I have the BX 1880 which is only 16 HP at the PTO so if I want to get something to clean up my top property with I think I'm going to have to get a pull behind mower with it's own engine. I have wished many times that I had purchased the 2380 instead but I'm still happy just to have a tractor plus the fact that I paid for it when I bought it new in 2019. Good video and it's always nice to help out the neighborhood kids.
Not sure how much you've adjusted your flail, but if you expand your center link so that the mower is higher in the front, you'll get a little better cut. The idea is for it to "rest" on the rear roller, with the side skids not touching unless you go over really rough ground. If you have an adjustable rear roller, that acts as your coarse height adjust; then the pitch you get from the center link acts as your fine height adjust. Of course, you can also use the 3-point lift for really coarse adjustment....
I appreciate the pointers! Thanks for the input. Wasn’t sure if those side skids were suppose to touch the ground or not. What you said makes sense! Keep on tractoring!
Cool mower, Jon. Warning...good natured teasing ahead... If you had an auto-connect driver over mower deck, you would not have needed to put your mid mount deck through all of that punishment. ...oh wait, Kubota doesn't offer an auto-connect drive over deck! I forgot that for a moment!!! ...end of teasing. I saw that the first tree you mowed over didn't get cut. Did you find that there is a trick to cutting those small trees? I noticed that the last one you showed DID get cut off. I would hope that it would cut off 1" sprouts consistently without breaking a sweat. I have not used one of these small flail mowers, so I have no personal experience.
Hey Tim! I actually left the deck on the tractor because it can raise up higher out of the way than most competitors 😁 while at the same time acting like a skid plate. Didn’t want to break the notoriously flimsy HST fan. 😂 I’ve got a bxpanded skid plate on the way for that. Most of the small stuff cut right away, I might have been going too fast for that mighty tree or didn’t have the flail set low enough. Still learning the best plan of attack but having a lot of fun! Keep on tractoring!
A RITTER BIT WILL DO I got a bxexpanded under armor. Be sure you let them know what side of the tractor front drive line is on. The one I received fir the bx23s had the cut out on the left side. The front drive line on my bx23s is on the right side of the tractor. I had to do some extensive modifications to the under armor to get it to fit.
I used the Sherwin Williams elastomeric (I think that's how its spelled) deck paint and its holding up great 2 seasons in. Its like $75/gallon though. Mower looks great too. Best of luck to you
That is really thoughtful of you Jon. Surprised to see you drive that on the road with no license plate. Here that would be a NO NO. Hope you have liability insurance brother. Working that tractor on land that isn't yours could cause you a GIANT headache if something goes wrong.
The rules here are less strict than what you have there. No license plate required. I should have had my slow moving vehicle sign on but I forgot. Used my hazard lights though. It was just one mile away, so not too far. The land I was working, I knew no utilities existed so I wasn’t worried. However you’re right, if something went wrong I could have been in trouble. Question: I have the same tractor, BX23S. Do you feel the EF125 is the largest mower your tractor can handle? The EF135 is a few inches wider and just a few dollars more.
That’s a good question. I think the EF125 is a great match. The BX might handle a little larger but I think thick brush would probably bog it down. *Keep on tractoring!*
No not really, they are around the same cost depending on what brand your looking at. The biggest advantage is that a flail will mulch material and is easier to maneuver. Keep on tractoring!
@@ritterjon Additionally, a flail doesn't turn rocks or limbs into projectiles like a rotary mower can. This makes them a bit safer to use in live pastures, on roadsides, etc.
@ like a lot of things, it depends. PTO horsepower going up will allow you to keep a steady speed through thicker stuff, and allow you to run a wider mower. You can go faster for a "bushhog" quality cut, or go slower to get closer to a finishing mower quality cut. (There are finishing flails with more rows of knives.)
Been running an older 60" Woods Finish mower behind my BX though all that and more without issue for a few years now - considerably faster speeds and a good finish. Much as I have considered a flail mower for a larger tractor I run I still think the brush hog is hard to beat and a 60" Woods will see 4" or better (be it behind a bigger tractor than the BX). Flails just call for too much maintenance (compared to a hog IMO).
Some of those 3 point finish mowers are a beast and can go through anything. I considered a brush hog but a flail meets my needs better as it’s a bit more compact and my storage is limited. Keep on tractoring!
My finish mower could handle this but in my experience a finish mower actually needs more power to knock down heavy grass. I mowed a two acre hay field with a finish mower once and had to keep an eye on the temp. My flail mower would have taken half the time and left a better finish cut. Keep on tractoring!
@@on4acres Without any hesitation. I cannot believe how well it’s performed for me. I’ve beat the thing like crazy and it just keeps going. I don’t receive a dime from them, just promoting a good product. 👍

Good morning. I’m looking at buying the same model flail mower from my B2320 Kubota. Betstco specs say that the minimum PTO HP should be 20 for Thank you model. My PTO HP is rated at 18, which is 0.5 higher than your tractor. Is your flail mower working well at that hp rating?
hey John I been thinking about getting a flail mower myself. my only concern is price of knives for it and the amount of work it takes to replace those blades / knives.
Hi Dave! I’m curious to find out how often replacement or sharpening needs to takes place. I think I can sharpen them with my disk grinder without taking them off. I have the hammer blades and they’re surprisingly pretty tough after running over a few rocks. I hope they continue to hold up well. I’m learning as I go. Keep on tractoring!
Your concern is true. The knives aren't cheap (if you get a high quality brand) and there's a lot of them. Also, they get blunt fast, because of how the hammers taper thicker towards the back, once they lose that edge, it's like trying to cut grass with a 3x2. If you definitely need a flail mower. They're a fantastic machine. But they are higher running costs. And personally I think over rated on grass. Not because they don't do a good job. They do. I'm taking into account how bad they are when they get blunt (compared to a rotary) which is fast if you're a contractor. It's the same as everything. Different tools for different jobs
