Used to thoroughly enjoy Rugby Special shown early Sunday evening here in Wales. My all-time favourite live game has to be the North of England destroying a very strong New Zealand side at a wet and windy Orrell. Whenever I feel the need of cheering up, I just go to UA-cam and Billy's boys provide the remedy!
1987 was a seminal year for English rugby. Or more precisely June 8th in that year when England lost 16-3 to Wales in the quarter final in an awful exhibition of rugby, so awful that it had the good folk of NZ and OZ rolling around in hysterics for weeks. Subsequently, against all expectations the RFU finally woke up to a new world. It took the WRU another 10 years.
No, it has been severely downgraded. Putting on the white shirt of Yorkshire was next only to putting on another white shirt... never got that far unfortunately!
We have the equivalent in Wales. It's called "regionalism" and covers 70 miles south of the M4 and is based in the 3 cities of Newport, Cardiff and Swansea. Oh, and the one-horse town of Llanelli who beat the 72 All Black dirt-trackers in case you hadn't heard.
Hi Chris, yes it was just before professionalism and the leagues really took over, hence all the internationals playing. I remember Rob Andrew making a speech at one of the dinners after a county match at Morley and he hinted at the way the game would go..... and it did!!!
Great video. Winterbottom is outstanding in this game. Also, I like the fact that all the players still look human and are not built like the Hulk.

Yes... great game. I think it was Otley though... God's own county!!! (Yorkshire and not the dreaded red rose county!!!)
@@Riza898 It was Otley, but God's own county has a red rose, not white!! Great win here though for the proud white rose!!
Bill McLaren the commentator as Nigel Starmer Smith was in Hong Kong covering the 7s
Really enjoyed this, thanks for the upload.
Peter Winterbottom, the English JP Rives! A quiet man who shunned the limelight but what a player.
Yes... fantastic player, mind you, there were a few others playing that day. It is my rugby moment!!!

If Wales had gone that route much earlier their best players from that time would not have gone North to Rugby League
Thanks for this
What a pity that we don't have regional competitions like this anymore!

If Wales had themselves introduced the league system much earlier those players would not have gone to Rugby League
Is the presenter driving home for Christmas after the show?
Was this when League Rugby took over from County ?

Love it but maybe that's why Rugby Union didn't grow with County, Divisional and club ?
