One of my ancestors was an Alabama boy who died in that charge down to the creek. It was so interesting to see what it looked like, as I have never been there.
Such an excellent and well maintained battlefield park Gaines Mill is. All the Richmond area battle sites are a great visit and unfortunately often overlooked. Remaining earthworks, trenches, and rifle pits still visible at Cold Harbor and some of the forts along the James...a really good couple of days worth of history indulgence. 👍
