  • In the days leading up to the 1987 general election, party leaders Margaret Thatcher (Conservatives), Neil Kinnock (Labour), and David Steel (Liberal-SDP Alliance) took turns to face a live studio audience and answer questions put to them by residents of three key battleground constituencies: Dudley West, Cheltenham, and Calder Valley. The three programmes together give a fascinating insight into the main issues in that year's election as well as the personalities of three of the country's most influential political figures.
The first programme, broadcast live on Friday 5 June 1987, saw Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock fielding questions on a range of topics including the north-south divide, Labour's relationship with trade unions, Labour's policy on nuclear disarmament and other questions of Cold War defence, and whether or not Mr Kinnock would be willing to enter into a coalition with the Liberal-SDP Alliance in order to unseat the Conservative government led by Margaret Thatcher.

Even this debate is more interesting than yesterday's two leaders debate.

Only because, like most tiresome nostalgists, you live in the past.

Thatcher was a high handed, mean-spirited, and belligerent individual who peddled an demented political and economical ideology of cutting taxes for the rich, cutting government assistance for the poor, and cutting regulations for the banks and corporate businesses, in the misguided and obsessed belief that it would lead to economic growth.
Instead, it has caused high public debt, extreme poverty, and wage inequality, which the UK is still struggling with today.

Yeah. but Blair didn't reverse this, and opened up mass immigration on top of this. Now Britain is a poor country where all money is sucked up by London

The neoliberalism Thatcher followed centralised investment and does to this day. Kinnock eludes to this by mentioning the depression that would be caused removing this. The level of discourse is well above what we see in modern politics. Although one could argue Kinnock was unsuccessful, cos his pitch is simply too honest & complex for the average voter to comprehend!

Irrespective of policy, these three episodes (along with the two featuring David Steel and Margaret Thatcher) say a lot about the current quality of discourse, our politicians, and perhaps most concerningly, our mutual tolerance and respect as a society. Again, policy aside, my favorite was David's. His and the audience's conduct was genuinely about seeking mutual understanding (not agreement). All three should be manditory training for all MPs before TV debate. It is very sad to see what the sphere of politics has become; one only has to read some of the comments here to see the distinction in how the audience chose to engage and what we have today.
