Wow! That was so interesting! I knew they used food, but never imagined that it couldn't be eaten, and wow, tampons, detergent, glue... wow! Thanks for the insight RJFS!
Being a former chef, this kinda disgusts me seeing food ruined like that. Although, I'm still impressed by it and maybe my inner film student can overcome my old chef self. sweet vid!
OnlyMichaelJackson (Angel) What? you think meat coated in glue and chemical is still edible? its a waste cus they used actual food that couldve gone to people whom are starving or homeless, instead of something such as a fake turkey painted to look realistic that could be reused for different scenes or projects also.
Luckypawpads I love how people take what I say and blow it up ×100. It's so fun. Anyone with the brain the size of a pistachio knows that raw painted chicken isn't freaking edible, thank you. This isn't JUST for movies probably, so they need it to look realistic.
I mean not really. It's a waste in the sense that no one ate it if you're thinking very narrowly about the definition of what "using" food means. That turkey was put to use, it just wasn't eaten by a human. Food products are used all the time for things other than direct consumption but that does not mean that they were wasted (examples: painting with tea or coffee, making face masks out of gelatin or honey or yogurt or oats, using baking soda or vinegar to clean things, dying fabric with turmeric or purple cabbage, buying a pack of fresh cranberries to display in the winter in a glass jar, carving pumpkins or gourds, etc. etc.). "Wasted" would be buying the food, leaving it in the fridge or pantry until it went bad and then throwing it away without ever using it for anything. That's a much bigger problem that happens much more often than a set using one turkey to make a whole movie.
That's a good point, but the thing is, unlike all the food you listed, a turkey is a living animal. They killed an animal for this, they didn't just grab a berry from a bush or an apple from a tree. Besides, they could just have taken out the parts with glue and eaten the rest, no? I mean...
In my experience a real roasted Turkey would look better in a photo than this glued garbge deception! And there would be no tragic waste of an innocent animal's life! We are accountable to our heavenly Father!
Benjamin Hackett - the point is, to make the food *look* like it's cooked, and to make it *look* good. So, it kind of does make sense to use hairspray, or they could have used some type of cooking oil for that glossy look.
Wow, amazing video. Really opens your eyes up to look at food in movies in a whole new way. One thing I disagree with though is that margarine is a brighter yellow than butter. Good butter is a nice bright yellow, compared to most margarines which are a pale hue of yellow and white. So I'd personally prefer butter than margarine for a good natural yellow look.
HeyJD depends where you’re from. Chlorophyll from the plant matter eaten by grass-fed cows will turn the butter yellow but grain fed cows produce a dairy that makes white or off-white butter.
I have been knowing this as a child back in the early to mid 90's. Another trick that I've seen before for a *"cooked"* looking turkey is using a blow/fire torch. It also amazes how actors pull it off as if the food looks, smells, and tastes so good.
Also called Dead Alive. One of Peter Jackson's first films. It's good, but that dinner scene.....bleh. One of the few movie effects capable of churning my stomach.
Mind Flowers It is! So, so gross. Oddly it isn't even their bodies steadily losing chunks that makes me sick. I can handle gore aplenty. It's the bowls of whatever (Soup? Pudding? Porridge?) that looks like pus. I'm actively trying not to gag just writing this. 🤢😂 The rest of the movie is great. Been a while since I've seen it though.
I love that this channel makes videos about things that other channels would never think of. I've never thought about this aspect of films, but now I'll never see it in the same way! Great video!
Instead of hairspray on the green beans why not just spray it with a butter spray or brush some olive oil on them? That way they are still shiny and someone can still take them home and eat them....?
What do you mean by this? They've covered lighting, editing, directing, and lots more. The resources to get a cinematic look and feel are there, you just have to piece it together yourself.
You can get that same picture perfect turkey and still be able to eat it. Use the T pins to keep the wings close to the body and fasten down the skin. Then pat the bird dry and smear on room temp butter (not margarine) and sprinkle with your favorite herbs if you want. (I also stuff tge cavity with bug handfuls of fresh rosemary, sage and thyme.) Then cover the bird in 3 or 4 layers of cheesecloth. Directly on the bird so it covers the top and about halfway down. Begin baking in a dry pan, uncovered, basting the bird over the cheesecloth every half hour with a mixture of melted butter and dry white wine. About two thirds of the way through cooking, remove the cheesecloth and continue basting with the butter and wine until cooked. The cheesecloth keeps the bird from browning too fast and keeps the skin from shrinking while it cooks. I've done my turkeys this was for years and they come out a gorgeous, cookbook cover ready, dark golden brown, moist and flavorful.
would have funny at the end when she says "Hit me" and he accidentally sprays her a mouth full of Barbasol and shes going "Arrrrrg Blrack Blrack!" spitting out shaving cream HA HA HA
It was a both informing and fun video about parts of the film that are under appreciated. Really great video... keep up the great work and have these kinda episodes more often on the show (also miss the great Pro Tips videos)
Haha, we made this dead bird inedible, so that we can show you pictures that will spark the lust for dead birds... this is so funny! (things that will be shown someday, under the caption „that completely looney people from yesterday“)
🤤...WOW! Excellent video thank you for the info. I never knew food had to go through so much just to look yummy😅 knowing the secrets I don't know if I can look at commercial food the same again.😉
8k A YEAR FOR FILM SCHOOL AND THIS IS THE BEST THING I'VE LEARNED ALL MONTH.
leandrodude Lol that's a good price. I got 9k a year for engineering
You need help.
Sam LSD Says the person whose name is "LSD"
Raeef Islam At lease that’s useful? 😂
Do you have anything against LSD? It's Lysergic acid diethyl amide . Don't be shy, share your story.
My advertising professor said when he worked on Taster's Choice Coffee, they put a lit cigarette behind the coffee to make it look like steam.
Truly the best part of waking up! Oh wait, that's Folger's.
The engineer in me is amazed, the cook is horrified.
I also have multiple personalities
as a cook,I am terrified. But...this looks damn good
Same
0 out 5! I followed this turkey recipe perfectly and it tasted terrible.
Chances are you didnt put enough dishwashing liquid.
More tampons should do the trick.
did you put enough super glue?
I'm surprised that you're still alive.
Should’ve put bleach in it to
Now even food is lying to me?
Terram Lucida Tela Concilium Life is a lie!
Wow! That was so interesting! I knew they used food, but never imagined that it couldn't be eaten, and wow, tampons, detergent, glue... wow! Thanks for the insight RJFS!
Pesterenan WOW
Fate Mandouh I'm Owen Wilson WOOOOAAAAW.
Your wows reminder me of wii sports bowling when you threw the ball behind you
Amazing video, Hannibal possibly has the best food styling put to screen.
Solarstar10 I agree
I didn't shock my green beans with iced water, but I told them their mum was pregnant. Will that suffice?
Lol 😄
No it'll roast them get it right
Alright you got a laugh out of me.
They also use mash potato for ice cream too!
But without the tampon steam.
Never gonna look at food in films the same again.
Garowice or TV ads...
Garowice I said the same thing
Ditto. Every time I see mashed potatoes in a holiday film, I'm gonna know it's on the rag!
I'm no vegan nor an animalist but the tought that a bird got butchered only to be cured with superglue and dish soap makes me sad...
Same :c
It became a model
Jostan Vallis 🤣🤣😂😂 nice one
Dalai Lamer Yeah because the turkey totally gives a shit
*t o u g h t*
I have a great respect for food travel shows now of any budget that can make the food look really good.
I wanna know how bacon looks so perfectly wavy in pictures. Maybe it’s a type of crimping iron lol
They use a baking rack tucking the bacon into the empty space to create the waves, then they just bake
Being a former chef, this kinda disgusts me seeing food ruined like that. Although, I'm still impressed by it and maybe my inner film student can overcome my old chef self. sweet vid!
The combination of the two leads to great cinema - a show like Hannibal! An excellent combination of both worlds.
TheSavageSimian it would seem better to make fake food than waste real food by making it inedible.
How is the food being ruined
OnlyMichaelJackson (Angel) What? you think meat coated in glue and chemical is still edible? its a waste cus they used actual food that couldve gone to people whom are starving or homeless, instead of something such as a fake turkey painted to look realistic that could be reused for different scenes or projects also.

*sprays barbasol in mouth instead of reddi whip*
A turkey died for this?
Faith Buice Yep. It was still used for a purpose though.
It was already dead when they bought it.
Steven Castellano Yes but in essence, arguably it was still a waste of food. :/
I mean not really. It's a waste in the sense that no one ate it if you're thinking very narrowly about the definition of what "using" food means. That turkey was put to use, it just wasn't eaten by a human. Food products are used all the time for things other than direct consumption but that does not mean that they were wasted (examples: painting with tea or coffee, making face masks out of gelatin or honey or yogurt or oats, using baking soda or vinegar to clean things, dying fabric with turmeric or purple cabbage, buying a pack of fresh cranberries to display in the winter in a glass jar, carving pumpkins or gourds, etc. etc.).

No humans or actors should eat the food. Humans or actors. Or.
noreaction you heard it as humans or actors. I heard humans, or actors, as in saying humans, specifically actors,.. but thats imo
noreaction actors are not people
Speaking more than one language might be confusing for bilingual.
Actors are lizard people, don’t pretend like you didn’t know
Actors can be animals
ooooooh this is why food always look so much better on tv & in pictures!
When she said tampons I brainstormed some possibilities of what they would be used for, never thought steam, great idea!
To be honest, Hannibal is the only cooking show I watch. All the dishes he cooks are delicious.
LOL, you can hear her clanking her teeth when she eats the whip cream. I do that too.
instantsiv I don't
I lost it when she said: "Hit me!"
So cool xD
I always thought the food in movies or shows was real and that when they were done shooting the crew got to eat the food. This makes much more sense.
great informational vid, but the waste saddens me.
P J It was necessary to educate thousands of viewers. But you can donate to your local food bank to make up for it.
Wendy P youre right, I should.
It wasnt wasted. They used it.
As someone who does marketing work for a restaurant, this was great.
what has been seen can not been unseen... I will forever remember this when seeing the commercials
I always knew it was fake but seeing the process is SOMETHING ELSE
loved it !
Just love the fact they put Hannibal in the video
I'm never going to see food commercials as appetizing now.
All that food wasted. Now I'm angers.
Jenni Niccum. Why don't you go ahead and cook a turkey yourself and give it to a homeless shelter?
"now I'm angers"
Holy cringelord
HeHasHivemind Yep, that's absolutely true! So sad.....
Miles Edgeworth
I'm surprised that you can feel cringe, *_Edgeworth._*
Antie Cuteness **cough cough** Miles Edge *lord* **cough cough**
This is the very first time in my life that I saw delicious-looking food and thought "I'm not eating that!" 😁
@ 10:40 is this girl really chewing whipped cream...
angie What do you expect her to do, swallow it all in one gulp?
Kayla Burney yes lol
So what lol. Petty
😭😭😭😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I was looking for this
It is going to KILL me to waste food, but I'll do anything to get a perfect shot. The photographer winning over the cook within.
In my experience a real roasted Turkey would look better in a photo than this glued garbge deception! And there would be no tragic waste of an innocent animal's life! We are accountable to our heavenly Father!
Can’t believe they boiled the green beans and then waterboarded them immediately after in shocking icy cold water. Heartless.
For the green beans, couldn't you just use Pam instead of hairspray?
I *think* Pam would bead up after a while, since it's an oil-based product. Hairspray is sticky and would dry shiny.
Benjamin Hackett no because Pam is greasy so it wouldn’t look as good with the hair spray if that makes sense
Benjamin Hackett - the point is, to make the food *look* like it's cooked, and to make it *look* good.
So, it kind of does make sense to use hairspray, or they could have used some type of cooking oil for that glossy look.

2:51 what weird movie was that?
Danilo F. Martins Brain Dead, it's a great film. Highly recommend watching it.
Also called Dead Alive. One of Peter Jackson's first films. It's good, but that dinner scene.....bleh. One of the few movie effects capable of churning my stomach.
+Random Rainbow such a good, fun, gross movie!
Lol i think Im the only one need to search for it....
I thought the thumbnail was fake...
Get me some crazy glue, tampons, and Barbasol, I making dinner tonight!
My favorite example of food styling, ever, is from Pulp Fiction. Oh my god, I wanted that Big Kahuna burger so bad.
I love that this channel makes videos about things that other channels would never think of. I've never thought about this aspect of films, but now I'll never see it in the same way! Great video!
I actually never really thought of food on-screen in such a complex way. This video is awesome!!
I hate being THAT guy. but wow is she's so pretty! and so well spoken. love her as a host :)
Instead of hairspray on the green beans why not just spray it with a butter spray or brush some olive oil on them? That way they are still shiny and someone can still take them home and eat them....?
Danielle Croskey cooking spray and oil drips off
These sit under those lights and outside so long you really shouldn’t eat them. Bacteria loves that environment.
Jimmy Wong is so adorable 😍😂
This was all sorts of awesome. Thanks for sharing guys. :)
I feel cheated .All those mouth-watering videos I have every watched.
Is that how Instagram Queens do it? 😂😂lol I love this so much
I have a friend whose mom is a food stylist. She's a really cool lady. :)
The technique for steam was the most unique part, period
This type of stuff is so interesting to me lol i never thought stuff like this is so technical
SO THEY JUST WASTE ALL THAT FOOD?!?!?!?
Loved the video! Laughed and Laughed. But learned something, too! Thanks!
P.S. Don't get the Reddi-Wip and Barbasol mixed-up!
At the very end you guys missed a joke opportunity. Jimmy should've said "hit me" too.
Jimmy's back! Video looked delicious ;P
Awesome and very helpful techniques
do a tutorial on how to get the cinematic look and feel
What do you mean by this? They've covered lighting, editing, directing, and lots more. The resources to get a cinematic look and feel are there, you just have to piece it together yourself.
Mother Football game
Awesome ideas and very interesting it's like Martha Stewart meets MacGyver LOL
10:38 you can hear her teeth chomping from eating the rediwhip... yuck.
This was really informative, plus you two have great charisma. Thank you for sharing.
I screamed when I saw Hannibal

My parents barely cook and still get gorgeous turkey without glue.
Exactly
Krystal Dispatch Bettty Mcginty Carter it won’t look good after a few hours under hot, gross lights. Won’t even be edible anyway.
For every steamy food in commercials, I will now always think of tampons
that turkey just died for that😂(no hate)
I have both learned a lot and become quite hungry. 10/10
10:40-10:42 you can hear my girl CHEWING whip cream lol
Is it true that when shooting ice cream they use colored mashed potatoes instead?
I don’t mind ads, I don’t mind buffer, but when the ads buffer I suffer!
I watched this in 2016 why am I watching it again
Alright thanks UA-cam for the recommendation, glad to know everything I've seen is a lie
True art form
loved this video! watched it a bunch of times. Can't get enough!
I have no idea why I'm watching this
I'll never look at steamy food commercials the same
Food styling 😍 so satisfying
I get so excited for these vids
would have funny at the end when she says "Hit me" and he accidentally sprays her a mouth full of Barbasol and shes going "Arrrrrg Blrack Blrack!" spitting out shaving cream HA HA HA

Shes biting the whipped cream. AHHA
My biggest regret with The Wokking Dead was not having a food stylist on set.
ok, nobody knows what it is. thanks for the info tho
Hah... next time you see a food ad on TV and say yumm, remember you are drooling over hair spray, engine oil, shaving cream and tampons.
"Now we have a place to put the tampons "!!! Lmao 😂 😂 WTF
I’ve been trying to find the name of the movie @ the 2:50 mark for over 20 years!... Dead Alive!!! Thank you. Now back to the food preps. 😀
I got a food styling ad before this
I heard for Ice cream they actually just use mashed potatoes and for cereal they use glue ick but so appetizing
I’m sorry but there are literally people dying of hunger in the world, yet we are here superglueing a turkey for the camera
Did anyone else just completely fanboy/fangirl when they saw Jimmy Fong and then the VGHS scenes?? No? Just me?...
Never gonna look at steamy food the same again.
Haha, we made this dead bird inedible, so that we can show you pictures that will spark the lust for dead birds... this is so funny!
(things that will be shown someday, under the caption „that completely looney people from yesterday“)
Every day I realize I've been lied to again my entire life
🤤...WOW! Excellent video thank you for the info. I never knew food had to go through so much just to look yummy😅 knowing the secrets I don't know if I can look at commercial food the same again.😉
My mind is telling me no but my stomach is growling
congrats on 300k subscribers, RJFS!
Real whipped cream made from heavy whipping cream and air doesn't deflate as easily but it does go rancid under hot lights
great for stock footage : >
Well, at least we now know where all the budgeting went
interesting! one question though, how do they solve the problem of the pie sweating? custard pies (like pumpkin) bead sweat when left out
Thanksgiving lunch will never be the same. I can’t get the steaming tampons out of my head
