Directed by Jonathan Demme, who also did Silence of the Lambs, which features music by J.S. Bach, who is immensely influential on western music and thereby hiphop, funk, etc.
I always thought Tina Weymouth was an overlooked genius. She and Chris are into creating the music while also being young parents living out of the spotlight. I admire them so much.
The first two albums of Tom Tom Club are pretty good, a really interesting mix of funk, new wave and early hip hop. The album David Byrne made with Brian Eno was a great album too, really experimental. But the ones that I think are essential in music history are Remain in Light and Stop Making Sense. Just two of the better albums (one a studio album, the other a live album) of the 20th century in any genre. Keep in mind that Talking Heads were one of the main bands of late 70s/early 80s New York rock scene, in which punk and new wave were born, and a lot of this bands were in good terms with Hip Hop artists from that time. This guys were very open minded and their music reflexed that.
You are cementing yourself as one of the greatest musical historians on the internet - I love the stories you choose to tell and the succinct and fulfilling manner in whixh you manage to tell them 🙌
If you had mentioned Adrian Belew's involvement with both Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club, you could have put in links to even more artists. * Because Belew played guitar for Frank Zappa and toured with him before he was recruited by... * David Bowie, who needed a guitarist for the "Heroes" tour when it came out that... * Robert Fripp who played on the album couldn't be booked to do the tour. So having seen Belew do his thing on the Bowie tour, he was approached by... * David Byrne, who wanted a fresh set of ears and eyes on the "Remain in light" sessions. Belew's crazy stunt guitar can be heard most clearly in "I zimbra" and "the great curve" where he also shares lead vocals with Byrne. Which led to Belew touring with the Talking Heads and getting the call from * Tina Wymouth and Chris Frantz, to play on the Tom Tom Club's album. And to ask him to replace... David Byrne in Talking heads, since everybody was getting fed up with him. Belew declined because he was already asked by ... * Robert Fripp, to start a new band called Discipline, which later changed their name to Fripp's earlier band... * King Crimson So, yeah, shame you didn't mention Adrian Belew's involvement here.
For that matter mention keyboard genius Bernie Worrell who played electric piano on "Genius of Love" and toured with TH. And of course was a founding member of the incredible *Parliament-Funkadelic* bands.
David’s “solo project” was the collaboration with Brian Eno ‘My Life in the Bush of Ghosts’, an album that’s as worthy of a deep dive. ‘Remain in Light’ is Talking Head’s best album. Still sounds fresh today.
Tom Tom Club didn't get the recognition they deserved. If you see the name Adrian Belew, stop what you're doing and listen. King Crimson, Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Laurie Anderson, NIN, Paul Simon, Brian Eno, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Jean Michel Jarre, Cyndi Lauper and Mike Oldfield - in the studio or live - the man is a genius.
I don't know which is best... when you break down music I've heard before, or when you introduce me to music I never knew. Either way, amazing channel!
One of the first tapes I ever had as a kid was Tom Tom Club, Close To the Bone. I played the heck outta that. Still love it. And thanks for these videos my dude!
Let’s not forget Ice Cube used some of the lyrics in Bop Gun as well. “So what you gonna do when you get out of jail? I’m going to have some fun with the Bop Gun”
Thank you for all that great information and showing up these connections between all those different songs, artists and genres. That is very interesting.
Another great video. Ironically my 8 year old daughter’s favorite current song is “Genius of Love”-I havent gotten into samples yet with her, we’ve just been discovering covers. And another irony is that I have been blasting “Like Water for Chocolate” and before that “Fantastic Vol II” which you also made a vid about recently for about the past 2 month-both 2 of my all time fav albums. You are waking music encyclopedia-another great vid
'Remain in Light' is still one of the best albums I've heard in my life. When I finally saw 'Stop Making Sense' and found out the Tom Tom Club came from them, I screamed out loud. Only now to find out the album's backstory was almost the same as Creedence Clearwater Revival...but better.
Let's not forget about the Legend Andre Stax, we can't leave Big Boi out! Let's dive into their journeys their creations, their joint creations and solo creations! Looking into vibrate by Andre would be phenomenal it sounds insane, I can't even comprehend how they achieved some of that production on my own.
Note: Zapp's "More Bounce" was originally written entirely by *Bootsy Collins* . Roger Troutman of Zapp added his vocals and guitar later then wrote the credit as written entirely Troutman with simply 'bass by Bootsy Collins'. Similar to how the credits on "Genius of Love" had David Byrne, Brian Eno and Talking Heads as opposed to Tina Weymouth & Chris Franz recieving proper individual credit. Tricky biz this music industry.
The very first song that sampled this was the song “Genius Rap” by Dr Jeckyll and Mr Hyde After this song blew up, Sylvia Robinson (owner of Sugar Hill Records) wanted to capitalize off of the fame surrounding Dr Jeckyll and Mr Hyde’s version so she had Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five made their version “It’s Nasty”. The album “The Message” was mostly an effort by Sylvia Robinson to capitalize off what was trending during the time
Another great video. Thanks so much for sharing these with us. Also, a question: have you thought of doing a video where you break down the books behind you? I know you've referenced the Dilla one a few times, which lead me to read it (it is a great as you said). And, I recognize the Questlove ones, and Check the Technique, I think. But I can't make out all of them. If they've earned a place on your shelf, it would be cool to have you promo them a bit so we can dive into them as well.
You know who else was in Stop Making Sense and influenced their sound on Remain In Light? BERNIE WORRELL!!! Is it time to delve into the influence Bernie, Bootsy and Parliament Funkadelic had on hip hop?? 🤩
Had absolutely NO IDEA that "Once in a Lifetime" was the Tomtom Club's imitation of Fela Kuti!!! I don't think he pulled it off, but I still like the song.
Bro your videos are so, so good. Absolutely inspirational for my channel! Would love to know how you deal with copyright on music but am sure this isn’t the right forum for it! 😂 All the best my friend
You missed the fact that Angelique Kidjo covered the entire Remain in Light album, making it an African cover of an American album based on African music.
Love your research, presentation and respect!!! I wish you would play MORE of the music to make your points, but I understand why you can't. But yours IS a Classic example of Fair Use. I believe you can easily pass the 4 factors used to determine such (Courts balance these 4 factors to determine Fair Use). BUT of course, UA-cam usually doesn't allow you to or it becomes so expensive and time consuming that it's not worth it. It's a shame, because despite you monetizing your channel, I don't think the copyright holder could overcome 4 part test. But the threat of lawsuit or UA-cam demonetizing or banning a video is real. So here we are: Someone who loves the music, uses it for educational purposes, is exposing it to a new audience and in no way harming "the copyright holder's ability to profit from their original work" who can't really play the music for fear of being banned. Oh well. Much respect to you!!!!
Man, I could talk for hours about this. It's a constant battle - Fall of last year it came to a head with a bunch of demonetized videos, label battle, copyright strike, video removal etc. The good news in all of this is the DTG Patreon is thriving! Such a great group of people all together enjoying music - and the Patreon "Extended Edit" of THIS video - it's at least 5 mins longer 🔥 I don't want to annoy people by constantly plugging Patreon, but the videos over there are genuinely so much better because I don't have the bogus platform restraints
Thanks, i ❤ these. Another v.tenuous link.... both TH and Blondie played at CBGBs in NY during the same nights. Blondie then rapped about 'Flash' on 'Rapture' and Flash mixed it within his 'Adventures of'. Debbie Harry also has a cameo in Wildstyle. NY Punk and hip-hop have a strange but strong connection. Just ask the Beastie Boys.
Where was Debbie Harry in WILDSTYLE? I believe you meant *Patti Astor* who co-starred in the film as the blonde hipster white chick caught up hanging with Fab 5 Freddie and Lee Quiones in the Bronx' developing Hip Hop scene. Her style is very similar to Debbie Harry's, platinum blonde and all.
I feel that X-Clan's 'In The Ways Of The Scales' deserves a mention. For me the main Golden Era use of Genius Of Love. Mariah Carey was just leeching off of hip-hop by then, same as with J-Lo using that Beatnuts sample a few years later.
Woah! Paul Simon gets a [bling], but Peter Gabriel doesn't! What gives?! You don't need to give a [bling] to Phil Collins though. You made the right call there.

Stop Making Sense is one of the best concert documentaries I’ve ever seen.
I was going to say the same thing. Even if you're a die-hard B-boy, go track it down. It even starts with a tapedeck playing an 808 loop.
Best live album ever
Best ever, full of freatest songs!
Directed by Jonathan Demme, who also did Silence of the Lambs, which features music by J.S. Bach, who is immensely influential on western music and thereby hiphop, funk, etc.
The best anyone has ever seen :P
De La and Redman had two of the best "Genius" flips I've ever heard.
Don't apologize for constantly mentioning Dilla, ever!!!!
He makes NO apologies for that!
Never ever ever!!!!!!

The first samples I remember are “It’s Nasty” by Grandmaster Flash & the furious 5 & “Genius Rap” by Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.
“Genius Rap” motivated Sylvia Robinson to have Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five make “It’s Nasty”
Ase' that!

How do you do a deep dive on a single album?
Fela's my fav artist all time, it's beautiful to see him continue to get the recognition of his genious creativity 50 years later 🙌
In 1990, X-Clan had the best version of the sample for In The Ways of the Scale.
This man continues to absolutely cook and I'm loving every minute of it
My favorite song sampling Genius of Love is Redman's Brick City Mashin'! Eric Sermon did his thang🔥🔥🔥🔥 Btw, keep up the good work.💪🏾
