ROUND VALLEY RESERVOIR FISHING - Catching a Limit!!

  • My friend Mark and I fished the Round Valley Reservoir located in New Jersey. Round Valley is one the largest and deepest bodies of water in the state I fished this lake many times before and it can be pretty challenging especially when you are fishing from shore. However perseverance can pay off big here as you can have the chance at catching large trout out this body of water. I've never had an awesome day on this lake until this day. We lucked out in our location, bait, and presentation as we were rewarded with a healthy limit of rainbows.
    The techniques we used were live minnows fished on slip floats and we fished Powerbait on the bottom using 6 lb flourocarbon on medium spinning gear. Don't need to get too technical when fishing from shore.
    . The reservoir is home to a variety of game species and is the current home of the state record Lake Trout. The biggest attraction in the lake is the family of salmonids that call it home. The lake has Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Lake Trout and is also stocked with Golden trout. If you live withing an hour of this body of water it is well worth your time. Be proactive and don't be afraid to move around until you find active using similar techniques. Tight Lines!

    what's your favorite way of catching trout from shore?

  • @Nytemare1989
    @Nytemare1989 2 роки тому +1

    I hate to be that guy but for the education of others I feel as though I must comment. This lake and it’s conversation is close to my heart.
    1. Separate stringers, for each limit. It’s the law. You basically incriminated yourself with this video. Are the rangers gonna watch it 5 years later and book you? Probably not but follow the law.
    2. If there is a potential that a fish isn’t legal size please god don’t drag them over rocks in a net. Yea You kept the fish but if they weren’t legal size, you would have killed many of them.
    As fisherman, your a conservationist first. Start practicing better methods so that we all can enjoy this lake for many years …

    • @NEFishing
      @NEFishing  2 роки тому

      All very good points! You are right, thinking back we should've use separate stringers. I think me and my friend just got really excited as this the best day we've ever had there. As you know it can be tough at times and just hooking a couple of fish can be a very productive day, especially when every fish caught is a keeper.
      As far as conservation goes, you're right! Every fish should be taken care as safely as possible, especially if it's not a keeper or decision to not keep the fish is made.
      On that note it we'll stocked on a yearly basis so I think people will continue to enjoy the lake for years to come especially if the fish are handled as safely as possible.
      Thanks!

      No disrespect brother… awesome that you had a good day, it comes with experience. If every one of the anglers in nj saves just 1 or 2 fish a year, we will end up with a lot more fish in the waters

      And also, do you think I gotta shot at getting one this time of year? Or is it too cold.

    • @NEFishing
      @NEFishing  2 роки тому

      Yes you have plenty of time as long there isn't ice that prevents you from casting out. Honestly the same rigs I use the video work in the dead of winter as well. No need to do anything different. I caught one of my biggest trout from there in January and I know they're catching now. The only thing other thing I would recommend is to bring a setup to cast out lures to fan cast an area while you waiting for a bite on the bait. Also don't hesitate to move around, you can sit on an area all day if you want but if don't get a bite after about 40 mins I would pick everything up and move 50-100 yards and set up again.

    How is the bass fishing from shore?

    • @NEFishing
      @NEFishing  3 роки тому

      Not easy, don't really fish for bass from shore there. There are bass but it would be best to target from a boat. Pretty much shit fishes the shoreline fishes for the abundant trout there.

      You went there too early, around this time you might have some luck at night. Otherwise it would be best to wait until November when the water temp gets colder and the trout start to come near shore. I don't fish for trout there until November and will continue through April/May. As far as spots go they can be caught near shore all around but Rangers Cove is a good area to start at! Hope that helps!

      @@pavlorodchenko2064 rangers cove is the area located to the right where you enter towards the swimming area. Head towards the swimming area, but got to the right and you will find another parking lot with a boat ramp. You can fish that whole area and don't be afraid to move around. Give one spot about 40 minutes to an hour, if you dont get any hits move at least about 50 feet to the right or left and keep that until you find fish. I like to focus on deeper water but the trout will come very close to shore during the cold months!

    Any tips on shore fishing at round valley? I'm planning a trip there on memorial day though from seeing your replies to other comments that might be too late for shore fishing. Also did you buy those shiners and if then from where?

    • @Daniel-nr1dh
      @Daniel-nr1dh 3 роки тому

      oh also does it matter from where you fish from, like the far side, near parking lot, etc. because im planning to fish the side opposite the boat ramp (across the entire lake).

    • @NEFishing
      @NEFishing  3 роки тому

      You should still have a chance at catching from shore around memorial, you might have to concentrate on early morning hours or late afternoon/evening hours. Def bring at least one rod rigged with spoons or small jerkbaits, you never know when some active trout could be around and it's worth making a couple of casts. There should be at least 2 tackle shops in the area that are still open and carry live shiners, one is called The Sporting Life and is about 10 mins away from the lake.

      @@NEFishing thanks for the informative reply, and for my memorial day trip im gonna be camping there for 2 days (im basically going to be fishing the whole time). Would spinners be effective? My thinking is that they're too light and you can't really cast out that far.

    • @NEFishing
      @NEFishing  3 роки тому

      @@Daniel-nr1dh spinners would be effective but take some that are a little heavier and bigger than what you throw for stock trout at a pond. Take a couple of spoons as well, they can cast pretty far.

  • @danieltku
    @danieltku 6 років тому +1

    Nice catches from the shore. How far did you cast the line?

    • @NEFishing
      @NEFishing  6 років тому +1

      Daniel Ku I would cast out as far as I could throw the 1/2 once weight, I do that to get the bait into the deeper water where it will rest in 15-25 feet of water. During the winter months the trout will come very close to shore, so I would cast one vait with a soft cast and the other far out at about 50-60 yards awa, this way you will fish different depths and increase your chances of finding fish. You'll know when you're in deep water since it will take a,while for the bait to hit bottom. The first fish caught in the video hit a live minnow about 20 ft from shore. Hope that helps!

      Unfortunately I primarily focus on Round Valley from November into April where the trout will come closer to shoreline, they can still be caught throughout the summer but you need a boat for trolling or drifting in the evening hours. Haven't fished Spruce Run in a couple of years, there's good fishing going on now especially in the evening hours, been focusing more on saltwater fishing lately.
