  • In this video I share some hard learned tips and tricks for making air travel with photography gear a little bit easier and I will show you whats in my camera bag. Traveling with photography equipment on airplanes is a pain but it's worth it to be able to visit and photograph new and exciting locations. As an Olympus Visionary and Photo Educator I travel frequently and that travel generally requires flying with camera gear and computers and lighting.
    Backpacks are the way to go for your camera gear. Traveling with cameras in a backpack allows you to keep your hands free to manage your checked luggage cases. My air travel backpacks of choice are made by Think Tank Photo. My three go-to bags are the Think Tank Photo Urban Approach 15, the slightly larger Think Tank Photo Airport Commuter Backpack, and my biggest, the Think Tank Photo StreetWalker HardDrive V2.0. All three fit easily in the overhead bins of full size jets as well as the smaller commuter jets.
    This video shows off my travel photography gear and my top 15 airline travel with photography equipment tips. I hope this gives you some ideas to help you decide on your travel cameras and how to handle air travel with photography gear.
    If you have some tips on flying with camera gear, please share them in the comments below.

      I love my combo: E-M1 II + 7-14 pro + 17 1.2 pro + 14-40 pro + 40-150 pro + MC14 teleconverter. And sometimes i also add 45 1.8 because it weights nothing. This kit is comfortable to carry around all day even in messenger-style shoulder bag. I hate "photo bags", they are too damn ugly and weight a lot even empty, so i use casual bag with padded insert from Billingham and it help me keep everything organised.

    I live in SE Asia and I used to travel back to the USA frequently ... mainly JFK. One time on my way back to Bangkok, I went through bag check at JFK. I hand carry my gear in a backpack. After scanning my backpack, a TSA representative asked me what I had in the bag. I nonchalantly informed him that I had a DSLR camera, two separate lenses, spare batteries, CF cards, and two flash guns. WOW, I can still see the look on his face when "two flash guns" registered in his brain. I immediately sensed that there was a problem that could escalate quickly. I quickly explained to him what "flash guns" were. He checked them out and things settled down. I now refer to those devices as "speedlites" - never, ever to be referred to again as "flash guns"

    Joe, I wish I had a look at your vid before my visit to Japan two weeks ago. Man was I unorganised. I just stuffed everything into spaces I could find and then fumbled to find the "everything" when I started shooting. And I got the eye-rolls from those who went with me. Thanks for some great tips .

    Very good information! Photogear is actually allowed to take into the plane, so I put anything else into my suitcase. In Lviv (UA), the customs had no idea about photogear, so I had to explain and show them, which wasn't such a hassle and took about 10 Min.

    In Australia the cabin baggage limit is 7kg, and the airlines have started weighing. So checking your airlines limit is a very important tip there.

    I have the think tank hard rolling case, SKB ISERIES 3I-2011-7DZ ROLLING CASE & CARRY BAG. The removable zippered interior features a deluxe Nylex-wrapped closed-cell fitted foam liner and seven Nylex-wrapped closed-cell foam dividers and three nylon dividers with heavy-duty hook-and-loop tabs to create the perfect fit.
    I love it.

    I learned that even when you make EVERY plan to NOT check bags, the airline can sometimes force you to check bags. Read the solution of putting the camera around your neck and carry any other necessary bits in the carry on bag 1 that goes under the seat. Also, are you editing your own videos? How do you find the time? Great production value!.

    Thanks for the tips Joe. I travel every year to Asia. Currently I’m allowed two 15 pound carry on bags. Even though my gear is Fujifilm mirrorless I can easily use up the 30 pound total allowance. Other less sensitive gear goes into a camera packing cube inside my checked in bag. Even though you use the Pelican case for your AD200’s I just shudder to think how the baggage handlers toss that through the air. Just wondering if anyone has experienced damaged equipment and what the airline did to compensate ?

    I send photos of my documents, credit cards, serial numbers of the equipment and all the data of the trip to an email account that I only use for that. If I lost or someone steals them, I can obtain a copy from any computer, which would make it easier for me to do anything.

    Wonderful video Joe! I guess we both need to join BA (Bags Anonymous), as I too seem to share your malady. I usually travel with a LowePro X300AW roller for most of my commercial gigs, which fits well in most overhead bins. Maybe the best (and possibly the worst) part of shooting with the wonderfully compact @GetOlympus gear, is that I can pack: 3 - E-M1 MkII's w grips, every PRO M Zuiko lens (8mm, 7-14, 12-40, 12-100, 40-150, 300, 17, 25, 45), 1.4 TC, 60 Macro, chargers, FL-900's, spare batteries, Profoto TTL-O triggers, accessories, 15" MacBook Pro and still have room leftover! Thanks again and safe travels!

    A big plus is to be aware of where camera equipment can be rented in a hurry in case of emergency. Outside of San Francisco I had a light stand and attached equipment fly off a cliff and disappear into the ocean. I can’t say I was happy but at least by the next day I had temporary replacements to get me by for the time being.

    I have only flown within the UK and as I am partially sighted i get special assistance through the airport to the plane. You should see the security staff looking at me as I am led through the scanner, my white cane has been taken to be swabbed, and they see the camera gear in my backpack. Gives me a wee laugh when I explain to them that yes I am going blind and am a photographer

    I inventory all my checked cases before leaving baggage claim. If something did go missing during screening or get damaged in handling, I can file a claim on the spot and immediately begin to hunt down a local source for rental or replacement. Sometimes Plan B just isn’t enough

    I'm not sure about 40 pounds of carry-on, but when I travelled internationally, they allowed only 14 pounds of carry-on and recently after a couple of email exchanged, the airline told me that I can apply for cabin baggage which allows more than 14 pounds. I also used Airbot lock to lock my carry on as well as check-in ones. The Airbot allows me to use my phone to monitor my baggages and alert me as well.

      Tazmanian Devil - I carry 8 rechargeable AA's - 2 spare batteries for the Olympus OM-D E--M1 Mark II's and each had two batteries installed for a total of 6 batteries. 2 spares for the Olympus Tough TG-5 and 2 spare batteries for the GoDox AD200's. In the lighting case - all of the AD200's have batteries installed and all of the Wireless triggers have batteries installed.

    Fantastic recommendations Joe... I will follow them throughly!!!. I was recently in India, and literally you have to remove every single electronic gadget from your Backpack when going through security... so having your gear organized comes absolutely handy. I will have a look at the ThinkTankPhoto, as they look amazing. I wanted to ask you a question, that you may want to answer on your next video... What is your opinion about cropping a photo? I do mostly street and seldom do it, but I realize that in some cases it could improve the framing???... cheers and thanks again... Raul

    • @theJoeEdelman
      @theJoeEdelman  5 років тому

      Thank you for the kind words Raul Farfan! I have no problem with cropping an image - I do it all the time - just don't get lazy and be the "I'll compose it in post" photographer. I like to shoot for my intended crop - but sometimes that just isn't possible.

      Joe Edelman thank you Joe !! Very insightful cheers ... and just to add a bit more info in the India trip... when security asks you if you have a camera and other electronics is because you need to pull them out of the backpack in a separate bin... Adios!

    Here is my tip: If you are traveling outside the country, but don’t want to pay for Global Entry, use the Mobile Pass app to speed your way through customs almost as fast as Global Entry.
    Here is my second tip: Pack a lightweight fold-up duffel bag to use to bring stuff back in, especially if you only check one bag going over. You can pack souvenirs and your dirty laundry in the duffel.

    • @theJoeEdelman
      @theJoeEdelman  5 років тому

      Anything is possible Reverend Al - but I don't see that happening anytime soon. There are no options currently for an LEF that can match the lumens of a 200ws flash in as small a case without AC. I think that is still quite a way off.
