Man Joe was my childhood riding idol. the most style. Got to meet him in a bar in Austin in like '03 and he mentioned I should come by 'the ramp'. Over the next few years I got to ride the T1 ramp and see Joe and Taj and a bunch of insane riders at that place. Such good times.
One of the best riding memories was being 13 years old riding the old shimerville skate park and having Joe , luc-e , sandy , Keith ,and Taj show up . I also got to spend a day at the old posh with Joe and Taj. I’ve been to the Butt hut a few times , then road that shady box jump at Keith’s house near the hill climb. All you guys were really cool to us
Excellent point about content being less accessible, and therefore more coveted. My old VHS copy of Forward got watched hundreds of times. Thanks for these Fragments pieces! I'm at a weird point in life where I feel too old for BMX, but man I just can't let it go. Pieces like this bring the stoke back a little bit. I should go pedal around today.
A true legend, a lifelong idol, and a never ending icon of the sport. 30 years of my life(and im 35) has been forever shaped by BMX, and the OG's are the ones who make me feel young
It was such a special time. My own story mirrored Joes in many ways. A broken collar bone ment months off the bike and it presented an opportunity to get into photography. It was such an awesome time. 35mm film photography. The videos were always just on in the background when we were home after a days riding or diggin trails. Get home, turn the t.v on , press play on the videos , have a beer and a chat and a smoke or whatever. Such a time man. It was everything ❤️
My lady would ask me to go to Barns and Nobles with her for her books and I bolted to the magazine section looking for the new Dig mag! Better times! Great memories, and photos Joe.
My buddy Johnny and I got to the Forward premiere late and missed the showing!! We figured they'd run it at least twice but that was not to be.. I told Dave we missed it and he kindly, and maybe a bit drunkenly, gave me the only extra copy he had! So we ended up having our own early premiere at at our shop and all of us riders were very stoked! What an incredible team and film! Plus Ruben's part was even more sweet because I love Built to Spill.
This guy doesn't age. It is hard to get across what Forward meant to us when it came out. It wasn't just the riding, which was powerful and original. It was the way it made you feel a part of something that mattered. BMX videos hadn't done that before.
Sick edit.. Feel honoured to have been part of the Dig family even if it did involve putting my mates in the classified ads, rigging competitions and raising hell at the backyard Jams :)
I remember that Joe once singled out that Sandy Carson footplant photo as a favourite of his. I tried to track down a print from the photographer a few years ago but I failed miserably.
Man it was so fun being a fan of Joe Rich as a teen. Loved his style as a youth… I lost my “ I love Joe Rich” Standard Byke Company shirt on my 21st birthday….. 🤷♂️
Joe Rich is one the best OG’s still doin it like Taj, Byrnes, Terra, & so on. Where’s Kris Bennett at ?!?!? East Coast Underrated Trail King ! NWC ! Long live the woods. !!! 🌲🤘🏻🦾🖤
Etnies, Vans and DC were always companies looking to turn a profit. But they also invested in BMX and skateboarding because they believed they had a cultural value. Adidas, Nike and New Balance are different. They are not interested in 'alternative' aesthetics and ideas. They just put out products that will make them as money as possible.
There's a strong argument that forward is the greatest BMX vid of all time
Genre defining.
How can you argue this
Criminal Mischief, Forward & Demolition
best video of all time Forward
best genre defining video Seek and Destroy
best series Road Fools
Easily.
I’d watch another hour of this.
I still watch FORWARD about three to five times a week. Still riding at 41

Man!?!? No way! All those boys and the punk rocker himself,’ sandy Carson’
As we all know… NOBODY IS AS PUNK ROCK AS SANDY CARSON
One of the most humble people on and off the bike! Been one of my favorite people to watch on a bike from road fools, Ramp Ranch demos, to T1 ramp.
Great photos from one of BMX’s greatest
those tapes seem similar as x-ray 🩻 scans
Joe is the nicest dude ever! Picked up my Barcode last year, cheers to T1!
I wore out my copies of forward, criminal mischief, road fools 2, and all time low. Rewatched forward a week ago as well. It was the best time in bmx.

Always wanted more of Joe. He was my favorite rider growing up and You Get What You Get was and still is my favorite video

Absolute legend. Both the the man, video and the magazine! Opened my eyes at a very young age.

Love this! Great work everyone!
Man I remember that photo of Amos Burke at 6:25. Must've been around when Livid came out. My favorite era of BMX.
Thank you so much for another amazing episode!
Legend. Good memories riding WWW with him
