I was a Mormon missionary and I knocked on worse doors than that for sure. One guy was super fat and when he came out to the door he starting rolling his eyes into the back of his head, swaying on his feet, and moaning. He yelled out, "YO SOY EL DIABLO" (I'm the devil) and started to reach under his fat roll to his pants. We were like wtf??? He pulled out his hand and in it he has a loaded revolver and points it at us. I said, "Pues, veo que esta muy ocupado senor diablo. Volveremos mas despues cuando tenga mas tiempo para charlar. (Well, I see you're quite busy, Mr. Devil. We'll come back another time when you have more time to chat.) And with that we turned around and walked away. We saw a lot of craziness down there. I painted the house numbers on the curb for two Polygamist families in Salt Lake County. In 2003. One in Sugarhouse. One in Holliday. For $20 each. As an Atheist for $20. Just throwing that out there.
I was a true believer until a few years ago, but things like the book of Abraham issues and other issues like polyandry (admitted in the church produced gospel topics essays) and whatnot that really contradicted what I thought the church/prophets were about really undermined my faith in the church. More than anything though, when I looked into other religions experiences with the "Holy Ghost", it becomes clear that it is a completely unreliable method of finding the truth, so it appears impossible to rely on my spiritual experiences to determine whether Mormonism is true. My wife and I stopped being active a few years ago-it was actually really rough leaving the church as it was a pretty tight community... But now things are a lot better and it's so nice to actually have a day of rest on Sunday!
@@itWouldBeWise Polyandry isn't much of an issue, since the Church in the early days practiced "sealings" only that were just that - sealings, not actual physical earthly marriages. Joseph was only sealed to other men's wives when the husband would approve, and wasn't sealed to his wife. Usually these men weren't Latter-Day Saints and didn't believe in in the power of being sealed, so the wives would request Joseph to have them sealed to him. @@markbaker8849 A decent summary of what appears to be reality, but having previously believed in a "sky fairae" I can also tell you that would be a totally ineffective way of communicating anything of value to anyone except those who agree with you (although it may make you feel good about yourself as you see the "others" as apparently stupid - because why would you believe in a "sky fairae" after all)? My post was to share what I experienced and why I came to the conclusion that "there is no sky fairae", as you put it, even though at one point I did believe in one. I believe being dismissive of people's sincere beliefs misses an underlying reality that we're all basically hardwired to have very strong biases when it comes to our beliefs insomuch as they get wrapped up in our identity and/or tribe - whether religion, politics, bowling league, whatever... Being an individual with a post-graduate-level education and high IQ does not resolve that (if anything, it makes you better at rationalizing your irrational beliefs)
In college, I took several biology classes dealing with "general" and molecular evolution and my professor was a very intelligent and seemingly rational man. Not ever did he bring up religion or the existence of a god, and I was shocked when he revealed he was a devout Mormon... yet he fully accepted evolution and even once said that religion had no place in his classroom when confronted by a Muslim student about some lecture.
My older brother, 20 at the time, answered the door and it was some Jehovah witness lady. He told her that we practiced black magic and proceeded to invite her in. She left so fast her shoes were smoking. 😂 I still laugh about that after all these years.

Born and raised in Utah i can agree. More than most religions they actually help a lot of people. You ever out of gas somewhere while travelling, seek out the local mormon church, theyll literally fill your tank and send you on your way....still they are just another religious control group. I think most buy into religion are miserable and want a reward for their suffering here.
Agreed. I'm an atheist and I greatly ADMIRE the theoretical mormon lifestyle. It's a religion that teaches its followers to eat healthy, to be fiscally responsible, to love and cherish your family second only to god, etc. If I ever became a theist, I'd convert to mormonism. However, it's more likely I'll genuinely believe the Earth is flat before I believe in the existence of any deity. Still, mormons have my respect & admiration. They're the best of the christians.
When I first saw this clip, I flew out to Utah from California to meet my (at the time) girlfriend’s parents. Suffice to say, Richard Dawkin’s take on Mormonism made me glad I never ended up joining a cult to marry a girl I was enamored with. In the long run, I am way better off without her.

I met two people I went to school with today, a girl who I sat across every day at breakfast and a guy who was in the same music class for two years in a row and then I went to a Mormon church just because I was bored and they were the nicest friendliest people I’ve ever met, people I didn’t even know treated me better than the people I actually knew and that genuine niceness is kinda infectious.
I have been in the mormon church and left it, I have experienced with mormons that they are great at being nice to you and making you feel like it is genuine, but do something once (even something small) that they don't like or disagree with and their true colors come out, they are not forgiving or understanding but very judgemental. In my experience with quite a few mormons (not all) is that they are fake.
I was raised mormon. I really think its more about the sense of community. Which i believe alot of people are looking for that type of genuinely good willed community. I appreciate growing up mormon although i am not anymore. I dont think theyll allow me back with my demon hand tattoos now lol. But i think it swayed me from growing up to be a drug addict, criminal or downright scumbag. Gave me a decent set of morals.

People need community which is why they are drawn to religion. Chuck the religion and keep the community. I was born and raised Mormon. I had a very happy childhood, although I was very naive until my mid 20s. I don’t practice the religion that seriously anymore, but I’m still thankful for the great family centered values I learned from my super Mormon parents. Yes I’m Asian, Asian Mormons exist lol.
I tell my teenage daughter something similar - it’s more important to me that she believe in *something* than it is that she strictly remain a Methodist. I think it’s great to question your beliefs, and if that leads you down another path, so be it. Like you are thankful for your “family-centered values,” it’s that foundation that I want for her, along with the comfort that comes from believing in something beyond this life.

I used to be a Mormon between the ages of 9-16. I would say I never really thought about the authenticity of the texts or anything. It was just a really good community of people. We would visit other members, and other members would visit us. We would cook, sing songs etc. Every other Saturday we used to play ultimate frisbee. We had camping trips. The church always helped those in need. Of course, wherever there are people there are problems, and Mormon church was no different. However, overall the positives outweighed the negatives.

@@andrewg9107 there's literally a book of rules that everyone in the tribe can subscribe to. It's one thing that everyone can agree on. If a group of people find a basis of morals and folktales to create their own community, they are obviously more likely to succeed if said morals are actually just. This doesn't happen with non religious people because we're too stubborn to subscribe to one set of morals, so we create chaos while trying to create order . It's why every powerful nation on earth started doing so because they had a common mind towards religion and their place in the world. The more organized a group is, the more likely they'll be successful. I don't know why I typed this out to you...it's obvious if you've been alive for more than 16 years :p

That's the thing. Say all you want about religion as a concept, but as far as the people go, I've seen WAY more atheist assholes than religious assholes in my life time. This is of course anectdoctal, but at least in my experience, a lot of atheists are pessimistic and just not fun to be around. They like to shit on Christians for having a "holier than thou" attitude, when ironically, it's their pompous/smug/know-it-all behavior that comes off as "holier than thou". Again, this isnt ALWAYS the case (I was atheist for a long time and I dont think I was ever smug), but in my anecdotal experience, religious people (particularly Christians) are much more enjoyable people to be around than atheists.

I was in the Mormon church from the age of ten until about 13. I actually enjoyed the warmth and friendliness of the members. I have nothing but good memories from that time in my life-I just didn't believe Joseph Smith was a prophet. That's kind of a deal breaker. I may go back but I'll just keep the fact that I'm not a true believer to myself. And I'm not going to stop drinking coffee or beer.

I met this man years ago at a talk with Peter Bogosian and himself. He was so loving and caring. I had recently left the church and he told me he was proud of me. What a wonderful man.
Just got back from Utah. . beautiful, rich and booming state. I lived with mormon neighbors when I was a kid to get away from my family. They were the niceast most family oreanted people ever. Some of their beliefs were wild but everything else was about bettering the marriage and family.

To give a few examples, their creation beliefs make more sense than the problems with evolution or the "aliens seeded human life" ideas. Their belief that we're a spirit with a body, makes more sense than what the materialists have come up with. See Peterson debate on that topic. There was a book by an atheist philosopher, can't remember the name, who objectively evaluated, as much as possible, on a number of factors, which beliefs systems led to the most good for the most people. Societies which have adopted Judeo-Christian belief systems have fared way better than others or progressive or other political/economic ideologies.

I grew up with Mormon family members and in public identified as Mormon. My dad pulled me aside in private all the time and would say, “okay don’t believe that nonsense” when it got to the crazy stuff. He didn’t believe any of it and it’s mostly just a community that does super nice things for one another that believe weird shit. Odd for sure but now that I’m away from it, the non religious people I live with and near are worse people than the Mormons I’ve observed.

I was baptized Mormon when I was 11 and I remember having a meeting with the bishop and he was explaining tithing to me and told me that I had to pay 10% of my allowance to the church. My step brother and I were the only ones baptized in our family. My dad told me to think it through first and do what I felt was right and my brother swayed me.
@@manwhat2009 Christian churches don’t believe in tithing. They don’t tell their members to pay a set number at 10% or require it of all or any of them. They pass around a collection bowl and ask that members give what they can after a hell of a salesman speech by the he pastor.

Maybe they saved that talk for their more devout followers though because some I didn’t even see a collection bowl or anything and they didn’t ask for anything. I think most religions nowadays acknowledge the differences in the times and pertaining to tithing especially the differences between a theocracy and a democracy. There is a lot to this discussion but for me it comes down to I don’t believe in god so I don’t believe me giving money to people will store me heavenly treasure to me that sounds like the guy trying to sell me a miracle tonic made from cocaine. I’m not buying it either way, maybe it does have some superficial way of working for people who find ways to attribute material wealth to heavenly wealth a distinction made clear in the Bible that I think churches have also mixed up... Just a clarification, Joseph Smith didn't come up with Mormonism at age 14. He claimed to have received a vision at age 14, which allegedly started the whole process, but there's no documented account of this until 1832 (when he was 26). The church was officially founded in 1830, shortly after the Book of Mormon was published, which Joseph likely began working on 2 years earlier. So though it's possible that Joseph came up with some of the ideas of Mormonism as a teen, the actual work of writing, preaching, and gathering followers didn't start until well into his 20s.
And there are 4 accounts of how it started as well, with one where claimed that he was 15-16. The other accounts he claimed to be 14. You’d think Something as simple as your age would be easy to remember

As grown ups, it's a very good thing when we decide to investigate what our parents told us from childhood. Some people just aren't willing enough to search for the truth.
If you visit SLC you find every denomination. Every concievable church. Hare Krishnas, 6th & 1/2 Adventists. Greek Orthodox, Unitarian. Why? They all went there to prove Mormonism is not a real Christian Religion. Half the people who move there are there to prove that. That's why L.D.S. folks get weary of it. I've defended them in a letter to the editor when some Baptist wingnuts held up dead fetus posters in front of kids in Temple Square, and it was published. I think Evangelicals should stay in the Bible Belt. Especially after the debilitating loss Justice John Roberts delivered today ☺️.
Atheists think Mormons are idiots. Evangelicals think Mormons are evil heretics and deserve to burn in hell. So atheists will naturally more chill towards Mormons.
I do as well and for the record, many of those young brave missionaries get it wrong perhaps if they are what’s causing the bad taste in people’s mouths. I said the same thing to my slightly older friend who’s been listening to this podcast years longer than I have. He essentially compared Joe to an ape that learned sign language from those around him and built off from that on a platform that would just continue to grow due to charisma, personality, past success and wavering willingness to listen instead of always cutting people off like many egotistical hosts do although he’s not innocent from that either. Because I still listen to these podcasts say a lot about me myself, because if I were to just listen to many of his guests on their own I wouldn’t last 30 mins. I’ve looked into the retranslating of the Book of Abraham, and it is still in line with Joseph Smith’s translation. Joseph didn’t translate anything at age 14, but rather claimed angelic visitations at that age. The whole rock in the hat thing is totally accurate but has more implications than most media let’s on. @Fumontaindew2012 In all honesty religions to some extent were useful to mankind although it has been misused or created for evil dominance. Some religions have brought it upon themselves to decide morality which an important aspect that separates us from animals. Religion are nothing more than an idealogy. There are no civilization nor society that doesn't have economy, politics, and idealogy. I have always seen the hatred, distaste or blame on religion a little misplaced when religions are created by men.
It’s what pulls us , the belief that at the end of life’s journey a reward will be giving to those who believe in an entity and choose to be great. Weather it’s 72 virgins or all heavens angels signing hallelujahs at the end of the tunnel the incentive is there and it’s what drives some ppl.

We moved into a new neighborhood and when the Mormon neighbors realized we were not Mormon and had no plans on joining them at church, they stopped allowing their children to play with my children. So, I beg to differ on the opinion that they are the "nicest people".

I am a devout "mormon" and I have and will continue to befriend and remain friends with people who do not agree with my faith. I've known many Mormons all my life, and your characterization is hogwash and highly generalized. I think their beliefs are goofy, but they are, for the most part, kinder than the average person.
I am not a Mormon but I respect their sense of community. Unlike most other groups, Mormons started out as commies, everything owned by the community as a whole. They were forced to stop that by the US govt. in order to obtain statehood but the underlying principals still apply. As long as you are a Mormon in good standing you will never be poor or in need of anything as they look after their own. Mormon companies hire other Mormons first and will fire a non-Mormon to hire a Mormon which keeps the community strong and prosperous. Again, their religion is batshit, but their sense of community ensures Mormons are typically the most well-off members in any city.
Ymmv. Also highly depends on where you are. Some rural Mormon communities are very insular. But you might also have drastically different experience from neighborhood to neighborhood.
@El Lobo I think he's more trying to eliminate misinformation. most of what he does has to do with exposing indoctrination of children and educating people on evolution. he wants to spread science and understanding, and a lot of religions don't allow people to have that. maybe you don't think it's a worthy cause, but I think making sure people are well educated and know about the truth of basic science is important in the modern world. another thing the guy does is he studies religion and gives his opinion on it. plenty of people study aspects of culture. just because this particular aspect of culture happens be offensive to some people doesn't mean it shouldn't be studied. and a lot of the points he makes are good, important points for the future of our species, as well as for modern society.
On tribalism, I'm always amazed by people who, upon being confronted with a new idea or information, will immediately ask themselves "What do we believe?" What does my church believe? What does my family believe? What does my political party believe? The question should be, "What do I believe?" What do I think? How do I feel about it? What is my opinion? Truth is not determined by your tribe. It's established by reality.
You have to question that new information and why you hold the beliefs you do. If you never think about what you believe and why you may never get to the root of why you may believe wacky shit.

Just a small correction from one of those "nicest cult members". Joseph Smith wasn't 14 when he wrote/translated and published the Book of Mormon. At 14 is when he said that God and Jesus talked to him. However, he didn't gain possession of the Golden Plates he said the BOM came from until he was 21. The book wasn't finished and published until he was 24.

He knocked her up, and she was basically bullied into having an abortion by him and his parents, as, despite Mormons putting on a public face of being pro-life, they didn’t want her having his baby mar their family name and image. In my personal experience tribal thinking can also be a convenient shortcut for people who either can’t think critically all that well or believe they can’t think critically. If a leader or group of people I respect all think one thing, I can safely think it too. From what I’ve read tribalism seems to have been a tremendous evolutionary advantage for humans but now it’s not serving us anymore. We need to inculcate a new set of skills.
I agree completely. Tribalism served us well in ages past, because smaller groups had to think and act as a collective to sustain themselves and to survive, especially since there was little interaction between different groups (and whatever there was was more hostile than friendly). We realised that in our personal ignorance, our primary role in life is being an important part of our community which relies on us, but also on which we as individuals relied too. A two-way relationship in a sense. Nowadays, this concept disappears rapidly. We have large cities where everyone can be a nobody, access to education and more skills (which we mostly choose ourselves, they were not assigned to us by any group) than ever before in the history of our species. Not to mention our own, individual and creative freedom to pursue whatever goals we think would fulfill us personally. This makes tribalism essentially obsolete in the modern day. The focus has now shifted to personal endeavour and that is okay too. We don't have to worry nearly as much about having to somehow support a group of people anymore.

I was a true believer until a few years ago, but things like the book of Abraham issues and other issues like polyandry (admitted in the church produced gospel topics essays) and whatnot that really contradicted what I thought the church/prophets were about really undermined my faith in the church. More than anything though, when I looked into other religions experiences with the "Holy Ghost", it becomes clear that it is a completely unreliable method of finding the truth, so it appears impossible to rely on my spiritual experiences to determine whether Mormonism is true. My wife and I stopped being active a few years ago-it was actually really rough leaving the church as it was a pretty tight community... But now things are a lot better and it's so nice to actually have a day of rest on Sunday!

Joseph was only sealed to other men's wives when the husband would approve, and wasn't sealed to his wife. Usually these men weren't Latter-Day Saints and didn't believe in in the power of being sealed, so the wives would request Joseph to have them sealed to him.

I was in love with a Mormon girl for a while and was friends with her social circle. That community could not be more impressive in its cohesion, sincerity, benevolence, decency, patriotism, and faith. I just could not buy into its distinctive and unique religious beliefs.

Agreed. I'm an atheist and I greatly ADMIRE the theoretical mormon lifestyle. It's a religion that teaches its followers to eat healthy, to be fiscally responsible, to love and cherish your family second only to god, etc. If I ever became a theist, I'd convert to mormonism. However, it's more likely I'll genuinely believe the Earth is flat before I believe in the existence of any deity. Still, mormons have my respect & admiration. They're the best of the christians.

I met two people I went to school with today, a girl who I sat across every day at breakfast and a guy who was in the same music class for two years in a row and then I went to a Mormon church just because I was bored and they were the nicest friendliest people I’ve ever met, people I didn’t even know treated me better than the people I actually knew and that genuine niceness is kinda infectious.

I have been in the mormon church and left it, I have experienced with mormons that they are great at being nice to you and making you feel like it is genuine, but do something once (even something small) that they don't like or disagree with and their true colors come out, they are not forgiving or understanding but very judgemental. In my experience with quite a few mormons (not all) is that they are fake.
I was raised mormon. I really think its more about the sense of community. Which i believe alot of people are looking for that type of genuinely good willed community. I appreciate growing up mormon although i am not anymore. I dont think theyll allow me back with my demon hand tattoos now lol. I tell my teenage daughter something similar - it’s more important to me that she believe in *something* than it is that she strictly remain a Methodist. I think it’s great to question your beliefs, and if that leads you down another path, so be it. I used to be a Mormon between the ages of 9-16. I would say I never really thought about the authenticity of the texts or anything. It was just a really good community of people. We would visit other members, and other members would visit us. We would cook, sing songs etc. Every other Saturday we used to play ultimate frisbee. We had camping trips. The church always helped those in need. Of course, wherever there are people there are problems, and Mormon church was no different. However, overall the positives outweighed the negatives.

If a group of people find a basis of morals and folktales to create their own community, they are obviously more likely to succeed if said morals are actually just.
This doesn't happen with non religious people because we're too stubborn to subscribe to one set of morals, so we create chaos while trying to create order . It's why every powerful nation on earth started doing so because they had a common mind towards religion and their place in the world.
The more organized a group is, the more likely they'll be successful.

That's the thing. Say all you want about religion as a concept, but as far as the people go, I've seen WAY more atheist assholes than religious assholes in my life time. This is of course anectdoctal, but at least in my experience, a lot of atheists are pessimistic and just not fun to be around. They like to shit on Christians for having a "holier than thou" attitude, when ironically, it's their pompous/smug/know-it-all behavior that comes off as "holier than thou". Again, this isnt ALWAYS the case (I was atheist for a long time and I dont think I was ever smug), but in my anecdotal experience, religious people (particularly Christians) are much more enjoyable people to be around than atheists.

I was in the Mormon church from the age of ten until about 13. I actually enjoyed the warmth and friendliness of the members. I have nothing but good memories from that time in my life-I just didn't believe Joseph Smith was a prophet. That's kind of a deal breaker. I may go back but I'll just keep the fact that I'm not a true believer to myself. And I'm not going to stop drinking coffee or beer.

There was a book by an atheist philosopher, can't remember the name, who objectively evaluated, as much as possible, on a number of factors, which beliefs systems led to the most good for the most people. Societies which have adopted Judeo-Christian belief systems have fared way better than others or progressive or other political/economic ideologies.

I grew up with Mormon family members and in public identified as Mormon. My dad pulled me aside in private all the time and would say, “okay don’t believe that nonsense” when it got to the crazy stuff. He didn’t believe any of it and it’s mostly just a community that does super nice things for one another that believe weird shit. Odd for sure but now that I’m away from it, the non religious people I live with and near are worse people than the Mormons I’ve observed.

I was baptized Mormon when I was 11 and I remember having a meeting with the bishop and he was explaining tithing to me and told me that I had to pay 10% of my allowance to the church. My step brother and I were the only ones baptized in our family. My dad told me to think it through first and do what I felt was right and my brother swayed me.

Maybe they saved that talk for their more devout followers though because some I didn’t even see a collection bowl or anything and they didn’t ask for anything. I think most religions nowadays acknowledge the differences in the times and pertaining to tithing especially the differences between a theocracy and a democracy. There is a lot to this discussion but for me it comes down to I don’t believe in god so I don’t believe me giving money to people will store me heavenly treasure to me that sounds like the guy trying to sell me a miracle tonic made from cocaine. I’m not buying it either way, maybe it does have some superficial way of working for people who find ways to attribute material wealth to heavenly wealth a distinction made clear in the Bible that I think churches have also mixed up... Just a clarification, Joseph Smith didn't come up with Mormonism at age 14. He claimed to have received a vision at age 14, which allegedly started the whole process, but there's no documented account of this until 1832 (when he was 26). The church was officially founded in 1830, shortly after the Book of Mormon was published, which Joseph likely began working on 2 years earlier. So though it's possible that Joseph came up with some of the ideas of Mormonism as a teen, the actual work of writing, preaching, and gathering followers didn't start until well into his 20s.

Hey all! Member of the Church here! I just wanted to say that a lot of the topics and facts mentioned here are not quite right. I’ve looked into the retranslating of the Book of Abraham, and it is still in line with Joseph Smith’s translation. Joseph didn’t translate anything at age 14, but rather claimed angelic visitations at that age. The whole rock in the hat thing is totally accurate but has more implications than most media let’s on.

@Fumontaindew2012 In all honesty religions to some extent were useful to mankind although it has been misused or created for evil dominance. Some religions have brought it upon themselves to decide morality which an important aspect that separates us from animals. Religion are nothing more than an idealogy. There are no civilization nor society that doesn't have economy, politics, and idealogy. I have always seen the hatred, distaste or blame on religion a little misplaced when religions are created by men.
It’s what pulls us , the belief that at the end of life’s journey a reward will be giving to those who believe in an entity and choose to be great. Weather it’s 72 virgins or all heavens angels signing hallelujahs at the end of the tunnel the incentive is there and it’s what drives some ppl.
As if Dawkins doesn't know about the power of tradition, the fear of death, how we prefer invented answers rather than admitting that we don't know, tribalism, how big of an industry religion is many parts, how it gives some people lots of power etc.

We moved into a new neighborhood and when the Mormon neighbors realized we were not Mormon and had no plans on joining them at church, they stopped allowing their children to play with my children. So, I beg to differ on the opinion that they are the "nicest people".
They are nice to the extent that they hope to convert you. Once they understand that will not happen, the niceness goes away.
I'm sorry this happened to you. There are bad people and just because they go to my church doesn't mean that makes them good. I am a devout "mormon" and I have and will continue to befriend and remain friends with people who do not agree with my faith. The vast majority of my friends and my kids friends are not mormon and show no interest in ever joining.
I've known many Mormons all my life, and your characterization is hogwash and highly generalized. I think their beliefs are goofy, but they are, for the most part, kinder than the average person.
I am not a Mormon but I respect their sense of community. Unlike most other groups, Mormons started out as commies, everything owned by the community as a whole. They were forced to stop that by the US govt. in order to obtain statehood but the underlying principals still apply. As long as you are a Mormon in good standing you will never be poor or in need of anything as they look after their own. Mormon companies hire other Mormons first and will fire a non-Mormon to hire a Mormon which keeps the community strong and prosperous. Again, their religion is batshit, but their sense of community ensures Mormons are typically the most well-off members in any city.
Ymmv. Also highly depends on where you are. Some rural Mormon communities are very insular. But you might also have drastically different experience from neighborhood to neighborhood.

@El Lobo I think he's more trying to eliminate misinformation. most of what he does has to do with exposing indoctrination of children and educating people on evolution. he wants to spread science and understanding, and a lot of religions don't allow people to have that. maybe you don't think it's a worthy cause, but I think making sure people are well educated and know about the truth of basic science is important in the modern world. another thing the guy does is he studies religion and gives his opinion on it. plenty of people study aspects of culture. just because this particular aspect of culture happens be offensive to some people doesn't mean it shouldn't be studied. and a lot of the points he makes are good, important points for the future of our species, as well as for modern society.

On tribalism, I'm always amazed by people who, upon being confronted with a new idea or information, will immediately ask themselves "What do we believe?" What does my church believe? What does my family believe? What does my political party believe? The question should be, "What do I believe?" What do I think? How do I feel about it? What is my opinion? Truth is not determined by your tribe. It's established by reality.
Standing alone is hard. People crave their crutches. We are not a fundamentally rational species.
You have to question that new information and why you hold the beliefs you do.
If you never think about what you believe and why you may never get to the root of why you may believe wacky shit.
Whilst what you say is true, we are a historically tribal species. It's going to take many more generations for things to change. Society doesnt advance at the same speed as technology

The questions you suggested as superior that are centered around the individual necessitate the implication of the questions you reject which center around tribalism. When you refer to the individual, you imply the tribe. Hold your horses before you start looking down on others. It’s precisely this attitude of “being above it” that leads people to be fooled by our flaws. Recognize that you’re just as capable of being fooled by the human condition and maybe you won’t make the same mistake.
@@chrisf7730 as long as there is too much importance and emphasis put on the outcome of certain sports i.e football, then the problem of tribalism will be with us forever and don't forget that most clubs have a religious backdrop propping them up. In Scotland in the 70's and 80's when I was growing up if you listened to the idiotic songs being sung of a weekend you'd think that the Queen and the Pope were getting together for a right old punch-up. Just a small correction from one of those "nicest cult members". Joseph Smith wasn't 14 when he wrote/translated and published the Book of Mormon.
At 14 is when he said that God and Jesus talked to him. However, he didn't gain possession of the Golden Plates he said the BOM came from until he was 21. The book wasn't finished and published until he was 24.
It does read like a 14 year old wrote though.

@@jordanott5464 some of the verses have run-on sentences that a modern book would edit into a paragraph. There are also verses where they are talking about locations, such as the Waters of Mormon where they describe not only where the location is but also why its named as such. The way they go about doing so is really odd. It also does jump from third to first person quiet a bit and most books wouldn't only do one or the other.
Not saying that it is a rough draft or anything. But it was just something I noticed during my newest read.

I once had a roommate with a Mormon ex. He knocked her up, and she was basically bullied into having an abortion by him and his parents, as, despite Mormons putting on a public face of being pro-life, they didn’t want her having his baby mar their family name and image.
My roommate didn’t believe in abortion, but felt very painted into a corner, like she had no other options, and has been carrying this guilt with her ever since.

Joe Smith was not 14 when he came up with this. He was in his twenties, but he TOLD people that he had his first vision years earlier, which would have made him 14. This is a common misunderstanding.

In my personal experience tribal thinking can also be a convenient shortcut for people who either can’t think critically all that well or believe they can’t think critically. If a leader or group of people I respect all think one thing, I can safely think it too.
From what I’ve read tribalism seems to have been a tremendous evolutionary advantage for humans but now it’s not serving us anymore. We need to inculcate a new set of skills.
I agree completely. Tribalism served us well in ages past, because smaller groups had to think and act as a collective to sustain themselves and to survive, especially since there was little interaction between different groups (and whatever there was was more hostile than friendly). We realised that in our personal ignorance, our primary role in life is being an important part of our community which relies on us, but also on which we as individuals relied too. A two-way relationship in a sense.
Nowadays, this concept disappears rapidly. We have large cities where everyone can be a nobody, access to education and more skills (which we mostly choose ourselves, they were not assigned to us by any group) than ever before in the history of our species. Not to mention our own, individual and creative freedom to pursue whatever goals we think would fulfill us personally.
This makes tribalism essentially obsolete in the modern day. The focus has now shifted to personal endeavour and that is okay too. We don't have to worry nearly as much about having to somehow support a group of people anymore.
