Iran wouldn't have retaliate, if American officials condemned Israel's attack on the Iranian consulate.
Israel should not have attacked Iranian consulate. Instead, it should have taken Iran seriously when Iran, for years, keeps saying that it wants to wipe Israel from the face of the earth, and deliver to Iran such message that Iran would have nothing to attack Israel with. Just make sure the message is loud and clear. They will get it, I am sure!

Let them know what your cababilities are - which they already know - and keep them quessing about what you will do next other than that you will give full support to your ally.
