- A Cheap DIY PVC Vocal Booth? Is it possible to build your own? Yes!
In fact, so many people have contacted us about how to build their own PVC vocal booth that we thought we'd share an in-depth walk-through on how to build one for yourself. We're going over what tools and materials you will need, and some other tips and tricks on making your vocal booth the best it can be. Our PVC pipe vocal booth example in this video features an 8 pole step-through door design, with no break half-way that utilizes 3-way connectors. We understand that 3-way connectors may be hard to get so we offer an alternative. We go through the assembly and build of the booth and blanket installation. There's also a sound test which we've experimented with so you don't have to test a single or double-layered booth yourself.

I've been using this setup for a while now and it's SO GOOD! I throw an additional blanket over the top and some others around where I record and get such clean audio, it's great!
Just built this and I love it! The blankets from you are great! Thanks for the detailed instructions. I really appreciate it.
Great! Thank you for the good word!
Can't wait to buy my pvc pipes tomorrow and get to work using this model!
Just completed the frame, I love it so far.
God bless you poorman's booth maker!!!
Thank you so much!!
Thanks so much for posting this video!! Followed your instructions and it was as easy as you make it look to put this together. It really helped to have all the materials needed and measurements provided. A fun project that really enhances the vocal quality of recording. Great job putting together a video that is easy to follow and offers a real solution for people recording at home!
Thank you!
Finished builiding mine, was super easy with instructions. My blankets are on the way to be delivered tomorrow. Thanks everyone at VBTG!

thank god for this video !!! i've seen so many videos of people using wood and I just don't have the strength or equipment for that. I"m gonna try this thanks!
i m too loooooooooooooooool
Great video and this seems to be a good solution for stopping the reflections. However, one question, does this decrease the sound that comes out when you record? I am interested in finding something that will minimise the noise so as my neighbours will stop complaining when I sing loudly.
Thanks a lot.
This booth would good for blocking out about 10dB of sound while also removing the reverb and echo from your recordings. If you require more than this, you would be better served inside one of our sound proofing booths. Check out the booths we carry for this: www.vocalboothtogo.com/product-category/mobile-recording-booths/mobile-sound-booth-soundproof/
Simona- Valentina have you found a solution for that? I have the exact same problem.
Weird As Heechul I am actually doing some research now, not really building my booth yet. But I was told by Vocalboothtogo that the one above only decreases about 10db... pleaser see their reply above for more info. Hope you will a good solution for yourself. 👍🎶

Yes, if you check the part 2 we show how you can easily change the size and configuration of the frame.

I just ordered one. I plan to use blankets and also cover it with mass loaded vinyl.
@JDS music I don't know but I don't expect it for at least a week
@JDS music A bit more than a week--to Alaska!
Hi there,
I’ve bought my pipes and sound blankets from VBTG. I’ve recently been using the boiler cupboard which is small but has been very well insulated. My problem now is that if I stay in this space my booth can only be 82cm x 95cm. My question is, although small will it affect the sound negatively being so small? Or, should I build a bigger booth to go into an untreated bedroom?
Thanks
Just finished mine and I love it! thanks for this video
Good luck!
Built this today! Nice setup and it works great! Thanks for this..
Best of productivity!
@@Vocalboothtogo thanks. I did mess up on the front part. I didn’t put the arms upward on the bottom part so I do have a little step bit it helps with keeping the blankets down…
Such a helpful video! Thank you so much!
Question: What mic are you using?
Is it an iPhone in all 3 situations? I'd love to hear a condenser mic in there. Seems like there's still some weird background noise? Definitely a huge reduction of reverb though.
Plus it doesn't help that, according to a reply to another comment, they added compression and eq.
Wish they would have auditioned the raw audio.
To me it helps if they put compression on, all these tests are usually without, and I need to know what quality I'm getting after compression, because that's the real revealer of a bad room.

I can hear a white noise from the inside the booth track, is that from the mic or from the booth itself?
Was just to comment on that. I think those that can afford a pro mic and preamp & Audio interface will be worth the money spent. Noise Floor and a Ccean signale coupled with this booth should suffice.
For the sound test, are you using a clip on mic or the mic on your phone?
@@r0ck99videos that is a good question! I think we were using the phone for the testing

@KingsleyChim-s2u hi..sure you can use metal, if it is cheaper and more available

Hello everybody: to help you figure out how to make a custom size PVC vocal booth frame, we created a special calculator for DIY PVC frame: www.vocalboothtogo.com/select-custom-pvc-vocal-booth-frame-calculator/ all you need to do is to enter the size of the frame you want to build and the calculator will show all the cuts and sizes that you need. Oh WOW so amazing. I was just working it all out myself. Thanks for this 🙂
Great work! But I can get spv blankets here in Argentina, how can remplace them? A blanket made of what matterial? Thanksss
Hi. I am not sure of these was a typo or not: what is spv blanket and did you mean you CAN or CANNOT get them?
How about ventilation? Is there a way to install AC or exhaust? Thank you.
For ventilation you can insert a hose from portable AC under or between the blankets.
It does not need an exhaust, because the panels are "breathable ". So use active air input with passive output.
will this isolate sound? I wanted to hear what it sounded like from the outside
It will dampen the sound. But please always realize that there is a difference between sound absorption and sound blocking products. Also consider that to isolate sound you have to create an alright enclosure.

Can we use normal summer blankets ? Will they absorb sound?
"Normal summer blankets" I assume are light duvet? What is normal summer blankets? The Producer's Choice Blankets are filled with cotton and are very heavy. If you find something like this, then yes. If you are talking about light weight polyester duvet or thin novowen blankets that might be used as a beach blanket, then you will not achieve good results
@@Vocalboothtogo means the one u used in this video with bedsheets... its not too thick... I made a vocal both which is quite large that my computer table fits inside. I'm thinking to use a blanket just like of yours to hang it in double form on the walls as I can't afford buy moving blankets right now Cox of low budget.. and if I use bedsheets with it as well just like u did... will it work ?
Or if not, using multiple cotton bedsheets will help or a normal thick blanket will also do the job ? Please suggest me
@@programmingwithsarah409 in this video we used our Producer's Choice Blankets. You can get them at www.vocalboothtogo.com
I understand, that you are looking for a substitute, but whatever you are planning to use will need to have sufficient sound absorption efficacy and weight.
I cannot suggest you using layers of bedsheets or bath towels. Because in one or two layers it is not going to work.
In my opinion it is a false savings to use subpar materials and hope to achieve good results.

What is 1.5 cut connectors
1.5 connectors? You mean those short piece of pipe? These are just to connect the actual connectors. For more details and to create your own custom size frame you can use our DIY PVC frame calculator:

The 90 degree and tee connector are the same size in having trouble with trying to connect them together to make that turn stores are telling me the have nothing for it

If you enter the frame size you need. The calculator will tell you how many pipes and connectors you need and what length to cut.
Quick Question: Does it matter if I use SDR-26 PVC pipe or Schedule 40? SDR-26 is less expensive than Schedule 40, but I don't want to purchase it unless I know it will serve the same purpose. Anyone? Bueller?
Bueller took a day off. :)
I am not sure how SDR-26 will behave. I think you can test it.
From what I know "26" means that the thickness of the wall is 26 times less than diameter. I think the smallest diameter of the SDR-26 is 1.5 inches with wall thickness of 0.09 inches. That seems thin to me.
On the other hand you need the connectors. Do you have the connectors?
@@Vocalboothtogo I've decided to go with Schedule 40. The SDR is flexible under pressure and I don't want my PVC bowing from the weight of my sound Blankets. I already have all of my connectors, grommeted blankets from Northern Tool, and flooring - I just need the pipe. Thanks for the vid and advice. Wish me luck Bro!

I'm not concerned about reverb as much as noise reduction, will I be able to scream my lungs out inside the booth without getting any noise complains? if yes, is a single layer good enough for my needs? and does the VB72-G do the job?
Hello. For soundblocking you would need something with more mass, like SPB booths

If the pipe is 1 inch thick how thick is the t connectors and 90° connectors?
Hi, 1) Which pvc cutter are you using? I searched on internet and there are so many I got very confused. Can't go and examine them in the shop due to lockdown. 2)Your list mentions pvc glue, but you didn't use any. Is it compulsory? 3) If glue is used, will the structure remain collapsible?
Hello. This was a demo video . That is why we did not use glue. We did show at one point how to use it.
Is the glue compulsory? I should probably put together a video of cutouts to show what happens when the frame is not glued together. It just falls apart when you try to hang blankets on it. Once you glue parts together you will not be able to take them apart.
The pipe cutter?
We actually used a saw to cut the pipes. It is much faster. Hack saw or jigsaw work well.
If you are thinking of disasembling the frame i suggest to only glue the top and base frames and se duct tape to secure vertical supports.
@@Vocalboothtogo Okay, thank you so much. Really nice of you to explain in detail and the prompt response too. I'll be doing all this for the first time, hence so many queries. Thanks again.
What was the glue used for?
And wouldn't 1 inch thick pvp pipes make the booth flimsy to where it may collapse especially if you double layer the booth with blankets?
Is this booth only 6 feet tall?
Thanks
The glue is used to connect the joints permanently. We didn't use it because I shot this in a basement and would not have been able to remove it if i did. If you are planning to use this booth, i would glue it. The 1inch part refers to the pipe inside dimension. They are plenty strong to hold, no problem. The booth shown here was 6.5 foot tall.
@@Vocalboothtogo thank you! Just for clarification, the pvc pipes are not inches thick? If not, how thick are they? Thanks
@@audiomc3370 1 & 5/16th is going to be the outside dimension of the PVC poles.
@@Vocalboothtogo got it thanks!
@@Vocalboothtogo any black Friday deals?
You have to glue the pipes together so that they don't fall apart, right? Without glue, they'll just fall over due to the weight of the blankets hanging off of them. If I wanted to disassemble this booth, is there an easy way to take them apart, despite the glue?
That is my question is well. I think the answer is no - once it's glued, it's stuck together and you can't take it apart, unless you pull out that PVC cutter. But if someone else can answer that question, it would be appreciated.
@@lyndraski4152 I actually managed to build my own booth without glue! If you use white and grey pipes, they stick together pretty well on their own.
@@SlickFrame *sigh* now they tell me. Thanks Slick Frame - I just glued the joints but didn't glue the poles. Now I have to tackle learning Reaper...
@@lyndraski4152 You're welcome! Good luck!
I've been considering on getting this. I'm not too educated in how the blankets go, but I do know for booths that they need additional acoustic foam and others to accompany it. Does this need it too or will the blankets do the trick?
And do we have to do something with the floor....?
The blankets totally do the trick. But you need the acoustic blankets. People have to add foam if they use moving blankets. If you use producers choice blankets there is no need to add foam.
@@WrBlPro there are two concerns with the floor treatment: 1. Vibrations ( sound transmission to microphone). 2. Reflections. A rubber mat will take care of vibrations. Thick carpet will take care of reflections.
@@Vocalboothtogo Ok, cool shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the prompt answers.
Do you have to use PVC glue? I'm only asking because I live in a small space and would like the option to be able to stow it away when not in use.
We actually making a video to answer that exact . In reality you do not have to glue it. Iy just makes the structure prone to collapse if you do not push the connectors all the way in. At the same time if you do push them all the way in, then it is very hard to pull them apart even without the glue.
If the goal is to take the frame away when not in use, then the AVB booths are the way to go. www.vocalboothtogo.com/product-category/mobile-recording-booths/mobile-acoustic-vocal-booth/

My pvc pipes keep falling when I try to put them together how did I fix this ? Thanks
Not sure I understand: are they falling AFTER you assemble it or IN THE PROCESS?
If it is After, then you need to glue them together.
If it us in the process, then you also need to glue them together.
The steps are:
1) Assemble the base without glue, make sure all parts are correct. The T and L connectors are facing up.
2) pull the parts one by one, glue and fit back together. No rush. The glue will catch within seconds.
3) assemble and glue the top the same way.
4) connect verticals.
5).place the too rectangle on top of the vertical posts
It should work.
@@Vocalboothtogo ok thanks so much I guess it was the glue. It’s been falling during the process off putting it together but I wasn’t using any glue.
I was wondering I know that you marked down (14) 1" inch PVC T connectors but do you mean 16? cuz I was trying to count it on the video? and then you put (10) 1in PVC 90-degree connector and I was wondering did you mean 8 because I'm trying to I can't count where the other two is at?
Never mind about the 16 joint conectors 😄
Is it hot In there how do I keep it cool
It does get warm as in any closed up space, but this booth is not entirely airtight.

Moving blankets
@@justboy74 moving blankets are thin, reflective and not the same thing as our blankets at all. In fact we were a distributor of moving blankets before we developed the Producer's Choice blankets.
I'm almost at the point where I'm buying this! I'm starting my own voice acting studio at home and my desk is inside a big room with a high ceiling so the option with the PVC pipes and blankets suits me well. Only a few questions:
1. I have consulted with many sound designer friends, they think that for the highs and echo the blankets can do the job but for the lows, it can get messy and my recording could sound "muddy", so without disrespecting, are the blankets to your professional opinion is comparable to a "proper" sound studio with styrofoam/Rockwool and other absorption material on the walls?
2.a Does the size of the booth makes a difference in the sound?
3. I have an idea. When I order, can I request that one blanket (for the celling) will have the grommets on all sides of the blanket so I can attach the ends of the blankets with shower curtain hooks? (so it will be really stretched above it and not loose)
4. I have also an idea to make a "door" and in the entrance to just glue some magnets so it will be kind of closed. What do you think about it?
Get some bass traps and put them on the inside especially inner corners
Hi Daniel, 2 years later... did you end up using this design? Did you make any additions/mods?

What dimensions is your booth and where can I buy the pvc tubes that you've listed? Additionally, your UK shop doesn't sell the 'sb-vg' blanket that is recommended and linked to the US shop.. Bit confusing. Thanks
Hello Charlie:
The UK shop does carry the SB-VG blankets, but unfortunately they are out of stock. And the container with new inventory is being delayed at a transit port. The pvc booth can be made of any size. If you are interested in specific dimensions, send us an email request and i will send you a formula, where you can enter the final dimensions and it will calculate the size of all parts and suggested quantity of grommets.
And finally where in the UK you can get the PVC pipes? I would assume that any plumbing shop would carry them.
Where do you place the mic stand/boom at? Has anyone experienced feeding through the roof?
I just built this. Great design and glad that you can expand it if needed in the future. I likely will as it is snug.
I was able to make it a little bigger with the same materials using math.
Even so, I am trying to set up the mic so that the stand’s legs are out of the way.
Thanks
what about the pvc glue? how to use it?
Depending on the brand of glue you get. Some have primer and glue and some are primer and glue together. If you use the first option then apply the primer on the parts that supposed to be glued first. This removes any dirt and oils. Then apply yhe glue and insert the pipe into connectors. If the glue and primer are all in one, then you only need to apply it one tims and insert.
Is the site down? It wont seem to load
It is back up again. It seems that we had a hack attack. Sorry.
May I ask what specific type of PVC pipe you're using for this?
This was Schedule 40.
Would any blanket work for this purpose? Like cotton padded ones.
Thick moving blanket, you can also double fold them. They won't sound proof but they'll help a lot with absorption and room reflections
so if two blankets is better... why dont you just produce a blankets with twice the thickness instead?
Good idea! our blankets already twice as thick as a moving blanket, so even if we were to make a double layered blankets ( which we do for Doors and Windows) double of that would still be better!
:)

Hi! Quick question! What type on mic stand would you recommend for a booth of this size? I’m having a hard time finding one that fits in this 3x3 space

Here is the direct link: www.vocalboothtogo.com/product/diy-pvc-vocal-booth-frame-kit-complete-set-just-add-glue/
so in total how many blankets?
It depends on the size of the booth you want to build. On our website www.vocalboothtogo.com we have a calculator, that will show you number and the size of all parts as well as number of blankets you will need.
on double layer, sound is so absorbed by the sheets the booth started to move.
Yes. It's alive!
how do you handle suffocation .../ ventilation ?
You hope for the best
Very funny! :) there is no risk of suffocation there because the blankets are not air tight
For acoustic blankets to absorb sound they have to allow the sound to get in. You can actually breath right through the blanket. It does het warm in there though. So we offer a quiet ventilation fan on our site: www.vocalboothtogo.com/product/quiet-ventilation-fan-muffler/
We also have the speed controller. If you reduce the speed the fan becomes practically inaudible.
What is the footprint of the finished product?
Hello Cyndy :
We intentionally did not provide any specific dimensions in this video, because you can create any size frame that you want.
After this video though , people started asking us to cut frames for them.
Please see this link for some frame sizes:
PVC frame: www.vocalboothtogo.com/product/pvc-vocal-booth-kit-complete-set/
We also have a PVC frame calculator in case you want a different frame size.
What is the name of the tool on 4:24?
it is called "grommet press" or Grommet machine"
is this okay if my enviroment is noisy outside?
my room picks up vehicle sounds
This will not help much at all with that. The blankets provide sound absorbtion, not sound proofing. This will only help elimante echo inside the room but won't help sound from getting out or in. I hope that helps.
I'm a little confused about blankets. You show installation of 3 (80"x80") blankets, but list 5 in the materials list? I have assembled the same design, but using 33" square pieces, rather than 27". My math still says two around the body and one on the roof should suffice, with overlap. Am I missing a step or something important?
We show we are using 2 blankets for the walls and 1 for the roof. Where do you see 5 blankets listed?
@@Vocalboothtogo At 5:30 Immediately after the 5:23 'Materials Used" PVC list slide. It then shows the Producers Choice Blankets at qty. @@paullawson9902 Yeah, i think we had 5 blankets on hand, we ended up using 3 in this video to start, but we added 2 more blankets on the inside for the double walled test. But you can just use 3 blankets for a single wall booth.

Will this work for recording rap music?
Where can I purchase the no noise led strip light (LED-SL)
Ebay?
Wow, can you do it like this but the sound is out !! Because I SING and I do not like anyone to hear me at home or the neighbors !! Please, please, please answer me
Unfortunately you won’t be able to get a pvc soundproof setup. This is more for stopping reflections and making sure your acoustics are good.
What dimensions of this booth?
I think this was 36 x 36 inches. We have different options of precut frames and also a calculator to help you figure out custom frame sizes:

Would liked to have seen a TEST of what noise REDUCTION from OUTSIDE the booth sounded like INSIDE. BTW = Great idea :) Thanks
Exactly.
cool
is there anyway you can make these more soundproof, for an apartment studio, so you don't
have your neighbors complaining about your shit singing to the apt. managers..
"these" like the PVC frame with blankets? only if you add more blankets and only to a certain point.
if your neighbors do not appreciate your singing, then you might want get the the soundproofer version ( SPB series: vocalboothtogo.com/product-category/mobile-recording-booths/mobile-sound-booth-soundproof/ ) or you can aske your neighbors to move.
@@Vocalboothtogo LOL...I appreciate the reply...Thank You...going to look into your products...peace...
I thought you were Walter White in the thumbnail
What was the cost? I want to do this!
PVC frame build cost me about $60 bucks. Totally worth it. The blankets are around $40-50 a pop.
I spent $75 total, the biggest cost being the PVC cutter.
