  • This is just my opinion of the Korean Language program at Sogang University, in Seoul, Korea. This is just an overall video from having studied for 6 weeks.
    I hope it was informative/helpful. If you've got any questions leave them in the comments box.

    If I'm in college but want to go to Korea and study what do I do. I am so lost. Do you need a degree to study there? And when you're there how do you get a job? I know my questions may be dumb.

    Are you allowed to work part time while in the program?

    I've self taught myself how to write and read and all of the pronunciations. I don't know any vocabulary or grammar that goes into Hangul. Should I learn more before wanting to go to a Korean University?

      from what I know, most korean universities won't let you in unless you reach level 4 TOPIK - just so you can keep up with their korean run classes

    I'm so glad I found your channel! I'm gonna be at Sogang for Fall 2016 and you're seriously helping me through this process, thank you so much. Do you plan on doing more than one semester? And if so, can you join your semesters together to do a whole year?

    • @ChineseIrish
      @ChineseIrish  9 років тому

      +seoguma You can do 7 semesters in a row if you like. I have a bunch of videos showing snip-its of my time over 5 semesters, but I'm back in Ireland these days. ^^

      Oh nice! I'll check it out, thank you ^^ I applied a day ago and I'm already so anxious. I don't know how it was for you but the application confused me since it said I didn't need an alien registration card yet it was on the actual application as required :///

    • @ChineseIrish
      @ChineseIrish  9 років тому

      That's weird. I didn't bother getting an alien reg till I was 6 months into the course.

    Hello! I just got accepted to go to Sogang this summer, and I have a rather random question. I know this is random, but how do you charge your phone and/or electronics? Did you bring an adapter with you or did you get one there?

    • @ChineseIrish
      @ChineseIrish  10 років тому +2

      I like random questions ^^
      Well, compared to Ireland at least you can buy adapters here fairly cheap. At Myeongdong I've seen them being sold on the street for I think 5,000원 / $5 each... But yeah, it's not hard to find them here and even at a convenience store they're about $10 or less.
      Since you're coming in the summer I'd say the most important thing to pack is antiperspirant / deodorant. That Korean summer heat is no joke! ^^;

    • @foreverhonest0
      @foreverhonest0 10 років тому

      ChineseIrish
      Thank you so much! I feel a lot better now ^^ Does it really get that hot there? I'll make sure to bring enough antiperspirant with me! Once again THANK YOU! :D What level are you taking now in Korean?

    • @ChineseIrish
      @ChineseIrish  10 років тому +1

      Yeah it get's pretty hot. People walking around with umbrellas for shade looks kinda silly until you're outside in it. Then you're like, '...I understand." ^^;
      I'm repeating level 2 right now but hopefully by the time you get here I'll be level 3 :D

    • @foreverhonest0
      @foreverhonest0 10 років тому

      ChineseIrish
      Oh wow, so umbrellas really help? Guess I'm adding that to my packing list haha Thank You!!
      You can do it! Fighting! That's awesome, to be level 3 ^^ I'm definitely going in as a level one hahaha I can read and I know a few phrases but I'm definitely not level 2 material yet from what I've seen ^^

    Do you need to be a college graduate?
    I am a 2nd year university student and I am taking subjects in college so I can finish early and use me free year to go hopefully go to Sogang for a term or two! What are the process you had to take? Can you explain one by one? Like did you already have a Korean student visa to submit with your application form?

    Hi Grace! I love your videos so much and you've already helped me out with a question earlier...
    My sister is getting ready to apply to Sogang, but she's nervous because she can't really read Hangul well. If someone really is starting Korean from the veeeeeery beginning, there isn't a chance their application could be rejected, is there?
    Sorry if it's a silly question, my sis is just super excited and nervous about applying.

    • @ChineseIrish
      @ChineseIrish  8 років тому +1

      +Hayley Wallace short answer is no. Your sister has nothing to worry about. Maybe if you showed her the level 1 part of this video she'd feel better. ua-cam.com/video/nYiwc0b_qtk/v-deo.html

    Can you join at any semester? I graduate in late June, so would have to join at the second or third semester

    • @ChineseIrish
      @ChineseIrish  9 років тому +1

      +Kpop Martin You can join any semester and leave any semester. In this video I was in level 1 and I joined in the winter (4th semester).

    • @kpopmartin4937
      @kpopmartin4937 9 років тому

      +ChineseIrish I see! Thank you for answering, I am currently considering Sogang, KU or Yonsei, but I heard Sogang would be the best choice for entry level. Also does the school require you to know any Korean before joining? or is level 1 as basic as it gets.

    • @ChineseIrish
      @ChineseIrish  9 років тому +1

      Level 1 should really be called level 0 because that's as much as you need to know to get into any of the language schools.
      You can join knowing nothing but of course, it's better to prepare as much as you can before hand since it's an intensive course.

    Hi there! I want to apply for this program but do you have to be affiliated with another school to do it? I'm graduating with my bachelor's degree in less than 2 months and want to study for the Fall 2016 semester. I also am not sure when the application period is for Fall 2016 semester. The website says June 1- June 30 so would that be this coming June 1? Or did it already pass... Ugh international school websites are so confusing! I'm going crazy! :(

    • @ChineseIrish

      +Lindsey Bowers
      As far as I'm aware, if you have proof you've graduated high school that's plenty.

      +Eugene Ro oh really?! Do you know the application date for the fall?! Or is it that you can apply any time? I've emailed them but it takes forever for them to get back to me. I'm a beginner so I'll probably be in level 1 class.

    • @Genewoah83

      I didn't quite see a application deadline, but I know some other schools like Yonsei and Korean University are usually around mid july

      Hey I know you commented so long ago and I don't know if you'll see this, but were you ever able to get into the program even after your graduation? Or did you find out if you can apply even when you've already graduated? I'm in my 3rd year of college and I want to apply to this program perhaps after I graduate because I want to self-study korean first as a foundation of my language skills.Thanks so much!

    hello, can you help me with to questions, do i need round trip tickets or one way is okay with student visa? i am waiting the enrollment documents but since i need to take a flight to korean ambassy i want to know how it takes, regards

    • @ChineseIrish
      @ChineseIrish  8 років тому

      Student visa is from 6 months to 2 years I think, so one way ticket should be fine.
      I went to Korea on a holiday visa with a one way ticket. It was fine.

    Hi! You've probably said this in the video or someone has probably asked this but yea. What do you do in the speaking class? Like, do u need to present something or like speak in front of the class? Thank u!

    • @ChineseIrish
      @ChineseIrish  8 років тому

      In speaking class in level 4 or 5 you present to the class but before then, not really.
      You mainly learn grammar in this class but in terms of speaking;
      You practice speaking to the people at your table or everyone stands up and shuffles around the room speaking to someone for two minutes and then change partners.
      You do different games, like theres flashcards, and you pick one up and make a sentence using the word on the card. Or you have a dialogue and you should memorise it and speak it to your partner, changing who is reading which characters lines.
      What surprised me was that in speaking class theres no mention of pronunciation. So if your pronunciation is not quite right they wont fix it, you need to go to a tutor or pronunciation class. But even in pronunciation class they won't fix it. They'll make you aware of the correct way to say things and you have to be self aware enough to realise when you're doing it wrong.

    can you only stay for 2.5 months or also longer? like a full academic year?

    • @ChineseIrish
      @ChineseIrish  8 років тому +2

      +Roxy van Kreij You can stay as long as you like. It takes 21 months to get from level 1 to level 7 without repeating. You can pay up front for x amount of semesters or pay and re-register every semester, which is what most people do. However I would advise taking a break every 3 semesters, like a regular academic year.
