There's some chatter around about string gauge. This isn't a new topic, but I wanted to try some different gauges on my Fender American Professional Telecaster and see which ones I prefer. Let me know what you like!

So which string gauge sounds best to you on this telecaster?
12-56 for me cause I'm buff.
@@mitchconnerandsometimesjlotoo dang...strong like bull
10-46, gotta be
looks like my new strings will be 10-46
10 sounded way better.
I now use 9.5's on my strat and tele. They are more comfortable ,not too stiff and not too sloppy light . I think they are the best of both worlds.
I love my 9.5s but practicing Mateus Asato licks got my ring finger in a pain.. hahaha
Ring finger.... ah, the wife didn't enjoy your playing, eh?
I didn't know 9.5s existed. Thanks!
Great video! And timely because I was about to change strings this weekend :) It confirms my suspicion that I like 9's best of all. I like their clarity and easy of use, especially in bends. I feel like I can get something closer to the sound of 10's if i do something on the amp/pedal side, so 9's give me the most flexibility of tone.
Yep I’ve got a set of 9’s in the mailbox that I’m putting on. Trying the factory fender 250L’s. Generally I can’t stand fender strings and remove them immediately. We will see how these are. Rumor has it daddario makes them for fender but could be just a rumor lol
@@GregSummersMusic maybe it's because of all the Fender Guitars are strunged with Fender strings, and it took me many years to realize that maybe they deserve attention. I played D Addarios for almost whole life, never realy like them, to sterile and clean without any attitude, played Ernie Balls a lot and to be honest they sound realy good outof the box, just they loose sound and freshness pretty quickly, Dunlops are decent strings, GHS too. So at the moment I am a proud user of Fender Strings and to be honest that's the sound & feel I've been looking for.
@@Aljoshaaa You are exactly correct on ernie ball strings. Same experience. Yea I am liking the Fender strings at the moment.
Nice job man. Not su5if you noticed when you watched this back, but the 9.5s brought out a difference in YOU. You attacked it differently and you were noticably getting into it differently (more?). They all sounded different but the 9.5s had a different mid to my ears. Kind of a honk that made them sound seemingly as loud as the 10s but different. Nice job. And thanks!
Yes. For sure. Different gauges definitely inspire you differently. Always fun to experiment!
9's. I went from 10s to 9s as well! I still use 12 0r 11 tuned a half step down on a tele from strictly Jazz chord melodies.
1:24 starts playing
I've been using D'addario for over 120 years now and love'm to bit on my one and only Gibson Les Paul custom.
120 years 💀
what are you? an elf?
Im changing all my Telecasters from 9 to 10 because of this video! 10 sounds WAY better!
I went the other way for a while but bought a new tele that came stock with 10 gauge and feels and sounds great so I’m back to 10’s. Thanks for watching!
@@GregSummersMusic I bought 9.5 but havent tried them yet.... its hard to give up the Nine's.
@@gabrieltoneguitars9365 yep I get it for sure!
i don't like the feel of 9s but in the mix i guess they are best. Others mentioned the highpass filter effect and i agree to that.
Thank you for that great demo
Great video Thank you
Listening to performances 9,5 is my favorite.
I've landed on 9's for now, but I'm never satisfied so I am sure I will step it back up, but don't see myself going beyond 10 gauge unless I was tuning down 1/2 step or more
Would be great to hear a clean sound for us who use the Tele as a jazz box.
Sorry about that! It was an expensive test so probably not something I will do again for a while but I agree it would have been helpful to expand this with clean tones.
I feel like you were feeling the 9.5s! I personally love 9.5s. It adds a nice weight to the light 9s but easier to bend then the 10s. But these days I'm trying to play a bit of Mateus Asato's licks and my ring fingers are feeling the step and a half bends with the 9.5s. But I'd say for clean the higher gauge the better. Thanks for the comparison!
It’s crazy what a difference .01mm of string makes in the sound. I love the sound of 10s but I stick with 9s because it’s easier to play.
Yea I switched to 9’s for a while and then got a new guitar that came with 10’s and I got used to that again so I’m back to 10’s for now.
Cant u put 8 gauge on telecaster?
You can but you would need to adjust the truss rod and possibly raise the bridge saddles a little bit.
@@GregSummersMusic thanks
@@GregSummersMusic no ajustements from 10 to 9's ?
9's sound best. It's like they've got a built in hi-pass filter getting rid of all the frequencies you'd filter out in mixing anyways.
Good point!
i used 9's better for my small fingers ha ha . so i can bend vibrato easliy... thanks
Great job. I prefer the 9.5s. I have them on my 1/2 down guitar and on my standard tuned guitar. The transition from one to the other is effortless. Thanks.
Great to hear! thanks for watching!
You look like your enjoying the 9.5s more than the rest. Plus with a bit of OD with a tone control you get the warmth of the 10s back. Thanks.
That was a good demo.....and here is what I heard. The 9-42's sounded more clear. Of course you need to consider what feels the most comfortable for you to play. Heavy hand may = heavier strings so it doesn't get sloppy. For your demo......my ears......definitely the 9's. Thanks!
I’m a year late, but 9s give a fuller sound to my teles and are great for smooth bends…10s on my other tele give it a snappier sound and tension in bends. Tho, I often play that a half step down as if they were 9.5s.
It does change the way you play! That’s the fun part. And nice relic job lol.. I ‘reliced’ my favorite Roland amp, but saved it from potential destruction…
Yes, the relic still pains me but I can't see it unless I look down there. I went back to 10 gauge but I was using 9's for a while on my teles until I bought my Suhr tele which came with 10's and so I have stayed with that for now. Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for this video! I think i'll get the 9.5
Awesome! I am stuck on the 9's now. Switched from 10's after playing them for years.
The 9s sounded a lot more clear and brought out the Tele sound better. The 10s had too much mud. The 9.5s were different. I think I'd sooner take easier playability over a fraction of tone.
Good thoughts. Thanks for commenting!
Thank you ! My setiments exactly. 9s give me that sound you only get from a teli especially the bridge pickup .
I guess there is merit to the hybrid sets. I like .9-.46 and .10-.48 sets. The tension is actually a bit more balanced if you look at the measured tension across the neck on a graph, and it allows you to really dig in on the low strings, but maintain bendability on the top strings.
I don’t use hybrid sets that often. When I was tuning down a lot I would use them but it’s been a while. Definitely have their place for sure.
I have squier 😣
Hopefully i have A fender telecaster Original someday...
You gotta get a tele in the family!!!! No problem with a squier....as long as you like it and it plays well for you.
Squiers are great. I've no complaints with mine tbh
Squier is great especially the CV and standard series👍
Depends on the guitar. I have several vintage Kramer Barettas. Some have 10’s, some have 9.5’s. They all feel different. I don’t lose sleep over it though! Onstage, through a cranked amp, who knows? Only you.
If 10-46 work in (E) standard would 11-59 work in D (standard) tuning?
Very insightful video! From a producer/engineer perspective, the 9.5 had enough fullness without mudding the low-mids. I just bought a Tele-style ESP with Ernie Ball 9's and knew right away I needed something thicker. I'll probably buy a 9.5 and 10 and see if I can tolerate the feel of the 9.5. If not, I'll EQ the 10 gauge to sound closer to the 9.5.
Glad you got some use out of it. Currently I’m all over the place with gauges. Sometimes I feel like 9’s and sometimes I feel like 10’s. I find the 9.5 is a bit odd for me on feel so rarely do I use them but they are still a good alternative. It’s good you picked up on the sonic differences. Many people don’t and will argue that they all sound the same.
@@GregSummersMusic sonically you call tell the slight difference between all 3. gradual and slight. the 10's sound fuller and warm. and then there is a slight reduction as you go along. And to me the 9's seem a tad brighter. especially on single notes per se.
Fender 9.5
Gibson 10
do u need to intonate the guitar after changing the gauge?
I have exactly the same guitar. I mainly play clean and use Ernie Ball 11 - 52 and love them ;)
Nice!! Yea that’s a bit heavy for me but I’m sure it sounds great.
Yep, anything less than 10.5 - 48 feels like a kid’s toy lol. Maybe because I started on acoustic. And the more stretch and complicated a chord shape, the easier it is to go wrong on slinky strings when reaching for it.
I think they all sound the exact same. It's more of a feel thing. I typically play 9's, but I'm going to try a 9.5 on my telecaster soon. 🤘🏻
Thanks for the comment!
It's a feel thing for the most part. I've played 11's for many years, but I just started using 9s as of recently, they're just a lot more fun.
@@dannyllerenatv8635 agreed! I went back to 10’s but 9’s were fun for a while
My new teli came with fender 9 - 45 and I love them . I've been using mostly 10s and sometimes 11s ! But the 9s just seem to carry that classic bridge pickup tone you only get from a teli . Billie gibbons uses 7s on his teli ! So there ya go
Yep depending on the guitar, sometimes it’s not one size fits all.
Great video. The 10s sounded just a hair fuller, the 9s a hair thinner but also more punchy. I do not have a preference based on sound. Going from 9s to 10s on teles for me is more of a feel thing. If you turn down a half step, or do a lot of drop D tunings, I think 10s are the better way to go, as the 9s tend to get more like spaghetti when you drop tune.
Couldn’t agree more with all points. That’s what I hear and how I operate with string gauges. I’ve been back on the 10’s for a couple months though. Depends on the guitar for me and some days I have different opinions lol.
@@GregSummersMusic My reason why I pulled up your video this morning is I just got a Ultra Tele for Christmas. I am going to move it to 10's today and do a setup but was just kinda getting fired up here and watching some guitar motivational videos such as yours. My band played on software called Jamulus, it allows musicians to jam in real time right from home doing this pandemic from great distances. My bass player is in Canada, drummer in Boston and I am in Maryland. I been playing on Jamulus since March of 2020. Check us out. Facebook search The IP Rockers. We have about 50 songs recorded there, we have have a few videos. ua-cam.com/channels/16XMTxwjEA44q9WKnfySzg.html
Will check it out. I had an ultra and tried 10’s on it and went back to 9’s but then I bought a Suhr tele that came stock with 10’s and I left them on and have been using 10’s since then. Sold the tele to my worship pastor as our church so at least I still get to see it in action.
@@GregSummersMusic I tried the Suhr tele but could not bold with it. I thought I'd love it since I have a Suhr Badger 30 head, but wasn't my thing. I also tried the Friedman take on T-type and it was very nice but still prefer the good ol tele. I have done a lot of mods on all mine though so stock is never my thing. LOL I have a nice Nash build which I like a lot and a pile I have built myself as well. I tend to like the Lollar Vintage and Special pickups in my teles. I play mostly hard classic rock to modern hard rock and 90s Alt rock so if I am going single coil, they got to be loud.
I felt the same way on the alt T until I saw the limited edition tele with the even c slim roasted neck instead of the even c medium that comes stock on the alt t. The pickups are voiced in the tele range but are a little thicker so playing a little twang all the way to ac/dc works well for this Suhr. And the neck is by far the selling point for me.
Ouch! Thanks for the video.
10’s.. just right. not too slinky.. stable enough when going down to Eb, 9 & 9.5 not enough.
Yep, can’t go wrong with 10’s
Great video! Definitely a noticeable difference between all the gauges. It all depends on feel and sound that you want, but I really liked the 9.5's and the 9's.
Yep that was my thought as well as I was editing. I like the tone and spank of the lighter gauge. I like the beefiness of the 10 gauge where I can really dig in so there’s no clear winner for me. More finesse with the lighter ones and easier of course.
Has anybody every done a video on the difference between Fender super 250s and original 150s? What is the difference? People talk about gauges, but never this mysterious 250/150 thing.
The original 150s were 10, 13,15,26,32,38 (they also did a 9 set with a 15G and a 40 bottom E). Fender now make these gauges again as the Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Child set, in pure nickel or nickel plated steel. Jimi used these when he came to England, and Rory Gallagher used them for most of his career. I have the nickel ones on my American Pro ll Tele at the moment, still making my mind up as they're quite different from "normal" 10s. Try 'em, the balance across the neck is great!👍
The smaller the better sounding and you played better or sounded as such.
You call that a "little" bit of gain?
Well it’s not pantera gain so there’s that.
Nice job, thank you
You’re welcome!
I use Ultra Lights 7s cause my Guitar was converted to have an Extra Long Scale Length of a Rare 28.5 inches.
Makes sense to me ;-)
@@GregSummersMusic Yeah lighter gauge strings work better on a Longer scale & the heavier gauge strings likewise are appropriate for a shorter scale. Bowed Stringed instruments in Fractional Sizes use differently gauged strings from each other & the full sized counterparts to compensate for the different scale length. I wish they did the same thing to plucked stringed instruments too cause you'd be able to get the best of both worlds, a tension that feels good & also appropriate to the size of instrument.
@@GregSummersMusic Flatwound strings on an Acoustic Guitar would be great & Thomastik Jazz Swing Extra Lights might help
All sounded pretty much the same. I guess it comes down to the feel you like and if one gauge intonenates better on the guitar
There are slight differences in tone for sure but not necessarily groundbreaking. Some may sit better in the mix than others and it depends on the guitar as well
Can you do a vid; where you use a EQ on the 9's to fill in the warm and fullness of the 10's. Clearly string tension is a thing.
But would thing be " solution " ... an option ?
I've been away from making videos for a while. Hoping to make some more soon.
Hola! estoy usando 9.5-46 de ernie ball. a veces me gustaría volver a 10-46, pero no lo sé, estoy bine con 9.5-46. nunca estamos conformes.
What. Gauge probably good for standard and drop tuning thank you sir
I’d say if you are going to use drop tuning then either the 10 gauge or 9.5 but the 10 will definitely be better when you are drop D tuning since the scale length is standard 25.5.
I just bought some 9s yesterday..I can’t wait till they ship! Btw, what model telecaster is that?
It’s an American professional. ;-)
Greg Summers Oh that’s awesome!
I really like your guitar. It'll be so cool having that tele👍👍
Thanks 🙏!
I really like the 9.5s on my tele.
Buenísimo carnal
Great video. For me, I use 9.5's but I also tune a half step down. I hate fret buzz and I also hate really high action so the 9.5's are a good compromise :P Just curious, which did you end up going with and why? I'm most interested in your experience
I switched to 9's for all my 25.5 scale length guitars in standard tuning. I would go with 10's for Eb for me personally. I use 10's for Gibson scale length though. When I was younger I used to play with 9's and when all the low tuning stuff came out in the early 2000's I found myself experimenting a lot more. I like the way I play on 9's...my phrasing is a bit different and overall just prefer the ease of everything...for now. I have hand and wrist pain occasionally so this influences the switch as well. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!!!
I have a hot rod 52 honey blonde Tele. 9,5-44 for me but i will try 9-42 for sure. Nice video 👍
It definitely changes the way you play. Some days I like the light strings other days not so much but it’s nice to have some options.
What was that little riff from at 2:40ish? It sounded so familiar and beautiful.
Nothing in particular. I’m sure it’s probably something out there since it’s a common progression. I wasn’t going for anything in particular.
Did you have to do a set up to accommodate the lighter string gauge? Nice video by the way 👍🏼
That guitar was set up for 10’s. You will usually need to adjust the truss rod depending which way you are going for strong gauge. I didn’t adjust anything for this video since it was only a test, but yes you may have to adjust in some cases. Depends on the guitar and neck but always check relief after changing string gauges.
@@GregSummersMusic thanks for the reply. I had 10s and went down to 9s and it feels good. More playful now. Been playing my tele more than my strat now
Awesome. Have fun!
nice video, great guitar
Just listening on the computer speakers, I didn't detect much of a tonal difference. Certainly not between the 10's and 9.5's. I like the NYXL 9.5-42's on most of my guitars.
Yea you probably need to listen on headphones. Of course there's a feel different but there is less of that tele twang on the 10's if you listen closely. It's suttle and of course the gain covers that up as well. I'm still on the fence but I definitely play differently on each set although I didn't play that much lead.
Good headphones like audio technicas m50x does make a huge difference (or even cheap speaker monitors). In 10's you can hear a lot of the low end and the beefiness in the strings. 9's sound too thin and sparkly (bright) which is true in my own Telecaster with 9s. I'm leaning towards 9.5s now but I'm not sure if I should go straight to 10's
Hi. Thank you for this great video. 2.5 years later, which gauge do you tend to gravitate to on your Telecaster. Thank you from someone who has used 10s on Teles for years and is interested in moving to a lighter gauge. 👍✌
After this video I was on 9’s for a while and then switched to 10’s where I’ve stayed, as far as the tele is concerned. One of my other strat style guitars has 9.5’s so it just depends on how I’m feeling, where my strength is, etc.
@@GregSummersMusic Thank you for this quick response. May I ask one more question? What would you say is the biggest advantage (if any) that 9s have over 10s. There must be some advantage, otherwise nobody would use them. Thank you in advance for any response and cheers from california.
For me personally it’s ease of playability for certain styles. For lead work on something like a super strat style guitar I like the light gauge but for rhythm playing I like the beefier tone. Some would argue the 9’s will cut through a mix better though. I haven’t actively compared that though.
@@GregSummersMusic This is great information. Thank you.
I like to run 10's on my stratocasters tuned a half step down. I run 9's on my Les Paul's with standard E tuning and I have a Drop pedal for any other tunings.
Yea that’s generally what I do for 1/2 step down. The les Paul with shorter scale always gets 10’s though. Too slinky for me otherwise.
Didn't hear any difference with your big open chords. Your sound is always thick and warm. There's a difference in your lead phrases . The 9-42 has less bottom end but is still nice to hear.
Some guitar players make the same comparison and their sound is always terrible with any string gauge .
Thanks for the kind words. I made the switch after this video to 9 gauge, for standard tuning. Depending on the guitar I will still use 10 gauge for lower tunings but my hands and fingers aren't as strong as they used to be and I play differently on the 9's. It's been a good switch for me personally.
I use 10 fot telecaster & sg, 9 for trem bridge for strat & jem..
As a long time user of ernie ball super slinky 9-42, I tried out the d'addario 9.5-44 and I think these are the sweet spot on my 25.5 scale Jackson rhoads. I tune down a half step Eb so I've always found the super slinky is just a little too loose on the bass strings for metal riffs. However also have tried 9-46 and 10-46 and neither really worked well for me.
Yea, even with the same scale lengths, different guitars will vary from my experience
@@GregSummersMusic I've noticed that as well, which doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to me.
@@LeoM-zt3pl agreed. My suhr has the same scale length as a strat but using 10-46 on this doesn’t feel as stiff as the same scale length as other guitars.
Thanks👍
No problem 👍
9.5 - 11.5 - 16 - 24 - 28- 38 is a good gauge for tele's. they seem to take light strings better. mine does atleast.
I could go heavier on the treble side...not sure I could go any lighter for the bass side for my teles. String gauge is such a personal thing, and my tastes seem to fluctuate as well as even the way I play on a daily/weekly basis. It's worse when I am switching around playing different guitars with different scale lengths, gauges, etc like I am doing lately
Great video. Just tried 9.5 and the tone, sustain and tension for bending are perfect. However, I already miss the feeling of 10s... I guess I am stuck. I already have my strat on Eb tuning and I don't want my tele to be Eb tuning as well... maybe I need a professional setup...
Yea I really just prefer the feel of 10’s at this point on a tele. The 9.5 is a very strange gauge for me. You’d think it would be a perfect in between but I just can’t get used to it.
@@GregSummersMusic Exactly. I might go back to 10s soon. Thank you for your comments!
what people dont realise about 10s is that the string that is giving you the stiff feeling is the 17 g string, it has more tension than the other plain strings and will stand out too much in chords, use a 10 set and a 16 instead of 17 for the third and you will have easier bendings, a softer feel overall and will still sound full and big.
Good tips! Thanks!
@@zaldum386 Exactly what I've always thought, I also think the G should be no bigger than a 015 on 009 sets, why can't string manufacturers figure this out?!👍
I like the sound of the 10's but I prefer the 9.5's for playability
Yes I’m still experimenting from time to time. I feel the same way. Love 10’s but depending on guitar I will will choose 9.5.
10’s are keepers. IMHO.
If you’re so inclined- try 10-48 sometime.
I used to run these many years ago but haven’t tried them on a tele. Was mostly for dropped tunings.
Great info, can we take 9 gauge strings for metal guitar like bending etc for any guitar
What's pros and cons of it
You would need to consider scale length and tuning of the guitar. If you are going to tune below standard tuning, I would personally using thicker gauge strings, even on a standard scale length such as fender 25.5. If you are using Gibson which has 24.75 then I would go even heavier.
@@GregSummersMusic Thanks for reply my friend, i do have electric guitar aria which scale length is 25" 5 648 mm right!! So my playing style is rock actually can you pls guide which one gauge should I used 9 or 10 for better tone
@@dhirenjazz8100 If you are using standard tuning, 9 gauge is fine and will help with bending etc. If you will be tuning down 1/2 step then 10 gauge is better and if you are going beyond a whole step lower, then I would look into 11 gauge, but make sure that the nut will support the heavier diameter. 10 gauge should be fine for any guitar. Most 25.5 guitars with 10 gauge in standard is pretty stiff with bending but not something you can't get used to. From a tone perspective, it will be a tad (just a little) beefier with the 10 but not much as you can hear in the video.
@@GregSummersMusic Thanks for valuable info so kind of you
@@GregSummersMusic i do have another one query is should we tune our electric guitar for practice i mean to say tension on strings play vital role to be warped guitar neck right!! So for tension release can we do regular tune for neck tension release or any tips by you for keep safe of warped neck
9-46 sounded the best for me
10s for studio, 9.5s for live performance
Good idea ;-)
Hello, i bought a Ddario XL 11-49 for my fender telecaster.
Is it too hard or is it okey?
Greattings
Too much tension for me personally but I know plenty others use that gauge on their tele. You just need to be aware that the nut slot may be too narrow but depends on the nut on your guitar.
I have the same gauge and it's okay. Better to say it is fine
thaks for teh video..First I'm a 10's user with my amreican special strat and love the sound. In your video , in sound i heard more full sound on 10's ... but between 9.5 and 9,s i can heard apreciable diference... the question is the feeling in the fingers..my feeling is that i have a noticiable diference between tens and nines, (bendings vibratos etc are very diferent) my question is how do you feel with 9.5 more near of 9,s or more near of 10,s? specially on light strings 123 . whats your opinion? and sorry for my bad english :)
9.5 has always been a strange set for me and I could never quite bond with it. I love the beefy tone on 10's and really being able to dig it without frappy/flappy feel but with 9's I play differently, phrase differently, etc. After this video I went back to 9's for a while but when I bought my new Suhr guitars they cam stock with 10 gauge and I really like Suhr guitars with 10's. It just really depends on the player and the guitar, guitar scale length, setup, etc. I did just try a set of ernie ball Turbo slinky which are new. I think I really like them since they are a smaller adjustment to the treble so are not quite as drastic as the hybrid sets. I still get the 10 gauge for the bass side but a small adjustment to the treble, and not as much as a 9.5 set. The turbo set is .0095, .012, .016, .026, .036, .046. Thanks for the comment and good luck!
I think the 9's sounded best
10 has the best energy 😉
10-46💜
9.5’s have more mid range and growl 10’s are darker
I bought 42-9 for my jackson later on i will try 10 for heavier tones
Yep, I think its just something you have to experiment with and also be open to it being ok if you go back and forth. Different guitars will respond differently to different string gauges. Different gauges will also bring out differently playing styles and will lend to sitting in the mix differently as well. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
Thanks for posting this, I was listening to a Squier CVC 60s vs an American Standard video and it seemed one difference was the Am Std 10's vs the Squier 9's leading for fuller vs thinner/brighter sound. This confirms that idea. The opening chords def fuller on with 10s. The end of the blues lick around 2:30 is too thin on the 9s. And those low E bends at the end also better with 10s. But for twang the 9s are probably the way to go.
Yea it depends on what you want for your tele in this case. Since doing this video I switched to 9's for the tele (and for other 25.5 scale length guitars) and 10's for my gibsons (24.75). Different strings make you play differently as well. I'm glad I switched...easier for me since I have hand and wrist pain every now and then.
No tone difference.
It may not be drastic but there is certainly a difference in tone, especially going from the 10’s to the 9’s. Brighter tone on the smaller gauge strings. Headphones would be best. If you are listening on your phone it will be difficult to hear. With all that said, in the end and in the mix it may not matter much, but you have choices.
It would have been nice on a clean sound only.
Yes I see this comment on this video often. Sorry about that. It would have been a better test for sure.
10s definitely. 91/2s & 9s a little brighter. But snap faster too. Damn I felt that chip! 👋😬🎶
Matt Kidd I’ve been flip flopping the last week or so. Every day seems different on which one I prefer. ;-)
Goddamit I think you should have made a helpful video and done the string gauges of 1113 + 14/15
Ouch!
СПАСИБО.
пожалуйста
From your video, I really like 9 the most, then 9.5 and then10. But, I presume that you use a same pick thickness through all ? What am I realized from my experience ( mostly hss strat last 20ish years, but playing all in all 41 year) is, that, if you play thicker strings, you need thicker pick, just to compensate attack. I'm talking about chasing the tone that I like, it's not the fact of Universe. So, strat with 10 and using mini stubby jazz 3,0 mm pick. But, here you are loosing some of picking hand speed and really brutal for high bending of 1st string upperneck. But the sound is melower, gentlier. If you use thinner pick, sound is brighter but nastier, not so beautiful. If You use strat with 9,5 or 9 and use stubby jazz, if you are not particulary gentle player, you'll break the strings very often. Sound is still good but a little bit oversomthing. I don't know what. So, I needed to adjust pick thickness, so, with thinner strings I use thinner pick, like dunlop 0,7-1,0 mm.
But, after your video, I really decide to go back to thinner strings (after 15ish years) because I like their sound better. Better focused upper mid and more clarity on the top. And, one plus more, they are really easer to play.
Just my opinion, no intentions to play smart or whatever.
Best regards !
Lots of good observations here. I agree with all you say as well. It will be different for everyone. After doing my own video I went back to 9 gauge then bought a new Suhr tele that came stock with 10 gauge. Loved that so much that I switched back haha. I’m always back and forth though.
10-46 for me or 9-46 indeed
Same here. Depends on the guitar. The teles generally get 10-46 lately.
Nothing beats the snap of 9's
For sure!!
WITH THAT MUCH GAIN, 7s WOULD SOUND JUST AS GOOD, JUST ASK BILLY GIBBONS.
No doubt it would be fine but there would be tonal differences with the same gain settings here. Ones not necessarily better or worse than the other but more of a preference at what feels better or sits the way you want in a mix.
The same sound
10 wins.
My go to as well (for now)
10s is obviously better
I wouldn’t say obviously. I prefer them “right now” but my preference goes back and forth. Their is no obvious winner here, only what you prefer or what will work better in the mix for you.
My ears ear defective. I can’t hear a difference. 🦻
