    Great footage and the pilot did a very steady job, well done.
    The fly by of the wharf explains why it was built at so many levels. History shows that the wharf needed the different levels to accommodate the different levels of the Murray, so paddle steamers could load and unload their cargo. Again well done and thank you.

    Great to see it all from the air. When you're on the ground it's hard to make sense of the extent of the flooding. Nice flare and touchdown btw - almost a greaser!

    This is what I needed to know. So many times with fires, floods or strong winds the news media gives a close up of some poor person who has been hit hard but never an overview. I know all these bumps and hollows and the town. This video shows the actual extent of the problem which would be extremely useful for future town planning. It is notable that the early part of town that was largely abandoned due to serious flooding has survived this flood relatively undamaged. There is a lesson there to be learned. Close ups are all very well but they contain no useful information.

      Try typing into your search bar " Flood Eye | North Central Catchment Management Authority " It could be of interest

    They say that it's a flood, but the paddle steamer's are at the right height for the wooden landing built back in the 1800 hundreds. Just goes to show how much water is taken out of the system now...

      @trojanhorse321 Рік тому +6

      Normally you would have to go down 2 flights of stairs to board the Paddle Steamers at Echuca warf so the river is high and back 1870 it was above the top landing 😳

      The wharf's height was built before irrigation to cope with floods and droughts

    • @Itmakesyouthink
      @Itmakesyouthink Рік тому +5

      @@TheInvoice123 Exactly, so they built it because of knowledge of previous floods, and thus didn't have too rebuild it after each flood, like now.

    I remember visiting the Echuca wharf as a kid, we had to climb down about 30ft to the river level 😲
    Our tour guide said she remembered walking across the river bottom during a long drought in the 50 or 60's!

    • @bunyinjbhadi7212
      @bunyinjbhadi7212 Рік тому +2

      Your 'tour guide' is mistaken!! I lived in Echuca from 1949 to 1964, and my family are still there. Not once had we suffered any drought such as described. We fished and cross-lined that river for many years, with nary a sign of ever dropping. The people of Echuca have lived long under the influence of BAD town planners and developers for as long as I can remember. My father was a Mason of the Northern Lodge, and the cronyism he witnessed in Echuca was relentless. It was my major driving force to leave forever!!!

    • @smitajky
      @smitajky Рік тому +2

      @@bunyinjbhadi7212 I have lived in the area for more than 50 years and I have done it myself. I forget which year. It doesn't mean there was no river. Just that it was shallow enough to be able to walk across in quite a few locations. Don't forget that Hopwood's Ferry was put at the site of the traditional ford of the river. People EXPECTED to be able to wade their stock across the river at least at some times of each year. The punt enabled the crossing at those other times of year when the river was high. It is only since the advent of dams that we try to keep the river flowing in summer and we try to mitigate the floods in winter. Yet sometimes it is beyond our abilities.

    Local councils along the Murray should not permit the construction of any buildings on flood plane, regardless of whether it's domestic, commercial or industrial unless they are appropriately elevated. If that turns out to not be practical from an access perspective then therein lies the answer 🤨

    • @slatibaadfast
      @slatibaadfast Рік тому

      Thing is the developers know it's a flood plain. The council know it's a flood plain and I think by law the developers are supposed to inform potential buyers of the risk. They don't and usually by the time there's an issue the developers have taken their carpetbag of money and moved on. If buyers haven't been informed in writing then all costs should fall back on the developers and council. Watch how quickly building on potential flood Plains will stop.

      You do not understand problem here. You can build anywhere, but you need floods prevention structures. DAMS irrigation systems, pump stations...Holland is below see level and no floods. A lot irrigation systems, here NON !!!!

      @@henryjanicky4978 Oh I understand, as I was born in and lived in a river town for 30 years upstream from Echuca/Moama and irrigation was the foundation the town was built on. I also actually lived in Moama for 8 years and am now back in my home town where I was born. So yeah, floods are a part of living on the river and I get it, but I don't have to like it when profit prevails over common sense😞

    Wow, at first after take off, the land looks fabulous. Then the extra waters in river ebbing out across the land.
    Looks in modern days as a flood, but in reality with my old old age is just a revitalization of land as nature intended. of the land prior to settlement.
    A risk of waters as known for centuries.
    Yes, some will scold me, but envy for fertile land closer to rivers is always a gamble, hence Insurance companies knowing the risk and adding the charges...Sorry and humble thoughts to those effected.

    I feel sorry for those who its the first time they been flooded out and they did not know or were not told echuca floods.
    As for people still living there after being flooded out 2-3 times in 40 years.
    WHY?
    Like my mate in QLD been flooded out 3 times insurance still not paid for first time.
    and he just rebuilt house for 4th time and still living there, WHY not move from a known flood plain.
