    Synthetics can be a viable alternative, local ecosystems aren't torn to pieces by heavy equipment, there is no slave labor and they are much less expensive. As a jeweler and designer of 50 years I can honestly say that most lab grown gemstones easily pass for genuine. One way to tell is that the lab grown has no internal flaws. Specific gravity can be used as well to be certain in some cases. I've been advocating for lab grown since the Apartide. What the DeBeers did to the people and the land is despicable. In my humble opinion, mining of gemstones in general is bad karma. We have amazing technology now, why not use it? Thanks for the rant.

    Regarding how it becomes transparent when wet, I like how it looks a lot! Wonder if it could be infused with a very thin and clear resin for achieving the same effect but permanently. (kind of whst they call "wood stabilizing")... Or is there an alterative with such characteristics already?

    • @pharaohsmagician8329
      @pharaohsmagician8329 Рік тому

      Did you ever find out the answer if this is possible? I am new to the world of gemstones and jewelry and I'm a guy but I still want an epic magical Opal Ring. I know some kinds of Opal gets cloudy, and idk if it's permanent flaw or not. Some specific kind of opal can be temporarily "restored" by getting it wet. But other opal can only be restored by getting dry fully after accidentally getting wet.
      So I too wanted to make my own rings and cover them in resin so it "stays" but idk if it's possible.
      Something cool you can do though, is Clear Transparent resin Crafts. Raw opal is very cheap and polishing it and putting it in some resin marbles made at home is something I really want to do! Or paperweights. To make necklaces etc anything.

    it just depends on what you can afford. Synthetic is fine as long as you, or the person selling it, is not trying to pass it off as real opal.
    I bet synthetic is probably a bit more durable as well, but I cannot say that with complete accuracy.
