I was a teenager and found one of these at Goodwill and was talked out of buying it. It’s crazy that they made a custom mold for these, which from what I understand would be way more expensive than just a special color and a Pikachu decal.
Also having someone hand solder the connect to port 4, installing the board in the top half, and plugging the two halves together, would be a ton of labor added to each unit.
@@Furko08 yeah, but I can’t think of another system that did special molds for limited edition consoles until the New 2DS XL. Glad they did though, my Metal Slime system is sick and the Pokemon ones were extra cool too.
I love that they just chucked an original motherboard in there and soldered on the cheeklights. To the controller ports, no less. Definitely an unexpected find.
Had the PAL Pikachu 64 as my first ever console and i still got it! Works a treat. I didnt even realise was a light blue Japanese model, only though it was the blue for PAL and US. That's neat.
Yay more James, really liking the revisiting of these old tech and the breakdowns to see what kind of computer engineering went in to what. A lil' short of a vid but will never complain.
I would not be surprised if there ends up being a console mod video on this channel, because for how short this video was, a lot of info crammed into a sub 3 minute video which is pretty cool. Also trilling cat is a yes from me.
had the blue and yellow without the moulded pikachu, discarded when it stopped working still have the controller, completely bummed it didn't occur to me at the time to just swap the guts with another one (n64's where slightly more than free at the time, 2008 ish), for $100 replaced it with a new in box jungle green one I still have and love but it's still a regretful moment.
As a 17 year old who was born way after the n64, i gotta say it's definitely my favourite console, love the early 3d graphics and I think they actually look good
Love your content. It always brings a smile. I literally got one of these 5 days ago. Didn't know the 15 second blinking was normal, nor that the LEDs were a simple daughterboard w/ a cable. Love how simple the modifications really were relative to the OG console.
Love the retro console content. Your vids are bril. Thanks for having the guts that I don’t to muck about in the innards of old consoles. Keep on being amazing.
One of the coolest limited edition consoles ever made, i got mine for 15 bucks at a flea market once, still on dislay on my shelf, love that it has a matching GBC too
I got this console back in 2013 and it cost me £50. When 'Pokémon Fever' resurfaced at the launch of Pokémon Go, it skyrocketed up to £230 in that same shop I bought it from. To say I was shocked was an understatement.
honestly the pikachu having flashing cheeks is cool af. I wish more modern things would have well thought out special editions that make the device more unique
I'm jealous of everything in this video, especially the LTT screwdriver! It's worth it, but I can't imagine being able to drop $70 USD on a screwdriver!
Yeah, it's like 130 bucks for me with taxes, shipping and fees, I'm really tempted, but that's a lot, although I might not be able to resist anymore if they launch the noctua edition
I love these sort of technical videos about old games. I’m taking some Electrical engineering and computer science classes in college so these videos are super interesting :)
I remember playing 2 player Stadium on the N64's they had on display at Dick Smith in 1999-2000. Kids would line up and croud around just to play for 5 mins
A church that I went to as a kid had an N64. (This was like 2013). Have so many memories playing Mario Kart 64 there. Its a goal of mine to buy a n64 soon.
That makes me wonder if anyone cut open the bottom of their Pikachu N64 to put a Doctor C64 on it. Seems like a pretty simple mod, assuming the extra port is actually wired up and everything. I'd probably just take a soldering iron to the plastic and breathe the tasty fumes as I carve out a slot.
I have the dark blue pikachu N64 but i had it in storage for a while and when i recently got it out to play with it again either the console or the power supply had died which is sad because the console itself is in mint condition, it still has the little ash sticker telling you about the reset button.
I’m sad that mine is missing the sticker :( The power bricks die more often than the consoles, if pikachu’s cheeks don’t light up then grab a new power cable off ebay and see if it works :)
Got one of these for my 10th birthday, still under my tv, never knew there were more colors. I could have sworn the cheeks would keep flashing if there wasn't a cartridge inserted or it couldn't start for some reason, but maybe young me imagined that.
Daaamn I didn't had one of those as my parents were not big fans of video games but a friend of mine in elementary school had one of those consoles and I just loved it.
The PAL one without a Pikachu growth is my childhood N64, I still have it and the controller. The first hardware mod I ever did as a teenager was replace the busted joystick in that thing, years of Mario Party 1 completely ruined it.
My nan had a boxed special edition n64 with some kind of add on expansion pack plus about 10 boxed games. We loved playing on it as kids One day she desided that she wanted to sell it and use the money to treat us. She just thought it was old and worthless so when the nice man at the game store offered her £30 for the lot she was happy enough to see the back of it. She gave us the money and said "there you go you can buy something newer with that." I didnt have rhe heart to tell her what it was worth
i didn't know they did a special version of the n64 with pikatchu lol, he's cute with those red light cheeks tho. i wish i could own one tbh, a clear one.
Very old hazy memories but iirc the expansion port was soldered to the board and you could take out some screws and unplug the cartridge connector for easy replacement. They were both on the same bus, not really separate ports as such, it's how the V64 and CD64 could send the required signals up the N64's bum. So removing the expansion port would have required a new part for the cart slot, maybe a new board revision, and changes to processes in the factory. If they're making a new shell then sure, why not remove the hole giving access to the port that's barely used, it's one less part to make in a special colour and they don't need to have someone on an assembly line clipping them in.
I was a teenager and found one of these at Goodwill and was talked out of buying it. It’s crazy that they made a custom mold for these, which from what I understand would be way more expensive than just a special color and a Pikachu decal.
Pokémon is the most profitable franchise in the world, so might as well make a new mold lol
Regrettable, it would have gone up in value bug a fair whack!

I’d love a pal pikachu one but I’m telling myself I’m content with one of each colour rather than every region of every colour haha
The content we didn't know we needed until now. I appreciate you sir.
Yay more James, really liking the revisiting of these old tech and the breakdowns to see what kind of computer engineering went in to what.

Is that an LTT screwdriver? 😂 cool
It is, I got it as a gift :)
@@Games_for_James Best gift, fuckin love mine though it's far more scuffed up.

this is literally the only channel that i have notifcations enabled on
As a 17 year old who was born way after the n64, i gotta say it's definitely my favourite console, love the early 3d graphics and I think they actually look good
I love the idea that the expansion port that they probably worked really hard on eventually just became a support post in this version
Love your content. It always brings a smile.

My family owned the one with the Pokemon Stadium models on it, came with a VHS of the Pokemon anime too.
What country are you from? I’m guessing Australia or NZ based on that bundle
@@Games_for_James Hey James, love your channel! Please consider making some Genesis videos too!
@@Games_for_James On the money James, Australia.
Love the LTT screwdriver sighting, that is one of the all time best fidget toys (and it's pretty nifty as a screwdriver too)
Your snake is always making funny noises I highly suggest you take it to the vet

Really liking the ends of all videos on this channel. Don't stop. In fact, all cat episodes would be welcomed.

I think the 2DS XL must have been the last console with properly cool special editions.
Your collection (and knowledge) absolutely blows me away. Thanks for sharing, I had no idea some of these even existed!

I did not know that the Japan blue one was different. Awesome video James!
Don't mind me, just leaving a comment, so the algorithm starts promoting this brilliant channel a bit more.
Got one of the Japanese blue ones not too long ago and just am absolutely obsessed with it, love them so much.
I always forget the pikachu N64 exists, and every time I’m reminded of it my day gets better
James Channel is a blessing
when pikachu's cheeks lit up i just went "d'awww!" its super cute 😭
Love the n64 I got three and I been told I have problem I feel better now
He's back
Watching these is like hanging out with a best mate. My issue is, none of my mates care about this stuff so thank-you for filling the void James 💀✌
The flashing cheeks is such a nice simple touch!
Now im trying to picture what pikachu would taste like

I was wondering too. The rest of the base might be the wrong shape to fit on it though. I’ll have to sit one on my v64 to see.
The port is wired up.
What a treat, a james viddy after garbage time

We had the flashing Pikachu console in the United Kingdom as well. I can remember looking enviously at it in the Argos catalogue 😂

The power tap from a controller port is pretty wild for an official device.
As a kiwi, I can confirm we did get these Pokémon Nintendo 64s
