Having John Jr Robinson with Toto after Jeff passed away would have been so great. He would've fit so perfect with his groove.. But as he said, NOBODY could take Jeff's place.
Simon Phillips was the right choice. He and Jeff didn't know each other well, but there was huge mutual respect. Pretty much any other drummer (certainly L.A based?) would have probably been not only grieving Jeff, but also massively nervous about filling those shoes. Simon is an outstanding drummer. Good on him for stepping in. Someone had to..
As great of a drummer as Robinson is, he never would have fit right. In fact, most all drummers cannot/do not mimic Jeff's feel/groove....many have tried, but it's not the same. Jeff was truly one of a kind.
I actually think JR could have done it. Both of those guys were/are masters of laying down a groove. But JR couldn't handle it emotionally, which I understand. They were TOO close as friends.
Good Lord wooden doubt he's really good on guitar and piano, he looks like the guy at the auto parts store behind the counter, that's what I love about it, you just wouldn't realize that it's one of the greatest musicians in the country
JR is great no doubt but technically Simon Philips smokes JR. No offence meant both are great players. I find Simon to be a humble guy for how great he is.
Heard a story that Jeff loved Phil Gould and advised the band that he would be a great replacement. Man that would have been something. Not a big JR fan.
@@iansnyder274 To be blunt the finesse of Jeff and Phil make JR look like a toilet. He was championed by Quincy Jones who used him a lot whereas Porcaro was hired by a multitude of producers. Its like comparing a racehorse with a donkey
@@regaltip8A Sometimes finesse is not required, just the pocket. I like 42 but which other band would fit Phil. Like Copeland would be too busy for a lot of studiostuff. Sting had to tie up one of his arms to get a good tracking for "every breath" 🤣
I always thought Lionel Richie's all night long and Steve Winwood's Highlife was played by Jeff but when i found out it was John he became my new favorite pop drummer!! Jeff is great but absolutly does not have that same kick as John.
No one can replace Jeff Porcaro. He was one in a million. ❤❤
I share these videos with my Drum students. The word legend gets tossed about too often these days. He's a true legend!!!!!!!!
JR is class. All the way.

Jeff will always be my favorite. Everyone is different

I wouldn't have wanted in to step into Jeff's shoes either!
I feel like I know the Toto guys just from the years of listening and watching the vids. I would have given anything to hang around the Porcaros.

Fabulous, he's a drumming legend for sure! Must go look for his solo release now. 🙂
Let the Band move on. Jeff is gone. Mike is gone. Are you a TOTO fan? Let's continie the journey.
He was never asked to join Toto so........
you can never replace jeff porcaro who ever is there is filling in jon🤟🏻
Who gives a flying F he's still an awesome drummer and he has done things we could never ever dream of.
Thanks so much for doing these interviews, John (Beaudin... and Robinson..!) JR is a legendary player and big influence of mine. Keep 'em coming!

Double scale....that's hilarious.
Love these JR interviews done by JOHN . Great stuff.

YES!!! Love JR! Go CHIEFS!
Glad to see my hit lists have been put to good use in the background.
Fabulous video, thank you 👍🏻

Phil is one of my favorite drummers!!!! I also heard that Jeff really dug Phil....Phil had the magic touch and groove...greatness knows greatness!!!

@@regaltip8A Checl out Larry Carlton's live-record "Last Nite" with JR on drums. 😉
I think JR would agree with that assessment. He even mentioned that when you hear about 4 bars from a aong, you know it’s Jeff.

according to Luke, he was not even asked.....
Huge ego's are nauseating
