used the original direct line from Middlesbrough via Loftus to Scarborough but after it was truncated at Whitby use probably dropped off with people using the direct buses provided by United which obviously went via Whitby but you don't have to change just like the X93 now.By rail now it's a big detour via York.

Greetings I don’t know your name but I am fascinated about this section of Railway archaeology on your channel if I like to say this to you you’ve done a superb job with the information and all that I’m still trying to get my brain around how that Railway worked but it’s most interesting I look forward to your next UA-cam on the
That you are going to do but once again I just want to say thank you very much you’ve got a beautiful UA-cam channel with the Railway archaeology and you know what you’re talking about so absolutely fantastic yours Jeff Melbourne Australia

Absolutely brilliant video Ant. Got some awesome retro footage. Westcliff closed in 61 after that they just changed ends at Prospect Hill but i believe they could still run round using the passing loop. The picture of the DMU at Westcliff is rare as its after the Loftus line had closed and the signals had been removed. It looks like there maybe a set of buffer stops beyond the platform.
Looking at the old pictures of prospect hill box it seems the low recess was where the point rodding came down from the lever frame.
Amazing you seem to make videos about places i go or work Yorkshire,Norfolk and east midlands
