2 weeks into full time van life and your channel has been fabulous for information as my little wifi box isnt cutting it. Now I just need to decide which one! 😂😊
I spend a lot of weekends camping with my hobby in remote farmers fields, sometimes with as many as 1500 other people which soaks up the available signal, I’m always looking for a better solution for internet. Another great review thank you,
Thanks for another informative video. We currently have a Puck2 antenna which works great especially in places I didn’t expect it too….in the highlands of Scotland this summer.
I really enjoy your videos. They’re matter of fact, easy to understand and very informative. I’m currently staying on a fantastic campsite in Ars de Re on the Ile de Re in Nouvelle Aquitaine, France. I’ve brought my 4G router and old Poynting antenna with me and was planning to buy a French SIM card, as my UK unlimited SIM has a data cap, which wouldn’t be enough for our 24 night stay. However, on arrival and for the first time in France and the UK for that matter, I have free WiFi which is giving me more than enough bandwidth for all my needs. I love France.
We had a Satellite Dome on our previous Motorhome and have a campervan on order - I wasn’t sure which way to go - (Very Expensive) Satellite system or Wi-Fi - I’m now pretty happy I’ll go with Wi-Fi - Thanks for very informative videos 👍
Interesting, but how does it compare to the Poynting Mimo 3 in your last video? My interest is for an inland waterways boats, which means it would be easier to reach and nick, compared to on top of a motorhome, so unfortunately a consideration when choosing this design.
yeah a good point, but to be fair the combined cost of the RUT241 and the Quspot is around the same as the Poynting Mimo3 - so you have approx the same amount of moneys worth on the roof.
Differences in performance not withstanding the Omnidirectional antenna is, in my opinion the best way to go as it is a total fit and forget solution. Having said that, I can see it would not be so suitable if you have a high top camper that is based on a high top van as you have the reverse problem to the signal reduction of using the RT421 inside a vehicle with its supplied aerial array. Neat solution though. Well explained and presented video as usual.
I have a directional antenna which I have fixed on a pole and and replaced my TV antenna with it. This means I can rotate and lift and lower my 4g antenna from inside my MH like you would your TV Ariel
I live in a rural area and sometimes I have good signal 20mb + then other days I have 2mb. I have a Huawei router with an external antenna and have been looking for a better antenna for a while so this video has helped me narrow down my choices.
Just bought my first campervan today, your videos are going to come in super useful especially as I am not what you would call "tech savy" Thanks a bunch!
Looks like a better option than our current system (HUAWEI router, no antenna) but how big is it when not in use? We have limited space in a VW Transporter
You should be able to find the dimensions on the Solwise website I suspect, if not they will definately be on the QuWireless one. THeya rent small, but I wouldn't say they were massive either.
Thinking I could knock up some sort of extending pole to fit the antennea to and mount on the rear ladder, sometimes we really struggled to get a signal in the rural france this year
The performance of either of these QuWireless antennas, coupled with the Teltonika router is impressive. Thank you to ExploreVan UK and Solwise for providing this giveaway.
Very thorough review , certainly worth considering one of the units to save wandering about outside holding the mobile at arms lenght trying to answer messages , 😊
I currently use a Poynting omni directional antenna, which I bought from Solwise about 18 months, with a huywai 311,sometimes I get a better signal on 3G, we all know the hype about 4G, but its always worth trying 3G aswell, great channel 👍
Keep up the great videos so full of information I have just purchased a Huawei b535-232 now playing with the band lock and going away in the van the weekend so will test on a site. Next up antennas between your videos and Solwise lots to look at
I ended up buying the qumax as i go to a lot of shows and festivals that have wifi but are overloaded so i liked the idea of being able to select a less used signal would give me a better choice. Thanks for the info
Hi Have seen the KuWifi that is an all in one and also Falcon do a similar with a single unit, what would you suggest go smart TV and usually ipads, iphones and kindles in our caravan,
Both are now quite old tech being only Cat 4 routers and the Falcon in my opnion is massively overpriced. Personally I would suggest spending a bit more than the KuWifI and going for something like the Huawei B535-232 with an external antenna.
Oh, I brought the D-Link AX1500 that I'm sure you recommended on one of your previous videos. Looking for an antenna for this, but I guess if I did win, I could test them both out!
Another great informative video. Thanks for all your effort. I purchased the Sercomm 4G+ CAT18 router for £30 from ebay after watching your review and it works brilliantly 👍
I bought a teltonika rut 241 on your recommendation. Iv got less signal now. I had a huawei b535 so side by side testing them with a poynting xpol1 ,iwas getting 35mb up load 22 down load using the huawei, with the rut 241 it dropped 12 mb down load barely 5 up load .contacted solwise. But it did not improve the out come .would like to try one of these antennas to see if it would improve to problem.
Hi this very much comes down to what we say quite regularly, there is no one solution that is "the best" and it very much depends on circumstances as to what the best solution is for you individually. We highly rate the Huawei B535, we have a couple of videos on it and have recommended it. It is a good Cat7 home router and will perform well particularly where it can aggregate multiple signals. It doesn't have the configuration levels and robustness of a Teltonika router but it's a good performing router. The compariable Teltonika router to it would not be the RUT241 it would be something like the Cat6 RUT360 The RUT241 is only has a Cat4 modem, so in reasonable signal areas the Huawei is likely to out perform it. But where it is better that huawei is in its robustness and its level of configurability. For off the beaten track use where there is limited signal then the RUT241 would be my choice over the Huawei, so whilst one of these housings is likely to improve the RUT241 performance it you could still find the Huawei performs better due to its higher performing modem.
Interesting that the directional antenna got reception frim more distant transmitters, how much trial and error is unvolved in getting the best signal?
You can get a good idea from using a site like cell mapper to know the direction of the towers, but it is still a bit of trial and error to focus it in and see how the tower is performing.
hmm, i am watching vids as i would like to really choose setup, which would work in rural/forrest areas Scotland etc., without trying much and really know, what would be good choice for application, but so far not clarrity yet... yet here i got surprised that pointing anthenna can make such difference vs omni + having router inside is also the option
Hi, it depends how far away from the power source it is - If the distance is longer than the cable you could extend the cable or put a power scoket nearer to the unit. As most of our viewers are fitting to a motorhome or campervan they tend to use a 12v wired cable rather than the included mains power unit so it can be made to the length required. As the Teltonika can also be powered over Ethernet (POE) then this is a 3rd option.
Hi, difficult to say as the QuSpot will vary in weight depending on which Router / Option you go for and Kuma don't appear to give any max weight for the pole. Interesting option though - if you try it out do let us know how you find it.
I've just picked up a qumax with an rut955 after watching this. Bitni cannot get any dignalm in fact. I get better signal in the same.spot.ising my phone. I sound like a novice but how do I find the best way to face the antenna? Is there a way of finding where the towers are? Thanks
Congratulations to Matt Holland who was randomly selected to win our giveaway! - You can see the draw here - ua-cam.com/video/tYdPqfznovs/v-deo.html If you weren't lucky enough to win - remember you can still get 10% off any purchase from www.solwise.co.uk including the QuWireless products by using the offer code EXPLOREVAN at the checkout.
Hi - as the router is still so close to the van and the enclosure includes a high gain WiFi antenna we found no noticeable difference to the WiFi signal inside the van vs the on unit antenna with the router inside the van.
Another informative video, currently using a puck which is better than the routers internal aerial but only just, I like the look of the QuMax would just need to figure out a way to rotate it while it's on the roof
Great informative video as always. Just wondering if either of these antenna could be used in conjunction with a Netgear Nighthawk M1 as I already have one of these in use?
Hi thanks - glad you found it useful. The units are design specifically for the routers they are compatible with, whilst it may be possible to fit the M1 into either of these units physically, there would be a few potential of issues to consider. 1) the M1 has TS9 LTE antenna connectors so you would have to use adapters to connect the SMA connectors. This may introduce loss and in our experience TS9 are at risk of vibrating loose - so you may find you have to open up the unit to reconnect them. 2) the M1 doesn't have external WiFi antenna connections like the teltonika units - therefore you would be reliant on the built in WiFi antenna rathet than being able to use the high gain antenna in the enclosure - so the M1 wifi signal may or may not be degraded getting inside the van, unless you used the Ethernet connection. 3) I've not used the administration pages on a M1 - so whilst the Teltonika routers are designed to be mounted remotely without physical access to the unit and all functions being accessible via the web interface, if you need to do anything on the M1 physically you would have to open the enclosure up to do it. (eg do you need to switch it on with a button or does it come on Automatically when you plug it in?)
Impressive. I honestly thought putting the router outside the van would have been a bad day, as the van insulation etc would block some of the Wi-Fi signals they produce. Seems I was wrong
We are currently using the tp link mr6400 which seems to be working ok. Been watching afew of your videos on the roof aerials so might sound a daft question but how do you find the best way to point a directional aerial.
It is a bit trial and error - luckily the RUT241 shows the signal power so once you have connected to the tower you can watch that change as you rotate the antenna to make sure you are focused on it. The Cell Mapper website is good to give a head start on the direction of the tower for the network you are looking for
Tricky choice if not in one location for an amount of time. How difficult is it to find the right direction to point the Max? Would not really want to be running speed tests every time I parked up.
It is very much trial and error, but the router shows a signal strength so you could just use that to help fucus in on the tower. But that wouldn;t allow you to "find" other towers it could connect to.
Not participating in the giveaway (not in the UK) but interesting idea. Are they only suitable for teltonika routers? What about the cooling of the device (it can get very hot on the roof during the summer, it can also get very cold in winter), the waterproofing and the condensation?
Great questions, the way the router mounts connects it to quite. Big metal heat sync so I can’t see it being a problem. Since trying it out I’ve seen them in use in various industrial commercial locations so guessing hey don’t have issues with them. Once installed the units are sealed and waterproof so shouldn’t be any issue with damp / condensation. I’ve only seen them for Teltonika routers, probably as they seem to be the go to for industrial / commercial applications.
I haven't tried so many solutions and the fastest I've ever got was 10mb download. You said about the cable length, maybe that's my issue. Wonder if I can cut them down a bit.
its a difficult one as unless you are very good at making the new connection to the plug you could end up adding more loss than you remove by shortening it.
Just bought a swift select with a satellite system and tried it out on a trip to Scotland without any joy. Actively looking for an internet solution, you may have just found it for me thankyou
I have been trying to achieve better signal strength in my boat for a long time now. 1Mb download from all ISP's at the moment lol I would love to find something that would actually work.

Great review as usual, nice to see an alternative solution that allows minimal cable signal strength loss. I have a Puck-2, would be interested in a comparison of speeds against that 🙂
Really impressed with the Qumax results but I think it would be a bit of a pain if you have to get up on the roof to align it, especially if you move every day or 2. I wonder when someone will bring out a self seeking antenna like my Oyster satelite dish! I currently only have a EE mifi as we've been in our motorhome full time for just 6 weeks and I'm still trying to work out what we want vs how much we can justify spending
Hi, unfortunately it can be very much trial and error and using the signal strength to focus in on the tower. But I use the Cell Mapper Website to identify towers in the area to give me head start.

Just bought a camper, your channel has given me so much information before actually buying a set up. Thanks 👍
Thanks for another informative video. We currently have a Puck2 antenna which works great especially in places I didn’t expect it too….in the highlands of Scotland this summer.
I'm still in the planning stage of my van conversion, so have not looked into 4G Internet yet. Thanks for a great video, very informative
I bought the 240 off the back of one of your vids, it’s great fair play
I really enjoy your videos. They’re matter of fact, easy to understand and very informative.

Interesting, but how does it compare to the Poynting Mimo 3 in your last video? My interest is for an inland waterways boats, which means it would be easier to reach and nick, compared to on top of a motorhome, so unfortunately a consideration when choosing this design.

An "in van wifi" is on my to-do list this winter, thanks for the reviews as always!
As always your videos are extremely informative. Thank you.
But how am I going to power it if it's way up there?? I'm pretty sure the included power cable isn't long enough.
Hi, it depends how far away from the power source it is - If the distance is longer than the cable you could extend the cable or put a power scoket nearer to the unit.

Best router reviews for mobile van reception. Thanks for your advice.
I'm interested in the QuSpot antenna and thinking of mounting it on a Kuma magnetic pole. Would this work or would it be too top heavy.
Hi, difficult to say as the QuSpot will vary in weight depending on which Router / Option you go for and Kuma don't appear to give any max weight for the pole.
Interesting option though - if you try it out do let us know how you find it.
looks good. do you need to put a hole in the roof or can you just feed the cable through a window??
It’s only the power cable that needs to go to it which can be quite thin so a window should be fine.
I've just picked up a qumax with an rut955 after watching this. Bitni cannot get any dignalm in fact. I get better signal in the same.spot.ising my phone. I sound like a novice but how do I find the best way to face the antenna? Is there a way of finding where the towers are? Thanks
Hi, we use cellmapper.net to see where the local towers are.
Nice idea putting the router in the ariel, I wonder if the signal from router to the device is compromised getting through the metal van walls.
Because of the proximity of the router to the van there is very negligible impact on the signal.
How does the wifi signal get into the van if the router is on the roof in the Qu-Spot?
The QuSpot has a built in WiFi antenna which gives it plenty of boost to make sure the WiFi gets in to the van without problem.
Thanks for the quick reply, on order tomorrow @@ExploreVanUK

Many thanks for a very interesting vid...your hard work is much appreciated
Question.......so, the router is now outside the van......how does that impact wifi connection to the router from inside?
Hi - as the router is still so close to the van and the enclosure includes a high gain WiFi antenna we found no noticeable difference to the WiFi signal inside the van vs the on unit antenna with the router inside the van.
@@ExploreVanUKBrilliant, thanks. Sounds like a great set up. Pity my rut360 doesn't fit. Banking on winning!
Very impressed this could be just what we are looking for . One of these would be great for our motorhome.
Thanks for a very detailed eplanation@@ExploreVanUK
Look good, better than the tiny antenna I use currently.
I'll be going very remote, so I was surprised by the directional version. Might have to get myself an extendable pole and go the directional route?
Impressive. I honestly thought putting the router outside the van would have been a bad day, as the van insulation etc would block some of the Wi-Fi signals they produce. Seems I was wrong
We are currently using the tp link mr6400 which seems to be working ok.

Another great review, I get really patchy service when out and about. I'd love to win this. Thank you for running a giveaway 😊
Good vlog and interesting solution to signal loss
I found this video great for potential routers and antennas for my new van. Keep up the good work. John
Really enjoyed this review, prepping for our XLWB Daily build with same layout. Thats for sharing! :)
Tricky choice if not in one location for an amount of time. How difficult is it to find the right direction to point the Max? Would not really want to be running speed tests every time I parked up.
It is very much trial and error, but the router shows a signal strength so you could just use that to help fucus in on the tower. But that wouldn;t allow you to "find" other towers it could connect to.
need something like this but it totally confuses me
Not participating in the giveaway (not in the UK) but interesting idea.
Looks like a winning combo I'm using the Rut955.*****
Thank you very much for posting the video & all the information … I’m just researching mifi info for our van so this is very useful:)
This a really good comparison. I currently have a puck which does have limitations, but this looks like a better solution
Thanks for reviewing 😃
Great review/video as always. Cheers
Just bought a swift select with a satellite system and tried it out on a trip to Scotland without any joy. Actively looking for an internet solution, you may have just found it for me thankyou
Love the review. Defo looking in to getting one for my off grid living
I have been trying to achieve better signal strength in my boat for a long time now. 1Mb download from all ISP's at the moment lol I would love to find something that would actually work.
Hi
Currently do not have this type of setup only using a simple MiFi unit. However I am now finding this limited and have been looking for ideas and advice as to what to purchase. This video together with others from yourself have given me some great advice and ideas just need to determine which is best for our use.
Dave
How do identify which direction to point it?
One options is trial and error. The other is use cellmapper.net
Could be a superb setup for my little camper. Great vids as always and thumbs up to Solwise.
Great video 👍🏼 way to much choice available these days to research ourselves
Great informative video. These things can be confusing but you explain it really well.
Great video. I'll be revisiting this as I am looking for a solution for my camper van build.
Great review as usual, nice to see an alternative solution that allows minimal cable signal strength loss. I have a Puck-2, would be interested in a comparison of speeds against that 🙂
How is this powered? I cannot see any POE ?
You can use POE but I just used a 12 volt power cable as I already had one made up.
One of these would be a nice addition for my camper conversion, thanks again for the useful information.🙂
This was interesting anything that could help us get a signal when down in Cornwall camping 👍😉
Really impressed with the Qumax results but I think it would be a bit of a pain if you have to get up on the roof to align it, especially if you move every day or 2. Both systems look fantastic I’d love to win 👍
Sunday 24th 🎉🎉🎉🎉 Xmas has come early 😂😂😂
Good solution with router inside antenna.
Really useful video, thanks.
Another great video. can you give some more info on how you selected which tower to use? I've got the RUT241
Hi, unfortunately it can be very much trial and error and using the signal strength to focus in on the tower.
But I use the Cell Mapper Website to identify towers in the area to give me head start.
Very interesting options...
Looking to add 4g to my van. This could provide it perfectly 👍
