@@sungjin-woo820 LOL sadly this is how animation standards have changed. Japan wants to make things more kid friendly. Kids in the 80s and 90s grew up fine with violence and dark themes in their cartoons. But now some mentally ill kids who should or shouldn't be on meds shoots a school and they use it as an excuse to censor violence. The most ridiculous one was DBZ Kai where not only did they censor Mr Popo but they even censor halos in the afterlife. Kids are old enough to see a punch but not that people go to heaven or hell? DB isn't even that scary they have an afterlife that isn't scary and people constantly get resurrected by the Dragon Balls. Children aren't that weak we just make them by doing this. 90s DBZ had it all. The soundtracks, the piano for my man Vegeta, Gohan wasn’t a poon, and we had a little more serious Goku. Oh and I almost forget the dude saying “next time on DRAGON BALL Z”
This really bugs me. Whether you watch the Funi dub, or the more manga accurate Kai, Goku grows as a character and is not the same person at the end. Then come super, and he's just a different, much stupider person. It's jarring and frankly annoying. Same for Vegeta to a lesser extent IMO - reverted back to angry man wants to be better than Goku. That is one reason I like GT, Vegeta really mellows out and is more about defending his home than surpassing Goku.
That dude died recently bro.... the original narrator... But James earl jones(aka Darth vader) once said he envied the narrator of dragon ball z saying he had more range and depth than him... Respect and rip

@Just Some Gay. That's animation, he's talking about the art, the way they draw the characters which is completely superior to the bullshit we got in DB Super.
Yeah, of course later DBS animation is better simply because the tech has gotten better, but the art style just can’t compete with DBZ. It was so much more, I don’t know, “gritty.” It fit the more tense plots far better.
@HASSAN ZIMAAM It wasn’t carelessness. It’s not like they were trying to recreate the DBZ art style and failed. They just completely changed the goal to a more cartoonish style, which, in most fans’ opinions, was a mistake.
@@kanavjain2115 SUPER's art style loses a LOT of detail when it comes to character design and movement. While the effects and choreography for SUPER are better than DBZ's, it loses a lot of impact because they don't do as good of a job with which animations to cut or focus on.
I agree the new style makes them look like they stop training for a while while the 90’s looks like that haven’t skipped a day of training also the facial expressions look 10 times better in the 90’s style then they do in the new style
For Me Personally, 80s & 90s DBZ Art will always be my Primary Aesthetic To me this look is the UNDISPUTED GOAT. & TBH lookin thru all this amazing art makes me wish current DragonBall pulled what MegaloBox did, where they kept a 90s Aesthetic but w/ Modern work done to amplify
@@nabil706 also, 90 animation is more expensive and Toie is infamously cheap from what I've heard, they won't spent extra money making dragon ball darker and better looking.
@Ero Sennin no I really don’t think that’s the case. There’s a clear difference here, nostalgia or none. What you’re trying to say is that everyone’s hung up cuz the times are changing and so is quality with it, but it’s kinda the opposite. As we move further forward we take more shortcuts, and it shows.
@@xKazeNoKishi But this is based on the industries that take that practice, and it's mainly because they are only going for what makes sense from a business perspective, these artists had time constrictions, especially as the series started gaining traction with Resurrection F, the business wanted to capitalize on the momentum to make the most money, it's all a matter of "What does the business work towards?" Is it profit over quality? There's a sacrifice for something generally in any given entertainment. It's 2 out of 3 things that you get. Fast and cheap=not good, gain profits but noticeably lower quality. Fast and good= not cheap, less profits. Good and cheap= not fast, will take a lot of time and potential to bring in a lot of profit, but not guaranteed. Sometimes people don't hit any of those marks but this needs to be considered with the general idea of producing entertainment to understand why art is the way it is, and why the informed consumer is understanding of delays and time constraints, because it's no longer something artists can just enjoy to make, it's a business that is looking to make money the fastest way
@@fernandogarza6397 I get that. I understand the reason for it. But that doesn’t mean I have to like it. I still like the series as a whole too, but I’m simply saying that it becomes clear there’s a difference when a comparison like this is made. Of course it’s unfair to make because these artists had all the time and passion in the world to make these changes. They weren’t forced to crank out these artworks in a strict deadline with a crappy budget. I’m just talking pure quality.
My favorite part of 1990s anime is how it was a bunch of still frames fading in over stupid music, occasionally with signatures Photoshopped in that don't belong to the people who drew the key frames
@Bryce You're calling him a snowflake when clearly his opinion upsets you, a bit hypocritical don't you think? I think Z is fucking garbage compared to the original series, doesn't mean Z is bad, just means I don't like it. Here's the big idea that you're missing kid, *people can have different interests*. You may not like Super because it's censored, which is perfectly fine, but some people don't care about censorship. The real kicker is that Super is simply required by Japanese television to be censored, it airs on a Sunday morning timeslot, and since that's children's TV it is required to be censored otherwise it'll be taken off the air. You're acting like a petulant angry child who's mad that someone else likes something that they don't.
@@razkable have you seen the movie, and also most of the staff who worked on super were ones who worked on dbz, the reason it looks bad earlier in the series was due to ridiculous time constraints. They had 2 months of pre production before it started airing. Most anime have at the very least 6 months, and even then they only go on for 12-24 episodes. While dbs went on for 131.
Best things about dbz art style 1. It made the fights look better 2 you can see how damaged the characters looked 3. Everyone looks badass in a serious scenario 4. I like how they made the characters look buffer (everyone looks slim down in super) 5. Nostalgia hit heavy
That's because super was targeted to sell better to audiences that didn't watch Z, because of that they followed a more "modern anime" style where everyone is skinny and it visibly didn't work, the manga looks far better btw
But that brings negative points too: 1, 2, 3, 4. The animation is affected by excessive details in scars, wounds, blood, muscles, shadows and details, this in turn makes the fights not look so good as they are so slow and have little fluency 5. Not everyone who sees Dragon Ball saw Dragon Ball Z, so nostalgia would not be something very useful, necessary, since in several viewers it would cause absolutely nothing
I think most of the blame is actually on Toei for rushing it so much. They have some amazing artists on the team but they basically only do touch ups. There’s dozens of apprentice artists who do all the frames and the main artists just fix up the big ones. Obviously when you gotta crap out an entire season in a month you can’t catch everything, which is why the early stuff is sooo bad.
The animators on Super need to divide their “heart” into 24 frames per second (maybe maybe 12 FPS if they are animating on 2s), while on a deadline. So not really a fair comparison with artists who are redrawing a single frame from reference.

Too bad. Toriyama told long ago that he dont like all that gore and struggle. In DBS he aimed to return to original spirit of DB, funny but exciting adventure with friends.
@@beatbone96 Manga has diferent artists than mainstream video. Also in manga the artist has alot more creative freedom than in video and experimentation is also much more predominant since it is faster to draw a dozen pages than making 30 drawings per second of anime. You can see the same in other mangas where they seldomly follow the anime's style or story to a T.
@@blacknemesy I thing you didn't quite understand his point. he replayed to someone that said it was Toriyama that didn't want to series to be as gore filled but he at the same time was the guy that wrote and draw the original manga that at bare minimum starting with the Piccolo Daimao Arc would be very brutal and gory filled it self. But to be honst the real reason Super is so much cleaner is because it runs on a few earlier time slot than the first 3 series and therefor isn't allowed to be as violate as said earlier series.

The 90s has more detail than the modern. The modern is lazy budgeted anime. 90s took time. Detailed the face. Every scratch , scar, and blood. Even dried blood was very detailed from regular. And then let's not forget. Modern dbs doesnt even fucking have blood anymore. I remember the days when holes would be put through chests and they would cough up puddles of blood. Now its literally. Just a non detailed hole. I'm really disappointed in how they fucked up the animation for a show that was so good and 20 years later they got lazy with it when they brought it back.
@Parker Family Uh... No, it's just lazy. In fact, they got in massive, public trouble for how lazy they were, and publicly apologized for it. That being said? Dragon Ball Z was pretty lazy with its animation (but not necessarily its art style, which DBS is lazy at both); O.G. Dragon Ball beats out both of these, and surprisingly Dragon Ball GT owns them all in animation most of the time.
Different generation, back then muscles, blood and violent cartoons was all manly and normal to watch even for kids. This generation is too sensitive for that so they made all the characters look thin, weak and feminine. And there are more dialogues than there is action and if there is some action there is no blood or a really violent scene. Dbz from the 90s was by far the best anime/cartoon to watch. Nowadays you gotta say 'no homo' after you tell someone you watch dbs.
@@timothys6944 Idk if thats it maybe the drawers got lazy and less detail is a lot easier to keep making than more detail... Some characters are still ripped look at Jiren and Toppo for example
90s looks way more detailed and lively, both art and animatiion. The scaling and camera views are better proportioned, characters just pop more. If only they could just animate the old way from now on. Really nostalgic from the good old series
Well they dont have to go back to cel shading, but theres gotta be a happy medium between the two that would preserve what was loved about the 90s style while updating it. The new Broly movie did that, granted that was a much higher production value but cant something be done on the cheaper end of things without strain?
I half agree, for dragon ball super to improve they could add more shading, and detail but your opinion isn’t because well you want it to happen it’s ur nostalgia that wants this to happen, what if u only watched remastered dragon ball z
Remember that these are still images that these artists got to take as much time as they wanted to convey the picture in a 90’s style. Most of the 90’s still shots here might look more detailed because these artists were not on a deadline
@@ChenTheRainbow Iirc, during this time, they had an extremely strict release schedule for working on episodes, which resulted in this arc specifically being animated poorly compared to all the others. This is also why the ToP arc has more consistent animation, as they had longer production schedules.
It have nothing to do with art style either. It's just that DBS have poorly drawn art instead of polished drawings but both pictures are in DragonBall style. Really, it is more a problem of stopping halfway throught the drawings to save time instead of delivering a top-quality product, not with style itself
@@renookami4651 Its both. Even if we get these polished drawings you talk about, they dont look good cause the Artstyle of Super is WAAAY inferior too Zs. Like the only very good looking frames in Super are the ones of the people, who dont follow 100% the Artstyle of Yamamuro
I think it’s because they didn’t give super enough time to really polish it and make it as good as z, because they Brody movie is when they start hitting their stride, I mean it’s not as good as z, but I’ll take it over super
Imagine: 90’s art style combined with the smoothness of DBS Broly. That style fused with those smooth, hard-hitting, badass fights would just be amazing. Even more perfect than Cell.
@@theysaidimasian9766 no I think what he meant was that the art style made the animation look much more fluid. The reason the art style of the movie was like that was because it was easier to animate
Some of the episodes actually look like this, especially in the later parts of the show. Anything done my Yuya Takahashi or Naotoshi Shida is very reminiscent of Z. What's funny is that the guy responsible for a lot of the new less intense character designs is the same guy that did some of the best, most intense shots in Z.
That’s what I was honestly expecting when I clicked on it Wasn’t disappointed to say the least though since this like what I had growing up with DB AF rumors and all we had was pics/concept art to go off via from back in the days.
@@aidanr6196 You can make an AI that can compare thousands of images of specific art styles and make corrections / modifications. Honestly. I would rather still stick with the Super art style but modify it to fix areas where the animations are off model. The reason I say that is that it's not right to fix something that's not inherently broken. Z in DB's artstyle wouldn't be Z anymore. GT in Z or DB's style wouldn't be... well... GT anymore. Where Super is well done, it looks great, and is distinct from the other shows. And that's fine. (Heck it's silly to even say "The Z style" because it's had 5 or 6 major artistic iterations in its lifetime)

@M Billa Realistically having blue hair makes sense considering neither parent had purple hair (Unless you want to count the maybe 5 minutes that Vegeta was a redhead as why his hair is violet) so the blue hair wasn't a problem, if your pointing to that.
@M Billa I mean, He isn't scrawny as much as he is taller, and the choice to have blue hair is because everyone knows hes her son now, meaning blue was probably his natural hair color the whole time.
@M Billa I'm not making the argument that Blue haired trunks was a good idea I'm just saying if you think about it purple hair didn't make sense either.
@M Billa How buff the characters are isn't why I think the Z style is better.

1. It made the fights look better

3. Everyone looks badass in a serious scenario
4. I like how they made the characters look buffer (everyone looks slim down in super)
5. Nostalgia hit heavy
I love how some characters love look more menacing in z compared to what they is now in super
Yes
That's because super was targeted to sell better to audiences that didn't watch Z, because of that they followed a more "modern anime" style where everyone is skinny and it visibly didn't work, the manga looks far better btw
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
But that brings negative points too:
1, 2, 3, 4. The animation is affected by excessive details in scars, wounds, blood, muscles, shadows and details, this in turn makes the fights not look so good as they are so slow and have little fluency
5. Not everyone who sees Dragon Ball saw Dragon Ball Z, so nostalgia would not be something very useful, necessary, since in several viewers it would cause absolutely nothing
It seems people in the 80's used to put more heart in the Works.
Less computer shortcuts
I feel this
I think most of the blame is actually on Toei for rushing it so much.
Everything had to be done by hand pretty much.

@@theysaidimasian9766 no I think what he meant was that the art style made the animation look much more fluid. The reason the art style of the movie was like that was because it was easier to animate
DBS with DBZ Style: THIS ISN’T MY FINAL FORM!!
Agree but the art syle from uiversal survival arc and dbs broly are much better for me
But I really miss those bloods from dbz
I want to live in the universe where these are actual screenshots of the show.
😔
Lets ask Trunks for the time machine
Some of the episodes actually look like this, especially in the later parts of the show. Anything done my Yuya Takahashi or Naotoshi Shida is very reminiscent of Z. What's funny is that the guy responsible for a lot of the new less intense character designs is the same guy that did some of the best, most intense shots in Z.
rt bro :(
@@Thebadlamp no they dont. only a handful do and theyre like 5 second scenes
I would love if someone did a " deepfake" like stuff to turn back the artstyle using ai or something.
Your pfp thought
Not really how deep fake works
That’s what I was honestly expecting when I clicked on it
Wasn’t disappointed to say the least though since this like what I had growing up with DB AF rumors and all we had was pics/concept art to go off via from back in the days.
@@aidanr6196 yes it is, just not on that level yet
I really wished blood wasn’t censored, nor removed at all.
edit: Somehow although unlikely i got likes and even replies, i guess there is a first time to everythkng. thx for the Likes btw, really appreciate that people share the same opinion on this same topic.
Its because they want kids to be able to watch it now.
@@allen62 yaa killing is totally fine for kids as long as there is no blood.
@@flufychickens I mean, who actually dies in dragon ball super? Freeza is like the only person who dies, and it’s not portrayed in a graphic way at all.
The show originally aired on a channel in Japan that is like 13+; so they had to. The English dub added swears where they weren’t because it aired on Adult Swim in the US.
@@TheSteve5154 technically goku black and zamasu die, and even before that merged zamasu gets sliced in half. Crotch first
I really enjoy how Kale and especially Kalifla look in this style. Idk why, but they just look so much better
Because they look like actual woman and not 12 year olds.
@@M0M0117 But they are teenagers or in their late teens to early 20s at the most. They aren't full grown women. Even tho their age isn't released they pretty much act and look that young as well as speak that young.
Even tho I like big breasts I don't like how they increased the size for the 90's version of Caulifla, just seems like fanart at that point and not a genuine what if.
Fr, the style makes them look more serious and not kiddy-looking like dbs
