The Nine Road

- The Nine Road is the busman's name for one of London's oldest and most used bus routes, running between Mortlake and Liverpool Street. The film takes us along the route on a summer's day, and shows the operation and control of the Number Nines from early morning until past midnight.
Narrated by Douglas Cameron
I worked on the 11 bus route the no9 rival for the most popular route in London.
Mortlake’s buses were the best kept buses in London transport fleet , they weren’t clean
they absolutely gleamed , a credit to one of the smallest garages in the fleet .
Fabulous music intro, specially composed too.
Happy memories from 1967 when I drove the No 9 Bus out of Dalston Garage
cheers to memories of bygone days
The year I was born.... Safe Journey my friend!
Superb. That was my era. Wonderful old London.
Love this video, I'll be driving RM875 tomorrow morning and watching this always gets me champing at the bit to get behind the wheel of these wonderful icons, I've driven fifty five Routemasters in almost twenty nine years including an ex-Northern General RMF.
My mum was on the 9s in the early sixties, her favourite job.
Love these old films.. Many thanks for sharing.
In the last shots we see the lady conductor walking home to Hammersmith, to close the film. Nice touch, but no cigar. When all other buses had stopped running, staff would go home on a staff bus, dropping off all over the place as required. I did a few when I worked at Stockwell in the 80s, it paid an hour or two in overtime.I then went home to Tooting on the N87 night bus. I enjoyed working on the RMs...Routemasters, on 7 different routes. When forced to go OPO, one person operated, I stood it for a few months, and left back in 86. The job was finished.
No staff bus at Potter Bar when I worked there back in the late 80s / early 90s! (I started in '86 just as you finished!)
0:46 nice view of Hammersmith bridge before the paint peeled off. Double decker buses are now too heavy to cross
Nothing crosses it. It's closed to ALL vehicles (except bicycles), and has been since 2019. Even motorbikes aren't permitted to cross it.
There's been a row going on between Richmond Upon Thames Council, Hammersmith and Fulham Council, and TfL. Seems none of them can agree on a preferred solution....so the bridge stays closed. People have got used to the hassle of not using it, and now use either Chiswick Bridge or Putney Bridge. But it's pretty bad that nothing has really been done about it.
There even talk that it may become permanently closed to ALL vehicles other than bicycles.
So just as the once iconic route has been reduced to a 'stub'; Hammersmith Bridge has also become a shadow of what it once was, for so long.
It's all very sad, and has been turned into a big political mess which no side is claiming responsibility for.
worked on the 9's as a conductor from Dalston and Ash Grove
Great Video thanks .. my Dad was a bus driver at New Cross and drove the RM/RMLs
So much of this is still familiar to those of us in the industry. Now where is my lost mileage form?
Lovely film!
Absolutely brilliant video. Never heard of the Bessie system. I was a driver in the 1960s, and I don’t they were about then. Just loved watching it all the way through.
Fantastic documentary
I did have a copy of this from London Transport headquarters with the music cassette on some sort of 70’s briefcase showfilm. I took the case apart as I was young but I lost the film and music 😢
Do you know the name of the symphony that starts playing at the 11:37 mark ?
@@sebastianvisconti2423 I don’t know.
Immaculately turned out, reliable vehicles owned by the people of London and crewed by proud Union members.
Owned by London Transport, not the people of London.

Wow, this brings back memories of my childhood, going on the No.9 up to Kensington and elsewhere. Cant believe people sat on a bus all the way from Mortlake to Aldwych!! Did they really??
I think the last time a No.9 Routemaster went over Hammersmith Bridge was around 1986 or 87. After that they started using single decker buses. Plus the old Mortlake Bus Garage closed at that time too, and was demolished not long after.... replaced by houses - which are still there, funnily enough!
The route has changed over the years - with it being shortened extensively. No more no 9, but 209. And with Hammersmith Bridge closed to vehicles for nearly six years! (since 2019), the route terminates just before the bridge; while before this it finished at Hammersmith Bus Station.
Sad, that such an iconic route is now little more than a short ride. Heyho. But the memories live on.
Excellent. Wow. Thanks.
Great song
The number 9 was THE route up into town for me, and I would have gone up there at least 3 or 4 times a month back in the 70s and 80s. Getting on at Mortlake Garage and nabbing the upstairs back seat first was always fun! Such a shame when they curtailed the route due to Hammersmith Bridge.
At 2:15 is an add for the July 1975 Royal Tournament.
That was delightful. Thanks for this! :o)
I drove the 9 when I was at S in 96to99 the bud mr tearney gets on after the concert is I think RM2023 I drove her we got 2extra standard RMs to boost the peak vehicle requirement on the 94/9 road the rest at S were RMLs glad I had a chance to drive them 😊
What year was this made? Going by the cars and the people and the fact the white roundels started being applied in 1974 and there were plenty of buses with the gold lettering, I'd say late 1974 or very early 75.
Wow the RMs were uniformly well kept back then!
The advert briefly seen for 'A little Night Music' at 1.40 would also suggest around 1975
A time when the London buses looked perfectly turned out, and perfectly matching each other in uniform, like soldiers in a regiment. Compare that to the 1990s London bus fleet, with private operators running a mixed rag bag of bus types in their own livery, and often two or three different versions of that.
From an era when it was far more civilised.
London has fallen unfortunately
@@stevedickson5853 to where exactly? Looks like its in the same place to me...

A 9 crossing Hammersmith Bridge! When will that next happen? Sometime in the 2060s, perhaps? In the meantime you can see a single single-deck 209 cover a tiny part of the old route south of the river. There’s progress for you.
My Dad Robin Goddard is driving the bus at 52 seconds in, best bus route in London!
