I used to live in this neck of the woods. I have to wonder, how is it that, Gravenhurst and other places that regularly get lake affect snow, are so surprised at a huge dumping of snow from time to time? They are in part of the "snow belt" are they not? Thankfully, none of those interviewed were whining about climate change, even though they had legitimate concerns about power and other essentials. Like the one man said, he was grateful for his woodstove! Similarly, where I live in the northern Prairies, there are long term residents who are still surprised by -40°C that occurs every winter. I just shake my head in amazement...
Gravenhurst doesn't usually get all that at once. The trees usually provide some shelter. And the people who are surprised more than likely just moved up there.
I grew up in Bracebridge, and my parents who are in their 70s are still up there. They also live out of town. 25 yrs ago when there was a big Ontario Hydro culling, my Dad installed a generator. A few yrs after that he bought a snow blower. Currently they are doing just fine. In the 80s and 90s this kind of snowfall happened multiply times a month from Nov to Feb. This was normal. The only ones making a big deal about this is the news, and the people that weren't prepared.
@@StereoAnthony Well stated. The Mayor says she has not seen this in her lifetime. That is because she has yet to live a lifetime. I have experienced this multiple times, and it happens all over Ontario. Quit being complacent and recognize that you live in a seasonal environment. Perhaps take a look at some historical records to get a feel for what can happen weatherwise. Maybe even talk to some "generational" people. We seem to have survived this type of weather.
@@MaryAlexander-o2n I'm in Gravenhurst. At least 4 feet of snow and no power for 48 hours. A snow streamer was focused on us. At least it hasn't been particularly cold :D
@@MaryAlexander-o2n Our power is back, so it's likely that most of the town has been restored. Cottagers might still be blacked out, though. (We lost power for 6 days when a mini-tornado hit the cottage and took down hundreds of trees, but that was in summer --- much easier to cope.) The hardest hit were the folk trapped in their cars on the highway. It hit -16 last night, but the days have been around -3 to -5. Luckily we rarely get major dumpings when it's around -30.
How has Canada survived as a society when people still get surprised at a basic weather event that we face every year? And how are so many so unprepared?
@RWC-z1d It's 5 feet of snow. Really not a huge deal. The main thing is that people don't have food stocks or any source of power generation. The town and people were unprepared for some reason. This is a common occurrence. It's lake effect.
Why is everyone shoveling their own driveway? Where I live the neighbourhod hires a guy wilth a large snow throwing tractor to clear out everyone's lane. He just shows up and you don't even have to get out of bed
How about the rest of us... This storm did not only affect Gravenhurst. Bracebridge, Port Carling ,Bala, Baysville. and many more. Muskoka would be far more accurate
That’s the reason why I don’t buy EV car. ICE car is the way to go.

that first lady was matter of fact funny,,, slide off the roof as a child, cant do that anymore..
All I can hear is snowmobiles! Braaaaaap!

That is the amount we get all winter. Theses kinds of storms don’t usually happen until January and February.
Prob the most snow Gravenhurst will get all 24/25 winter season.
Fingers crossed. This was the biggest single snowfall I've seen.
@allo-other I'm in Southern Ontario and we just started to get snow.

@allo-other I saw all the snow you guys got on the news, I did not know you had no power, hope everything is good now, it is very cold where I am

Don't put your shovels away just yet
1:00 no doubt did a better job of clearing driveway than the car. ready to blind the driver behind them when they get back on the road
Lake effect snow is so bizarre and cool.😂
Snow is a four letter word…
How has Canada survived as a society when people still get surprised at a basic weather event that we face every year? And how are so many so unprepared?
You mean an entire winters worth of snow in three days? That’s what that amount was.
@RWC-z1d It's 5 feet of snow. Really not a huge deal. The main thing is that people don't have food stocks or any source of power generation.
The town and people were unprepared for some reason. This is a common occurrence. It's lake effect.
Why can't the weather god just dump all the snow in the ski resort and leave the towns and city alone
I’m sure Justin will be right there with his shovel to help
What does Trudeau have to do with a winter snow storm ? I think you are a bit obsessed
@ well if people can’t get roads plowed and can’t get out that seems like a problem
Good reporter!
These storms keeps crime down. I like it :) What are centimeters?
5cms equals 2 inches
You work in "Imperial"
You get paid in "Metric"

Some towns don't have that luxury
Most of the people in Gravenhurst are the people you would hire to do that.
Give a shovel to an underprivileged teenager to make some dollars shovelling driveways, maybe, imo
Must be that global warming I keep hearing about 😂
You're being sarcastic, but the lake effect snow was particularly brutal because the lakes are unusually warm.
No, the lakes don't usually freeze this soon...always an agenda.
Lol live in that hole.

"Unprecedented"?.... I'm pretty sure this area has precedence with big snow storms.
The use of the word unprecedented by the main stream media is unprecedented.
Yes we are accustomed to big storms however not this early and not an entire winters amount of snow in three days
Look, there's evidence for global warming all over the place 😂
Remember when they told us snow would be a thing of the past?
Nobody ever said that . Making things up to fit your political agenda. , says a lot about you
You can thank Jagmeet Trudeau's global cooling carbon tax for this cold and snowy "climate", not to be confused with weather.
All fake. Toronto got no snow.
Global warming lol
