That 17/18 season was the highest we finished since Sir Alex Ferguson left Manchester United. We started so well as we were just scoring goals, conceding less, keeping clean sheets and getting three points as Lukaku was scoring, Matic was doing well in midfield, Pogba was proving why he was the best midfielder that season and the team in general looked sharp and serious. But then after that 2-1 loss City in the Manchester Derby we started to fade away and our football was getting boring to watch which is why we ended the season trophy-less which was disappointing and only ended up getting top four. But that’s season we won at the home of our noisy neighbors from two goals down as Pogba made the headlines, beating Chelsea 2-1, won against Spurs 1-0, won at the Emirates 3-1 and had some other memorable moments as Lingard was on fire for us. So disappointing that we didn’t win a trophy as we lost the FA Cup final to Chelsea, got knocked out by Sevilla in the UCL and got knocked out in the Carabao Cup and just got top four but that’s they way it is. We move on AND AS ALWAYS COME ON YOU RED DEVILS♥️♥️♥️🔥
It was Mourinho’s utter cowardice and bus parking at Anfield to sneak away with a 0-0 draw that started the rot. We were flying. Scoring goals for fun. Undefeated in the League. Liverpool had only won one match in their last 7. They were there for the taking. If we had decided to attack them we could have won 2 or 3 nil easy. Instead, Mourinho decided to park the bus. Our title challenge ended that day because Mourinho had basically made clear to the squad he didn’t trust them to win a big game playing attacking football. Coward.
Seeing this compared to now is completely different. We were far from perfect but we had attacking football, big wins and we’re capable of playing fearlessly. miss the days of mourinho and even ole at the beginning.
Lukaku will always be underrated. I know he misses a lot of chances but man he was a scoring machine, too. Might have been in the debate of greatest striker of all time if he finished his chances more often. But to create as many chances as he did is a elite skill in itself.
My favourite united season ever. From this point I knew it was never the players or managers like LVG, MOU, even OLE and Ranganick. I knew it was the toxic fans, ex players and poor club decisions. If we could ruin a team this great we could never bounce back. This team is my biggest what if in football.
But even this season Mou fell out with pogba and signed Sanchez after falling out with mkhitaryan. He disrupted the harmony. He needed to keep it cool keep the squad together and that way we could keep building towards the league. This was our best chance to win it. I would've kept Ibra as well as backup and assurance the squad won't turn on mou.
there was no probs this season. ofc there was the fall out etc that i think mou handled badly but the problem was the season after. the 2017/18 season was a real progress where the team made a big improvement from the past seasons. they showed that they could be 2nd best although they where limited by squad depth. and ofc they went against a very high depth city squad. Although I don’t think anyone was going to stop City that season, losing to Huddersfield, Brighton, West Brom and also dropping two points against Southampton, Burnley and Stoke were things that probably wouldn’t have happened under Ferguson.
