  • Rai Weiss, co-recipient of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics, is a principal architect of the greatest recording device in human history, LIGO (the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory), which captured the first recorded sounds from space. These first recorded sounds were the ringing of spacetime from the collision of two black holes over a billion years ago.
This project is supported by Science Sandbox, a Simons Foundation initiative dedicated in engaging everyone with the process of science.

This was such a fantastic story. Rai deserves his awards and Janna was such a great interviewer. I've listened to a few of Janna's interviews and they are so entertaining.

Thanx PW for the people you bring to us and the place to share ideas. The following is a guess of the 7 dates of the BH coallision based on a Mayan Callender, it took 103 days from the first event to the second then you dont mention any other date due that they are not able to give still that information, my guess is that it takes another 103 days for the 3th, ones more 103 more days for the 4th, then another 103 for the 5th, then some other 103 for the 6th, then it took 154.5 days for the 7th, then 103 and for last is 154.5 so in total we have 927 days that it might take for the 7 events of the black holes and one more event for the neuteron stars. this is only my guess.

Why should black holes rotate around each other before they collide

They had angular momentum. But it was being gradually overcome by their mutual gravitational attraction.
For example, our galaxy moves through the universe on it's own, but also as part of a Local Group of other galaxies, also moving on their own. We all have our own angular momentum. In other words, direction and speed.
But, all these local galaxies, including ours, are very slightly moving toward each other. As their mutual attraction slowly overcomes their angular momentum, they will get closer and closer to each other until they "collide" and eventually become one single super galaxy. While the stars and planets in each galaxy have a very near zero chance of colliding, it's probable that the black holes at the core of these galaxies will eventually merge together. In case you didn't know, our galaxy core black hole is Sagittarius A*.
TL;DR is, things in space move in relation to other things in space based on their mass and angular momentum. If their mutual attraction overcomes their angular momentum, they collide.

Does any body knows the DATES whene each one of the 7 black holes coallision events and the neutron stars event as well. My thinking is that you should count the days from the first to the second, from the second to the 3th, from the 3th to the 4th, from the 4th to the 5th, from 5th to 6th, from 6th to 7th, and for last from th to 8th. Some paterns could appear if you pass it to hours or even minutes not to say seconds; like in days as the info that he gave at 1:10:47 that the 8 events took AROUND ANE YEAR AND A HALF which is 547.875 Earth days and is a curoious number that hapens to be in many forms like:
    547,875/299792.45=547.1913
