  • @anupams2945
    @anupams2945 4 роки тому +4

    Great video covering all aspects of the plant :). And really awesome blooming.
    Where did you get such a small cute pot for seeding? :D.
    One question.. you transplanted such a small seedling in a big size 6 inches pot. It's said that you should gradually transplant and repot a plant from small size pot to bigger pots as it grows, so that the roots grow properly, and also, when you pot a small plant in a much bigger pot, it has chances of rotting because of more water being held in bigger pot. So, planting such a small seedling in a big pot doesn't pose risk?

    • @GardeningUpbeat
      @GardeningUpbeat  4 роки тому +2

      @Anupam S, thank you very much for the feedback, appreciate it :-)
      The pot came with the seedlings itself :-) It's cute though..
      Whatever you are saying is correct but it also depends on how you are going to take care of them. Definitely bigger pot would hold the water for longer period of time and it's kinda bit risky only if you don't know when to water. That's why I don't water them until and unless top soil is not dry (it's a good practice anyway). Just need to be bit careful and we can grow them easily :-)
      After all, growing such tiny seedlings is always a risk but what to do..nursery people sale the seedlings at this stage. So, I need to grab them as quickly as I can otherwise small nurseries buy them. The nursery from where I usually buy is the bigger one - kind of whole seller. But whenever I grow something from seeds myself, I always let them grow a bit more (to reduce the transplanting risk).

    • @anupams2945
      @anupams2945 4 роки тому +1

      @@GardeningUpbeat Thank you for explanation. As I guessed, requires experience to plant such small seedling in a big pot.. have to be careful.
      And yes, it's definitely good to buy a seedling because it comes quite cheap compared to a grown plant.
      I have been trying to get clay pots of less than 6 inches, for seedling or cuttings, or for seedling transplantation, but they aren't available. Clay pots generally start from 6 inches. They are available in plastic, but I don't like to use plastic. I have planted a few plants in plastic pots and my experience hasn't been that good. I think I am not able to understand watering in them perhaps. I find clay pots the best.

    • @GardeningUpbeat
      @GardeningUpbeat  4 роки тому +1

      @Anupam S, Most welcome :-) Actually, it's more satisfying when we can grow directly from seeds. I mean, looking at the stages from seeds germination to a full matured plant, is completely a different feeling. But problem is, hard to get quality seeds all the time. So, I buy the seedlings because I know they are going to be good quality. Plus, like you said, very cheap too :-) Max Rs 6 for most. But Gerbera is quite costly - Rs 45 for one seedling..LOL. Gerenium is also bit costly - Rs 20 for one seedling. But still, cheaper than buying a matured plant :-)
      When we use plastic pot, we would need to water less as water is not going to evaporate through the side wall. Clay pot dry out much faster and honestly saying, plants also clay pot more. Problem is cleaning :-( As they get dirty very soon and then Slugs and Snails start to appear. That's why, now a days I almost don't use clay pot. The pots which I use, have lots of drainage wholes as you have seen and they work almost same way like clay pot. Because of having too many wholes, they dry out faster. Anyway, whenever I use other plastic pot (with less drainage wholes), I make around 4-6 drainage wholes :-) I do it always and I believe you can also do the same if you are getting problem while watering :-)

    • @anupams2945
      @anupams2945 4 роки тому +1

      @@GardeningUpbeat Yes, that's true.. it does feel good when you grow a plant from seed.. really feels satisfying. I haven't had that opportunity yet though. I tried to grow Tulsi once but the potting mix wasn't good and also the pot was plastic.. so the seeds germinated but died soon after. I will try again soon.
      Wow.. 45 and 20 for one seedling is really too much. It's better to buy a mature plant then of these... because they will have more chance of survival.
      I have personally found clay pots to be the best for me. I don't face the problem of them getting dirty too much. They did get dirty during the rains, but that's okay.
      Some plastic pots have really too much drainage holes.. LOL. But, as you say, I think that's necessary. I liked your idea of putting individual pot pieces on each hole. But for that the pot base needs to be flat as your pots. I bought a few pots and the base isn't flat and that poses quite a bit of problem.
      In one video I saw pieces of thermocol being put on those holes. I tried that but the potting mix still comes out of the holes. I have used small plastic pots for cuttings and small plants successfully, but haven't had good experience with the bigger plants. I have quite a few plastic pots but haven't got around to using them for this reason. Let's see.
      What's your opinion about cement pots? Better than plastic or same? I think both have same problem of air and water not being able to pass through both, and also cement pots are heavy too. I might try 1-2 cement pots to see how it goes.

    • @GardeningUpbeat
      @GardeningUpbeat  4 роки тому +1

      @Anupam S, Gerbera and Geraniums seedlings are bit costly as they are bit tricky to grow from seeds. Costly even for matured plants (in my place). Gerbera starts as Rs 180 - 240 (of course I am talking about the hybrid verity, not local one). But agree with you...it's better to spend Rs 180 for a healthy plant rather than Rs 45 for a seedling :-)
      Yah, even nursery people use thermocol for drainage whole. But, I just prefer to use broken pieces of clay pot. I have lots of pot and sometimes few pots get broken by accidentally. So, I never go out of stock..LOL..
      Haven't use cement pot yet...But I think in summer, plants would get bit difficult as cement pot would hold the heat for longer period of time. But still, should not make a big difference as I have seen many people using it.
      Hope your plants are rocking :-) See u soon, TC :-)

      @ramya jegannathan,, glad to know your Gladiolus burbs sprouted..Liliums take bit more time comparing to Gladiolus but shouldn't take more than 2 weeks (in most cases). Liliums are hardy but still, it would be better to protect them from the rains. Before sprouting, if they get too much water, they might rot. Also, I hope the bulbs were bit sprouted one and you haven't planted them too deep.

    • @TMBgarden
      @TMBgarden 2 роки тому +1

      They have a best germination rate in late winter early spring. I direct sow my seeds no deeper than 1cm in my garden soil (a mix of heavy clay with vegetable compost) and after the rain they came out. I try 3 varieties on this method. The blue pansy and the blue feline hybrid pansy came out gorgeous and self seed here and there, but the yellow feline hybrid pansy never came out. I sow the seeds in 2018 and nowdays I still have the blue ones that self seed every winter/spring. My zone is 9b and I have no irritation so, the ones that germinated in summer struggle and die if I don't keep watering with a water can. They come back every year but they are not invasive, since my soil is heavy clay. In pots they germinate as well, but the yellow ones from nursery dye after summer. So for me, the blues ones are completely reliable.

    • @vina23
      @vina23 2 роки тому

      i think they need darkness to germinate, so make sure they’re covered by soil but not too deep (like a quarter inch ?) or a lot of people cover it with a black plastic bag for a week
