I’ve been raising TAMUK Composites for three years. They are very easy to keep. Litters are large year round. Our temperatures get over 100 degrees through most of the summer. I’ve been very pleased with these rabbits.
What’s your set up like. Open hutches? What part of the country are you in? I live in the southern US and it gets brutally hot here. Heat is my biggest concern.
My rexes do well in -30f. We had about a month of -20f through -30f this year and none of them suffered any damage or died. I did try to have a hide box for them. They have lots of babies and are excellent mothers.
Glad I caught this early. Been working on my rabbitry most of the day. I owe your videos for so much of what I have learned. So clear and understandable. Thanks. I have the most kits I have had ever right now at about 27.
@@jamie5533 I do cages so I can monitor the birth rates. I did have 2 females and one male free range in my yard for about 6 months and most of their litters didn’t make it.
Tamuk’s are a good choice, designed with heat tolerance in mind. We mention them on our heat tolerant, Rabbit video ua-cam.com/video/Impl9ribyHM/v-deo.htmlsi=Kr5r7uC7j9wnhV0J
I concur. Not only the best and most comprehensive info, but your manner, Bobby, is very engaging and the pleasant personality makes watching your content so enjoyable-no nonsense ego
Bobby, love your channel. However, have one clarification for TAMUKs. You described the TAMUK Composite. There is also the TAMUK White - genetically a New Zealand, however A&M selectively bred their REW New Zealands to be heat tolerant as well. They are not show quality, but excellent commercial meat production. Both may be referred to as TAMUK rabbits, but there is a difference between the two different strains.
I would like to thank you Bobby, for your wisdom in raising rabbits, we are just looking for meat rabbit for ourselves, we live in a humid hot part of the country, our winter months upper 40 to mid 30, l have just started watching your channel thanks again
I would like to say my mini Rex and all Rex I’ve met do incredible on the cold, mine all survived a cold snap of -15 degrees without any issues. The only time I’ve had a problem with sore hawks was on one of my more poorly bred rabbits so if you get the right stock they’re no more prone to sore hawks then any other breed
I just want to say thanks for taking the time to share some much useful information with us. Thanks to you and a few others, I now have a successful small rabbitry that is providing my family with meat. I enjoy all your videos and will continue to watch any others you make!
Thank you for the video. Really, for all of the videos. Since you did hot weather bunnies, maybe do a companion video about cold weather bunnies. Or perhaps do a video about how to winterize an outdoor rabbitry, for those of us who live in places that get a lot of snow. (I live in Montana.) Again, thank you so much for all the work you do for the Rabbitry community.
Met a Rhinelander breeder at a show where we picked up our Champagne D'argent. She said it was so hard to throw the right color formation for show standards, she gave most of her kits to her local zoo 😳
I want to do a video to help for folks market their rabbits so they can sell them easier. When it comes to showing Those judges can be really tough after all it's the standard of perfection and you first and foremost need to avoid a disqualification. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this! I am also looking at mini rex. Do you know if they are as heat tolerant as the Rex? I've heard they are actually a different breed, just with the same fur. Not sure if the ears are the same.
Mini Rex’s don’t eat as much as the bigger 9 lb. rex rabbits they use smaller cages and are ideal for pet sales. They’re a small breed compared to the medium breed Rex but like you mentioned, they have the same fur gene. A Rex rabbit will do well in the heat as well as a mini Rex. Just be sure to keep your hutch in full-time shade. And fresh cold water every 12 hours if possible
Unfortunately, the program at the college is now shut down to the retirement of Dr. Lukefahr. Many reputable breeders are doing their best to keep the breed going.
I’m so thankful for your videos. They have helped me so much. Does anyone know what makes Dutch rabbits heat tolerant? Is it a shorter fur? They don’t have large ears
Dutch rabbits that have been raised in hot climates have produced litters that have inherited the same genetic characteristics as well as calibrated to that climate. Dutch rabbits, have a short fly back fur which allows them to stay comfortable. Now When folks move that rabbit out of its environment and drive it to a warmer climate for example, this is when folks run into trouble and start to experience heat stress.
The larger the ears the better the heat tolerate. The temuk's are genetically dialed in to have very long ears due to that's the only way a rabbit can expell heat from their body, they don't have sweat glands.
Any suggestions for southern British Columbia? We had a rabbit die because of the heat dome, despite taking them down into our basement to try and help them. We only ever get rabbits from shelters.
My cinnamons seem to be doing moderately well in the heat. This will be my first summer with them, and it gets to 120 here, so we'll need how it goes. My Rex seem to already be struggling.
Thanks for sharing your cinnamon rabbit experience. 90F or above is uncomfortable for rabbits if a buck goes long periods in the heat with no relief your bucks will surely lose their fertility. 120 sounds unbearable. If I were to run an outdoor rabbitry in that sort of hot climate I'd most definitely construct some sort of burrowing system in order to provide them some relief from the elements.
