  • Company founder and CEO Andrew Middleton shares the innovative approach GoSolr is taking to make solar energy accessible to South African households. Drawing parallels with the early days of television in South Africa, where renting made colour TVs more accessible, GoSolr's rental model for solar systems offers an affordable alternative to traditional purchasing. The conversation explores various aspects of the solar industry, including the advantages of renting versus buying, technological advancements, and the response to growing demand amidst economic and seasonal factors in South Africa.

❤that citizens take matters in their own hands; so grateful that citizens spent their own funds to upgrade SA; now solar; yesterday the great news of a world class hospital; the tidy towns project that started in Margate; solidarity that build a 300 million university during the pandemic whils the ANC cadres sanitized vacant schools for millions; ANC eat taxpayers funds and destroyed all government assets and eskom could have been saved if only they went to the root of the problems corruption cartels syndicates unskilled workers etc.

I own a setup and 8 years later no major issues except for a battery management system which was replaced last year without charge by solarMD even though that particular component was out of warranty. The small battery back up for rental is far from adequate if you want truly uninterrupted power supply. Your geyser fires up and you’re done in quick time. As my property is also used as an Airbnb and with most guests including local guests not energy conscious the purchase option is best. If I were to rent the equivalent of what I have installed it would probably cost multiples of the R1799 pm. It also adds some value to the property when selling. Even in the Cape Town winters there are days when I don’t need to draw from the grid at all. I don’t dismiss the rental option , but some is also making a handsome profit and if I had no option to choose just get a battery and inverter for less than the price of one years of rental and it’s yours.

Go solar saved me. I have a single unit Airbnb at my house. I need power and it is affordable. Cheaper than my electricity bill.

Howzit : Altho I would prefer to take up on the option of Renting Solar-Panels ( Inverter + Lithium Battery already installed ); what of the : * Rent Now .... To ( Possibly ) Buy Outright Later; * being based on an established performance record ? ? 🤔

Why don't you include wind generators as well? As long as there is wind at night and on cloudy days surely that would compensate or assist when no sun or little sun is available?

It really is more of a convenience factor rather than a savings factor. You can never really justify the capital investment if your key objective is saving money... No matter whichever way you analyse it, the cost of solar vs the inconvenience of eskom outages still weighs heavily in favor of people just putting up with power outages. Only the smaller percentage of households can actually afford to buy or even rent a solar system. I have gone with a 12k setup without panels for now. It is really just for the convenience of keeping my lights, internet, laptop and tv powered. the 3kw 200ah uninterruptible power bank setup I have now is more than sufficient for my needs, and soon I will get a few panels to supplement my monthly power bill. Most people simply do not have 20-30k for a convenience factor though...

      >It really is more of a convenience factor rather than a savings factor.
It can be both. Electricity is probably going to go up in price in the short to medium term. If you add panels then you reduce your costs now and into the future.

One of the major issues around loadshedding is damage to appliances.....fridge or freezer for example. This small inverter really is a little scam....no wonder he's smiling ......your geyser, unless it's on a timer will still cost you a lot..... solar needs careful management if you are going to feel the benefit in your pocket. And yes, I do rent my solar, because the bank will NOT lend people money to cover that if they need a bond.

No local producers of batteries, inverters nor pv panels. It's definitely not cost effective even 8 years later. If you buy you will never recover costs, none of the products last long enough

Does it work - yes. Would I recommend - no.
They owner seems like a great guy just wish it would translate to service.
We have a child with special needs and we run a non-profit for kids with special needs.
    System was installed in July.
Our db board was damaged and messed up.
We got the 8kw system. But then we discovered we’re only getting 6.3kw.
When I queried I was told I need to purchase the extra panels to get close to 8kw. I’ve been asking for feedback since august and no one has helped me. Sending me from person to person and no one helping.
My son is on an oxygen machine so we need the power. But no one wants to listen. We got an extra battery which we discover that my was signature was forged. I sent this to the company…
Our stove and geyser was disconnected and was told we need to get gas geyser. Which we forked out nearly 40k.
There is more but I’ll leave it there.
So the product works but customer care is nowhere to be found. Maybe someone else had a better experience but we haven’t had.
