Interestingly, on June 8, 1892, Edward O'Kelley also said, "Hello, Bob." just prior to firing both barrels of a shotgun into Robert Ford, killing him instantly, and becoming "the man who killed the man who killed Jesse James".
I was just going to mention this. O'Kelley's killing of Bob Ford was in my opinion far colder than Billy the Kid's killing of Bob Olinger. Not only was Bob Ford's killing premeditated, but he basically had his entire face blown off from just a couple feet away.
I visited Lincoln and Fort Sumner from the UK during July 2023, just be aware if you are planning a visit, they only open the Historical sites like the Old Courthouse on a Thursday, still not appear to have yet fully returned to normal after Covid. Definately worth visiting inside the old Courthouse to stand at the window where Billy stood.
I like the idea of “Hello Bob” being woven into the story. Perhaps it is one part Hollywood and another part observation from those at the time or historians, but for myself what makes Billy the Kid so legendary is the sense you get about his wit, humor and cunning. The statement fits his character well and enhances that feeling.
I was going to add the escape of John Dillinger while in jail at Crown Point, Illinois...Jan. 1934...using a bar of soap carved out like a pistol and darkened with black shoe polish. Really enjoy your storytelling, Bob...by this channel. Keep up the GREAT work, Sir!
I can never decide whether I like the simple "Hello Bob" or another version, "Look up old boy and see what you get." Likely neither was spoken by the Kid, but one kind of wishes he did say something of the kind. The poetry of the moment wants it so!
I had a brother-in-law who was named Bob and I always greeted him by repeating Billys words "Hello Bob...". I used the same tone of voice but he never knew why I said it that way. I had told my former husband the Billy the Kid escape story, prior to my saying this. Every time I would say it, my husband and I would break out in hilarious laughter.
Bob, I enjoyed the story and always look forward to your next. That said, why are they so hard to come by, please make videos more often ive seen all the old ones several times. Your fan.
Enjoyable analogy of history & cooking. Truth, like telling young bride her dinner is outstanding when it could be improved, all in what you want the outcome to be
I would like to know your opinion about, if The Kid was really killed by Pat Garrett. I’ve read quite a bit about it, and I’m not sure one way or the other. Thank you
Great story and who knows but seems pretty risky to give Olinger even a second to try and move away. It was literally a matter of life and death to make sure Bob was eliminated
Whether it actually happened or not we’ll never know but it played out great in Young Guns II. Those 2 films seemed to grab as much of the Billy The Kid folklore as possible whether true or not. Fun and historical.
I have read that Bob wasn't very nice to the kid. I could see a young cocky man getting the jump on someone that had treated him badly. Getting the last word in. Hence Hello Bob.
Consider a known outlaw shot both lawmen dead and no one wanted to be the next dead hero is easy to understand. Few people had guns and fewer would think this was a smart idea. Billy the Kid had nothing to lose except a hanging. The politics of the story meant some of the town’s people were not unhappy the Kid was leaving town.🤔
I agree with you. But Hello Bob, probably came around and has stood the test of time, due to it is some cold blooded stuff to say to someone right before you bust a cap in that ass.
I had a nightmare of a shadow figure with a shotgun at my door.He stated "I ain't here for Bob"so I knew it was me he was looking for ! Then I woke up.True story...
Where did the myth of the 18 dimes in the shotgun originate? I recall "MythBusters" tried to recreate that and the dimes did not hold a close pattern but rather went all over the place thus rendering them useless unless at very close range.
Knowing Billy's sense of humor, and his hatred of Olinger I'm pretty sure that Billy would want Olinger to see him with the shotgun. And to get his attention to look up Hello Bob is a lot more quirky than just Hey Bob. So i believe it.
I love your videos, especially on Billy, but i wish you hadnt said "he would meet his demise if you believe the story". That sentence sounds like you're giving credence to the claims BTK wasnt killed by Garrett.
Serious students of history know that the biggest mistake is to romanticize it. Objectivity goes away and the "facts" become blurry. I like your approach Bob.
Bob states here that he wonders why no one in town challanged the Kid??? Well even in shackles the Kid just killed two men so everyone wised up and let him be would be my guess.
Charlie Jones, a friend in Carlsbad, NM, told me Olinger shot his Uncle John in the back, at a cabin by Malaga, NM. The Jones Family wanted revenge for John’s murder. Billy the Kid was a friend of theirs, and told them : he would take care of Olinger & they shouldn’t get in trouble with the law. Billy kept his promise !!! I also met a older woman in Walgreens who claimed to be a relative of Billy, and he relocated to West Texas and raised a family !!
Thanks Bob, I love listening to your historical tales! 🤠
I love when Bob tells a story
So cool that you can stand right in the window and look down at the plaque right where Ollinger fell. Lincoln is just like stepping back in time...

@@DK-gy7llSo that DEFINITELY left a mark.

👍 Love listening to these stories
I appreciate your final quote about what constitutes History.

Another fascinating historical story. Thank you!
Enjoyable analogy of history & cooking. Truth, like telling young bride her dinner is outstanding when it could be improved, all in what you want the outcome to be
“Best $1.80 I ever spent” might be my favorite line from Young Guns II. I like the “Hello Bob, keep the change” is a great one too!
I would like to know your opinion about, if The Kid was really killed by Pat Garrett. I’ve read quite a bit about it, and I’m not sure one way or the other. Thank you
I agree with you, I doubt Billy would have said a word and he would have just pull the triggers.
Great story and who knows but seems pretty risky to give Olinger even a second to try and move away. It was literally a matter of life and death to make sure Bob was eliminated

I have read that Bob wasn't very nice to the kid. I could see a young cocky man getting the jump on someone that had treated him badly. Getting the last word in. Hence Hello Bob.

What did the other prisoners do?
I said the same thing in the comments and seen you thought the same thing .I've always wondered too. I guess they were free to go..lol
Hello bob, I was wondering what your thoughts on brushy bill Robert’s being billy the kid. I’ve been to the museum in hico and I’ve bought the book.
I agree with you. But Hello Bob, probably came around and has stood the test of time, due to it is some cold blooded stuff to say to someone right before you bust a cap in that ass.
Hello Bob, I enjoy listening to you so much. Long life my friend.
Hey i really appreciate your Kid content
Fascinating story
Hello Bob!! Bang! Good one sir.
Cool man cool!
another great account!
When it comes to true story's and movies, if the sky is blue then they got something right.
he has lived two months normal
How about some backstory on U.S.Marshal "Pecos Bob" Olinger. Do you think the shotgun on display in Lincoln is the one used?
I had a nightmare of a shadow figure with a shotgun at my door.He stated "I ain't here for Bob"so I knew it was me he was looking for ! Then I woke up.True story...

"Hello Bob"!
"Hello Bob..." - Satan waiting at the door of hell.
A time machine. That's the only answer.
A great yarn, told by a master.
Hello Bob
He was quirky at the least. A big ass street howitzer, l think it makes sense he said it.
The Kid sad, "Hello Bob" after, not before, after he killed him.
Hello Bob!
It's interesting how historians go to the ends of the earth to find out the truth and facts of a story!
What happened to the prisoners eating at the hotel across the street after the only laws in town were killed I always wondered
To much history has passed and it becomes lost to whats real and whats not
Hi from the UK lets hear about "Tea Cup Sallie" please, thanks
I love your videos, especially on Billy, but i wish you hadnt said "he would meet his demise if you believe the story". That sentence sounds like you're giving credence to the claims BTK wasnt killed by Garrett.
Yes, its right up there with HERRRE'S JOHNNY!
Serious students of history know that the biggest mistake is to romanticize it. Objectivity goes away and the "facts" become blurry. I like your approach Bob.
"when the legend becomes fact print the legend"
one account had him in the street using a file
deputy Bell died at the top of the stairs
I bought property in lincoln in 1998 and i love
Bob states here that he wonders why no one in town challanged the Kid??? Well even in shackles the Kid just killed two men so everyone wised up and let him be would be my guess.
I thought Billy the kid didn't drink
Or smoke according to George Coe.
Is there any truth to the part of the story that he had loaded the shotgun up with dimes?
olinger took other prisoners to dinner, always wondered what they saw and cid
I choose to believe he said it.
🎠Ride 4 D Rubber Band, Pinocchio Posse Pattea Party. Go see 'em at Big Bend's.🎠
(Have a good un, Mr. Bob)
You look like billy the kid but old version
Governor was corrupt. Shown by his own trail he left .
I wish… I wish… I wish you hadn’t stolen that from another documentary. Hack.
It's said Bob abused him . I'm lead to believe true
