When I was in high school oh so many years ago my Dad installed headphones to our stereo system…all we had we’re LP vinyls in those days. So I shut out the world and immersed myself in the glory of this work. I was so convinced I’d died and gone to heaven and didn’t want to return. How Id love to hear THIS version on headphones

This has been one of my favourite pieces of music since I saw Margot Fonteyn and Michael Somes dancing it so many years ago. And Simon Rattle feels it so passionately. Utterly beautiful....think I would like it played at my funeral. Thank you Ravel for giving it to us all 💗💗💗💗

This must be what heaven looks like , endless beautiful sunrises , the tender brush of travellers joy as you walk through a sublime forest of flora and fauna, animals who in this life would be fearful of you , are wandering up to you to be caressed by you - just sublime . And the LSO , best orchestra in the world .

One of my favorite compositions conducted by one of my favorite conductors and performed flawlessly by my ABSOLUTE favorite orchestra! Doesn’t get any better than this! And I so admire when a conductor has a score memorized. He.didn’t use a score for The Rite of Spring either. OMG, listen to those strings soar!! ❤️❤️❤️ I live watching Sir Rattle’s passionate conducting

Makoto Free The saddest thing about Ravel’s passing is the rumour that he died feeling that he had not accomplished enough in his life. For a man who published a rather small amount of music, he is one of the most influential composers of all time and I hope, wherever he is, he knows that.

So I’m like 95% positive Les Baxter copied the intro to his 1959 exotica track ‘Amazon Falls’ from this Suite 2 opening “Lever du jour”. They are VIRTUALLY IDENTICAL in the intros.
I would totally argue this isn’t chance as ‘Daphnis et Chloé’ is now widely regarded as some of the best “Impressionistic” music from the turn of the century. Almost 50 years later when Les Baxter, Denny Martin, and Percy Faith were creating “Exotica” as we now call it (they called it “mood music”) with those lush tropical stringed arrangements utilizing bongos, various percussion, maracas etc. I really do believe they were using these European Impression influences for their inspiration.
Of course exotica has a much more pacific-islander feel probably meant to evoke memories of the South Pacific for the American G.I.’s who were drinking in all those mid-century lounges after WWII back then, along with modern Jazz that came out of the Big Band era, but the differences between these styles of music bear an incredible amount of similarities.

@@Quotenwagnerianer That’s not always true. You are correct about many live performances omitting the choir, but if you listen to Pierre Boulez’s famous 1995 recording with the Berliner Philharmoniker, they absolutely kept the background vocals and it makes a huge difference as the OP above already mentioned.
