We did a heritage record tour on the Southern Aurora around 2005, up this line and on to Mudgee, then down to Cowra, across to Moss Vale then down the escarpment and up the coast back to Sydney.
Riding along this section of Gawbegar line was fantastic, we were probably the last train to do it

It's really good but can't help thinking it would be absolutely fantastic if it was reopened all the way to Mudgee, surely it's not that expensive to do

north to Mudgee would have been good, being a major town on the line

Great footage. Brought back Childhood memories. Used to travel from Mudgee to Binnaway on a fortnightly basis on the 51 Goods train ex Mudgee to Binnaway, and return the next day on the Mudgee Mail. I was a student at Mudgee High School back in 1956-57 to complete my Secondary Education. Have Railway in the blood- My Father (Ben Wakeling) was a Driver stationed at B'way for "umpteen"years until his retirement.

The tragic Irony of Australian railways. Built as a great community asset instead of a private enterprise and abandoned as a cost-cutting measure when a towns industry dies. A story is that seen around much of Australia. In this case, they were lucky the Lib-trads of the day didn't see fit to pull up the line.
