Solid advice, Michael! I'd just add one more point about buying a vintage turntable. It'll leave modern budget turntables in the dust, but it will need a phono preamp. If the amp doesn't have one built in, then factor in the cost of a separate unit. (Used Behringer PP400s can be found easily for under £20.) That being said, anybody on a really tight budget would be well advised to steer clear of vinyl!
Yeah it's not cheap. Shop down the road from me, he sells hardware and ex army gear but one half of his shop has loads of vinyl. Thought I would find some bargains but he was asking between £20 -45 for used vinyl records.
Good advice Michael - so much good used gear around no need to buy new. In fact used gear for the same price as new will usually sound better because while cars etc have got better over the last few decades stereo gear has not!
Agree. Buying new worth looking at Richer Sounds They usually have a starter package of turntable (Denon) , Intergrated amplifier ( Cambridge) & Wharfedale speakers 🔊 I don't work for them but have bought some great value hi Fi from them over the years.
Here’s my experience and advice. My eldest son bought one of those Crossley type turntables in a sale at our local Asda for £10 thinking he was going to play some of my precious records. I totally forbid it so he bought a few new ones of his own. Total junk. He was spending a lot of money on new records so then I bought him an Audio Technica LP120USBX turntable for £250 along with an active set of speakers, Edifier R1700BT for £130. This was a present for his new house. No need for a phono amp or power amp. Sounds lovely and a bonus is he can use Bluetooth from his phone. He admits now when he plays the records he played on the old turntable he had damaged them and they sound awful and wishes he had listened to me in the first place. The AT turntable has a good cartridge with easy replacements for the stylus and will last him years.
@@MichaelYates the old saying for hifi was garbage in garbage out. The AT turntable is an absolute bargain, very similar to a Technics 1200. I have been collecting records since the 1960’s and been a hifi enthusiast as long so have listened to a lot of equipment in that time and I would recommend that set up for anyone interested in vinyl records.
Spot on why people by a £50 suitcase players then by 10 albums its beyond me. Buying more than a hand full of vinyl then get sometime that is worth playing it on.
I got a turntable Mike, a JVC L-A21 and it's decent, I just haven't bought any vinyl except one. I am put off by the ridiculous prices for vinyl. Like you say, cheap to buy CDs.

They still do, but a lot end up in charity shops when people realize they are not that good
