Hey Matt hope all is well. My wife actually took it upon herself and bought me this kit. I had pieced together a kit from thrift stores and hand me down tools from friends who tie but when I got this kit it was mine and there is something to be said about being the first to ever tie a fly with a set of tools as a beginner tier. I did however not have a hair stacker and like you said the one in the kit is light so I stacked a few heavy washers together and glued them to the bottom along with a cork disk and it gave it suitable wait. Anyway enough rambling. As always thanks for you channel content you have been my go to video library for tying.
Appreciate the kind words Cephas, and that is a pretty good idea to put a couple washers on the bottom of the stacker. I'm sure that makes it a lot easier to use. :-)

Glad I came back to watch this review. I'm planning on buying this kit for some backup tools, and my older son (25yo) is showing interest in fly tying. I'd like to give him my original beginners vise, and a set of tools to get him started. My 11yo already has some nicer stuff than me (Such as a Dyna King Trekker vise, other assorted tools, a bunch of Danville's thread, hackles, and fur patches) courtesy of a gift from a fly tyer I started chatting with on FB.
Looks like a good kit. You can never have enough bobbins ,I know I could use more. I agree with you over the hackle pliers, they can be a booger to use sometimes. The Whip Finisher looks to be difficult to use. I have the other brand and love it. I guess it all comes down to what works for each individual . Thank you for the video and review.

Good kit for a beginner.Don’t inder estimate the hair stacker,I’ve used so many differt brands.In the lod days we used two different guage shotgun shells and made our own.My biggest problem is I’m a vise and tool junkie,use a rolltop desk for tieing and the main drawer is loaded with tools,all shapes and sizes.

Good day Matt. Like that you cover the fly tying world with both quality and not such quality tools. What would you recommend for kids? Age 5 to 10. My gràndsons hands are a little to small for most of my tools and he just wants to ty.
Appreciate the kind words! Well, since they don't make small tools just for kids, I think your best option would be just to buy the smallest you can find. Some of the scissors used for cross-stitching might be a little smaller. And maybe a smaller bobbin holder, like the one Rite calls their "midge" size. But I would probably just have him start with regular tools and have him grow into them. Good luck!
I agree Ed! Now they're no Dr. Slick scissors, or the quality of a Rite bobbin (one of my favorites), but they're really pretty impressive for the price. :-)
This #kit wouldn't hurt, I'm just back in to tying after taking a 13 year break. I have 1 metal bobbin, no hair stacker, old scissors, and my bodkin broke the other day and is not held together with head cement.
A nice polished ceramic is actually harder than metals (not stronger, just harder). And believe it or not, you can wear a groove in metal tubes. When that happens and your metal tip bobbin gets a nick or rough spot, it'll start chewing up your thread. And you'll wonder why you're snapping your thread on about every fly. Even after a couple decades tying with it, that won't happen with a ceramic bobbin.

I wonder if the eye on the bodkin would work as a hair packer? Looks like a great kit for the money though! And the light hair stacker may impress you, my best hair stacker is a hook n hackle aluminum one. #Kit
You're probably right Chris- I think the stacker will work fine. But the eye on the bodkin wasn't big enough for packing hair. I don't think anyway. But now that I consider it, maybe it would. Hmmm... I'll have to try that. :-)
@@SavageFlies would be a great little idea to have a hair packer on the back of a bodkin imo. Usually if you're spinning hair, you're reaching for your bodkin to pull out some hair that gets trapped, or atleast I am. So having the packer on the same tool, would be neat.
Be nice to win this #KIT my 2 bobbins are held together with glue and are about 25 years old and I lost my hackle pliers the other day so I've been using a chip bag clip to wrap my hackles.

Don't have a dubbing spinner, curved scissors nor a hair stacker, I have that same type of whip finisher. I think I need to invest a bit on #kit when I get the chance.

Thanks! It is a pretty solid kit. A lot of these tools I keep in my travel kit and they certainly do the trick.
One tool I use instead of a bodkin on many occasions is a micro crochet hook, sizes 11-14 have great uses.
Great idea! I have one sort of like a crochet hook I use to tie knots in pheasant tail fibers for hopper legs.
