While it's true you need a loving family, you also need access to healthcare, clean water, safe, proper housing, job opportunity, education and welfare. A loving family won't stop your death from cholera, or keep you from freezing to death at night, or give a better job than 12 hours 7 days a week at the sweatshop.
@103703041961301577639 20 years ago the whole country was like this (Poor not in slums, slums are the result of industrialisation), the GDP has tripled while the population has has increased by 50%, thus the average Indian is twice as rich but GDP neglects infrastructure which when added leaves a even more amazing transformation.
+NotAsian You must be crazy. I lived in India 20 years ago, my parents lived there 60 years ago( still do). We did not live like this. Far from it. Not any of my relatives or my neighbors. And India is a poor country, was a poor country, but only slum dwellers live like this. Not villagers or the middle class, I do not want to go into how the rich live either. But the whole country was not like this 20 years or even 80 years ago.
arjun singh well said! Mind you here in the West, the Government’s aim is to create as many poor, homeless people as possible! What is this world all about?
I don't understand why people in the comments incessantly attack and label this chap as being biased and arrogant. From what I can see, he seems to be a remarkably honest host. He simply comments and shares his views on what he sees. He quite rightly acknowledges and commends the positive aspects of slum life i.e community values and low levels of crime etc. Yet at the same time he is not afraid to acknowledge and express his views on the many negative facets of slum life i.e. abysmal and utterly primitive sanitary conditions. As a westerner and a civilised person who is accustomed to proper standards of hygiene, his reactions to the squalor these people live in is wholly reasonable. Would people prefer it if he was dishonest and commended these people on every aspect of their lives, refusing to recognise the incredibly obvious flaws in their society? There exists plenty of strictly politically correct documentaries in the UK and beyond. If people take issue with what this host has to say, then I suggest that they view the hordes of other documentaries which feature PC hosts who will not offend them by expressing certain views instead.
+Werner Vlaming I agree with you. The problem with people, is they just comment negatively about someone without knowing who he is or what he has done. I've been a big fan of Kevin for his show Grand Designs and he is not afraid to say what's on his mind regarding housing.
I doubt that anyone who has criticized Kevin would be able to endure two weeks in that slum without spewing about words of contempt, shock and disgust and absolute horror. The conditions in which the slum dwellers live are so alarming that I am sure many would be too disgusted to restrain yourselves. Just imagine if you were there. Imagine the sensual experience you will have as you walk through alleys with toxic sludge and human feces on the floor. The smell. Intolerable. Everything would seem so abruptly unfamiliar. You have to show empathy when someone has made such a sudden transition from one extreme of life to the other. And do it yourself before you point fingers. Go on comrades. A two-week challenge...show your angelic, respectful, enduring side. Kevin's tolerance is sublime and is something to be inspired from. Good on Kevin.
Well said, Umar. In the late 1980s I went to Kenya. I saw street kids living in a small dump in a parking lot in the middle of Nairobi. That wasn't even the slums. I saw many other terrible things that I still "see" to this day. It changed the way I think about life. Now, I try to teach my grandchildren what I learned, but it's difficult. They don't see anything like it and probably never will. That is not good for them, to live as if there is no suffering anywhere and to think it has nothing to do with their own comfortable life.
to all thoses complaining that's the guy is judging them... HAVE U FKN EVER BEEN IN MUMBAI? when u come from a "white" or civilized country try not to complain/compare how mumbai is .... He is just overwelm. ... He still have saw all the beauty in the amazing dirt....
An exquisite visit to a very misunderstood area. Like Kevin said, high employment, no commuting, no crime, family values. Happiness is not having a 3000 square foot house to ramble around in by yourself. The filth, sewage and stench would definitely bother me but we can certainly learn something from these people. Thank you Kevin.
Don't glorify living with rats. People like acting like living in an established civilisation with electricity and social media makes us worse. U can take lessons from the slum but at the end of the day we shouldn't base our society on this. High employment≠good pay. They can earn 1 dollar a day.
It’s also sad to see how the western media never shows the good side of india and focuses on the bad side don’t u think🤣🤣? 7th biggest country in the world they could’ve taught us anything but chose to teach us about the slums so kids in the western world can grow up thinking that India’s some horrible place

Calm down people, Kevin is just challenging the claims of this slum as a model of sustainable living throughout this documentary. I don't think he is that arrogant actually.
Its amazing how small place like this producing billions of money. Kevin has done a good job to highlight lots of facts. Such as living 3 generations together, poor but happy etc etc which is true. I think people shouldn't be so negative towards this programme. Yes he did talk about the civilisation and all but thats what needed among this people for the wider vision towards the community🙏🙏😀👍

Watched this twice in Geography. First in yr9 and then again in year 11. I found it just as interesting to watch the second time round, however it's sad to see. I can't believe that India's national airport is just nextdoor to the slums as well!
Thanks so much for uploading this, I can't get access to BBC iplayer because I live in Ireland. Excellent documentary and so sad. It reminds me very much of Manilla - sad to think so many of the worst 'cities' have people living in such squalor in 2013 :/
This man does come across as culturally insensitive and I think a lot of his views are more practical and very generic of someone studying the geography discipline. His job however was to go into the slums and show viewers the reality and perhaps with a comparative to the United Kingdom things were unappealing to Kevin McCloud. Good on these communities I say- westernization is not necessarily the ticket to a happy world. It is interesting that so many viewers believe the slums need 'fixing'.
While these people might be happy spiritually, that won't help them against cholera, it won't stop them from freezing to death, it won't give them a better job than 12h 7 days a week in the sweatshop, it won't educate their children, it won't give them clean water. Slums do need fixing, these people's lives need to be improved. We do not live in a world where happiness means you can live.
If you had to watch this for your Geography homework during lockdown, consider yourself a bit lucky. If you were in school, they'd keep pausing it and asking the class questions, which wastes lots of time.
These people are filled with free enterprise and ideas I'm sure. these people are some of India brightest if trained properly and found. This would take a great movement of philanthropy and bravery.
People in India are so well dressed, and generally very good looking despite their poor wealth. They look much better than the overweight casual dressed ordinary american suburb dwellers.
Well dressed? How? Why do you people tries to make fun of americans? If you have a brain. You would know that not 100% of people in usa are fat. My bf is from America and he is very skinny, dont be jealous that we could eat okay? Thank you .
Sofiya Bae I was referring to the poor and ordinary people of both countries. I live in America as well, and the working class people here wear sweat pants and t shirts all day. Nothing as colorful and well dressed as the Indians despite them being WAY WAY poorer than us.
45:40, this. We are discussing two extremes of individualistic and collectivist societies right here. Choose what makes you the happiest and you are accountable to none.
I almost want to smash my phone when I google pictures of that 2 billion dollar home... Why is such income inequality still exist on this planet??? I don't know what billionaires did to deserve billions of dollars, but is that much reward necessary? We need another French Revolution to redistribute the wealth. No one should have billions of dollars. Millions? sure but billions??? richer than half of the countries on earth??? WTF
Hmm, a planetary revolution? Impossible given a great deal of people are untouched by poverty. How do you convince and rally the masses to action? And one detail about the French Revolution, the beheadings; unpleasant thing, that. Do all people of wealth or moderate means, either gotten by birth or sweat, deserve that fate? I'm not wealthy, but I don't live in a slum. I have a nice car and a nice home and nice clothes, should I die because the world is unfair? Maybe I'm biased, but I feel the answer is no.
Sonja Anne Maria Dover Inequality in wealth distribution is becoming more and more of a thing even in the US. The US middle class is almost extinct. This won't be sustainable for too long.
Before the industrial revolution there were slums in America and the wealth gap was similar to what is in this documentary. Today we have health codes and regulations built into the law. The middle class may be reduced but the jump from middle class to wealthy is higher in the U.S. than it's been in history.
ARVIN aww I totally agree with you, these's people that live in 10 million pound homes .just think what a little bit of that money could do to help these's people, it's like there just for got about so sad
Jane Maguire 1 family in America has more wealth than 40% of the American people combined. That is 1 family has more wealth than around 130 million American people added together. This whole system we have need to changed...
I've been fortunate enough to meet a great deal of young Indians beginning their own businesses to help their neighborhoods get themselves out of poverty, so I would disagree with you when you say "there's hardly any...social will to change the situation". Ultimately we have to begin looking to young people all around the world to change things. Young people have the will, and are finding ways.
You have to understand the values we see and they see are not the same the priorities are also not even to ours we may think they hate to live in a place with bad sewage or hygiene but they may simply over look that because of the relationships and how full their lives are and how richer they are and personally I adore the community and system created I wish to visit one day
im from england and i can say this guy is a rich englishman who has never seen poverty even in his own country thats why he comes across so rude. hes just so far removed from poverty it shows. come to the north of england to see poverty in your own country kevin. as an english person i can say this man does not represent britain he is just some rich guy who would act out of place even around poor people in his own country. come to the north of england on the estates kevin and learn how to act around normal people. much love from north uk
2:45 did I understand that correctly? 27 story sky scrapper worth a billion $ is a home for ONE family? how big is that family? lol, why would you need 27 story home?
You don't need a 27 story home. They built it because they could, instead of lifting every single person in that goddamn slum out of poverty, they built a skyscraper to tower over them, reminding them everyday how much better their lives could be, if people like that family gave a shit about them.
I'm from Mumbai and I do social work at the slums on weekends... The host of this show is ...well... Very British... Would not call him racist . A lot of ppl actually pissed off that a Britisher is coming back to the povertyhis country helped create.

This whole system we have need to changed...
great lesson was produced from just watching this vidio
Hahaha! Everyone is doing this for Geography, so am I :D
Kevin - you have balls like no other man I have ever met.
my teacher told me to watch this
I've been fortunate enough to meet a great deal of young Indians beginning their own businesses to help their neighborhoods get themselves out of poverty, so I would disagree with you when you say "there's hardly any...social will to change the situation". Ultimately we have to begin looking to young people all around the world to change things. Young people have the will, and are finding ways.
You have to understand the values we see and they see are not the same the priorities are also not even to ours we may think they hate to live in a place with bad sewage or hygiene but they may simply over look that because of the relationships and how full their lives are and how richer they are and personally I adore the community and system created I wish to visit one day
True, but it isn't like better sewerage or hygiene or housing or education or healthcare would destroy that community.
Very informative, enjoyable, and with a good balance of hard and soft data.
Geography lesson too.
I salute you for even try to live in that environment.💪

im from england and i can say this guy is a rich englishman who has never seen poverty even in his own country thats why he comes across so rude. hes just so far removed from poverty it shows. come to the north of england to see poverty in your own country kevin. as an english person i can say this man does not represent britain he is just some rich guy who would act out of place even around poor people in his own country. come to the north of england on the estates kevin and learn how to act around normal people. much love from north uk
Poor in england will be middle class in 3rd world / developing country
2:45 did I understand that correctly? 27 story sky scrapper worth
a billion $ is a home for ONE family? how big is that family? lol, why would you need 27 story home?
You don't need a 27 story home. They built it because they could, instead of lifting every single person in that goddamn slum out of poverty, they built a skyscraper to tower over them, reminding them everyday how much better their lives could be, if people like that family gave a shit about them.
$2B, 27 story skyscraper for one family. Yes, you heard that right
thanks you saved me 48mins
5:20 who else saw that bag drop behind them
haha. Good observation, I totally missed it. This place is mayhem !
I'm from Mumbai and I do social work at the slums on weekends...
The host of this show is ...well... Very British... Would not call him racist .
A lot of ppl actually pissed off that a Britisher is coming back to the povertyhis country helped create.
To those saying 'Money can't buy happiness'- If I buy a Lamborghini- I become more happy than what I would be if i lived in a 'strong community'
You can have both.
