KEY PROVIDED BY THE DEVELOPER
I don't even bother reading reviews any more, for the past decade or so. In today's age of digital media, I can see and learn more about a game just by watching a gameplay video. I can usually make a purchasing decision just based on that more so than anything a review tries to sell to me.
Sir, we do. In fact, we deserve a better class of everything -- and that's why we're doing things ourselves now.
I used to be an editor and then senior editor for a well-known news site. Things really shifted around 2016-2017 and the bottom fell out of the ad revenue per-click market. There wasn't enough money to go around anymore, and people had to start writing topics that got the most engagement/clicks vs what was actually considered news. At the same time, sponsors were and still are around, and they are a major source (likely the biggest source) of revenue for most news media companies. And what I can tell you from personal experience is that when an article upsets a sponsor, the sponsor almost always wins.
As for ACG - I like him, but I unsubbed after his Starfield review. I realized he was just evaluating games in a completely different way than I do, so his reviews wouldn't help me decide what games I should play.
No one, but the mentally ill, trust these corpo guys anymore. Whether you like it or not you guys are now the REAL game reviewers 👍
Well they are paid to give a good score, but this is another reason why you can't trust them they are quite literally paid, it's no different from the people who are given a free copy of the game and who are trying to become a reviewer themselves, that's another form of payment, then there's another form of payment we've been hearing about where a studio flies someone over and gives them a vacation basically treats them to a nice steak dinner or something like that on a nice restaurant, and pretty much wine and dine them and then allow them to play the video game, only for them to come back and do their review on it, that is another form of bribery flattery in order to get a good score for a video game.
For myself I can't trust reviewers who take that deal, I can only trust reviewers who do a realistic review and they are known to be skeptics, meaning they actually have a history of being skeptical of game releases they purchase it with their own damn money and they aren't bribed or given the game for free and they reviewed, but this brings up an issue when it comes to launch day, for a little while there it seemed like they had a better deal setup.
Basically the game would release an early access for a week, and the players would play the game and so long as they gave the game back within that week and then did their review, they could keep their money because it was early access so long as they gave back the game and they could do their review however they damn well pleased, but it seems like that early access privilege is going away because these game Dev companies are starting to realize people are reviewing honestly, and they only want the paid reviewers the ones that give them the best score, so I don't trust any of the corporate reviewers, in my opinion nobody should trust them in this day and age, back in the day I trusted them a little bit more because they were more than video game enthusiasts, these days they seem to be more activist than they are video game enthusiasts, so these days you just can't trust the big wigs who review the video game, cuz they'll always give it a good score regardless how bad the game is, and of course they are paid to do it or bribed.
Access journalism is a cancer but it will continue until some great change happens to society as a whole. People make crazy amounts of money and it will not stop. This is not me trying to blackpill, but merely saying you need to get involved in politics if you want change.
Yeah they seem to act like they're CNN, which is also a biased News Network, might as well name it that BNN bias news network.
IGN is the CNN of game news.
IGN still exists? There's a reason I've been looking to YT gamers for game reviews/recommendations.
Same, I ignore them completely, hell I've outright not recommended their channel, whenever UA-cam tries to recommend it to me, I click on the thing that says do not recommend this channel, and it never comes back to my algorithm again, I do not trust them, they are a paid reviewer, it's the same thing with all the others that are paid.
I trust regular gamers who purchase the game with their own damn money to review the game over the people who are paid or given the game for free or are given a free vacation just to play the game, all of those things to me are bribery by the studio and those people you just can't trust just because they were given an inch in which when they make the review they take more than a mile to explain how great the game is with drug-filled eyes.
Oh boy, did Scarlet miss GamerGate? This is what TotalBiscuit was talking about back in the days, and these freak Journos were and still trying to smear his name because he called them out. RIP TB
but wasn't he also defending microtransactions and tried to normalize them as he was also sponsored by companies ? Are you sure if he is resting in peace or wrestling with the Lucifer ?
TB was controlled opposition, like alex jones
That dude needs to come back, I don't know why you put rip did he die? Or was he just annexed from the skeptic gaming review community?
@@5226-p1e he wished cancer upon 2 people, then got it himself.
I don't care about anyones scores, I just want to hear what people like and don't like about a game and I'll decide if I agree and disagree. There's only a few reviewers that I trust to speak truthfully, be proud I count you among them
You sir have earned another sub. I'm also frustrated with the current state of video game "journalism." Integrity is key, and I can't wait to be along for the ride. Suffice it to say I feel the same way that you do about pretty much everything you talked about in this series.
Never take reviews seriously except from dunkey and you, so many people play and forget the main reason of gaming, having fun, these generic new games that want to be everything at ones (both AAA and indie) have a very short exp date, but fun will prevail
Scores introduce a false sense of objectivity. They are only useful shorthand for comparison of an underlying qualitative sentiment.
I will be honest, sometimes i don't kind of agree with some of the things you say about certain games. But i never doubt it is your honest opinion and i can absolutely respect that.
I absolutely Loved a couple of games you reviewed and what not have found them without your review. So keep doing what you are doing and thank you
you and me both know theres one who tells the truth ,a old gamer ,with 30yrs of gaming experience....WORTH A BUY .No paid crap,no script,no pandering ,just honesty
The obsession with the greater good led people to say that Joel was the bad guy in The Last of Us because he didn't allow Ellie to be sacrificed to make what was hoped to be a cure for the infection. When we later learn that the "cure" wouldn't have worked this proved those who held to the view that Joel was wrong were themselves wrong. Even if it could be guaranteed the cure would work I still think Joel would be right to do what he did. If it takes the sacrifice of a child to save the world then thats not a world I would want to live in.
I really enjoy your videos. Eveidence based reviews are very missed. I hope this channel takes off for you. Respect!
I'm just so sick of all the bullshit. I just want to know about the game, a fact sheet or a lab report like you said.
Yes, we need good "video game pundits/journos" that can do the job properly - inform the viewer on what's happening in the gaming industry and whether a game is worth purchasing now or waiting for a big discount.
There are too many people who misinform and out right don't know what they are talking about on youtube. Every day I'm tempted to put more and more people on the "do not recommend channel" list.
Well said I despise mainstream games journalism it has been corrupted for quite awhile now. They play it safe and sell their souls for free stuff and game events. I remember IGN giving alien isolation a 5/10 and called it mediocre. But they gave veilguard a 9/10 this video was refreshing to watch.
Well done 👏
Review metrics have been stale for so long. I was hoping a group like Second Wind would venture out into new territory, but seeing how much they delete/block comments and whine about the industry, they've just become another Kotaku. Shame. They have a couple of good reviewers, but they're impossible to engage with. Thanks to you and other independent creators for all the hard work. The only thing I still watch legacy channels for is 'worst of the year' lists, which are admittedly fun. Agree with ACG, good channel. And I will always love WorthABuy.
First time I heard about Kotaku was like a few months ago. And even then I was surprised that they exists after reading some bullshit from their website. Then I did read the same bullshit on IGN. This is when I stopped looking at any reviews written by westerners and decided that if I want to know something about games I need see people playing them on youtube.
Let's plays and reviews after 100% completion of games is where everything I need is.
I agree with everything you said and hope you're blessed in all you do.
I immediately disregard everything someone has to say about a game when they were invited to a event with the developers of said game and maybe had their flight/hotel/food paid for.
The integrity of the review is now compromised & their words are now just an ad.
And the Kane and Lynch mess basically turned me off to all "pro" game reviewers.
I couldn't agree more. Early review copies are fundamentally corrupt even and the Overton window is now at a place where people don't see it as such. If you review games professionally i.e. get paid for it you should not in my opinion be taking any money from devs or be sucking up to them for early access to their products so you can make more money off of having stuff early on your channel. You shouldn't be taking freebies or going on trips or have a close personal relationship with them. You don't get to take money off of people and say that it's not going to affect you. Human beings are flawed, there is a reason why anti corruption rules exist, because we are all corruptible and all fallible. Imagine if a politician took a tv from a company were they were voting on something that may affect that company. No one would think that's fine. Early access to review copies are worth thousands potentially to youtubers in ad revenue as if they don't get it early and release their review a week after launch it will get alot less views so even the ACG way of doing it is not right in my opinion. I understand people have to make a living but it doesn't make it any less corrupt. Alot of reviewers will be have to make the decision as to whether or not to give it a bad score because they may be blacklisted from the publisher from receiving review copies again. That shouldn't be in your thoughts when reviewing a game. Also I do agree alot of youtubers come across as pretentious, I like skill up but some of his reviews are hard to listen to. Flowery language, transposing all sorts of nonsense onto the most insignificant aspects of the game and criticising things that are irrelevant often too. There needs to be some standards in regards to the technical aspect of a game too. How is stalker 2 getting 9's from some places when it's a broken mess? Maybe they didn't encounter any bugs but it is highly unlikely. I looked at some of the top reviewers for stalker 2 on metacritic, some at least of the 9's and 10's are publications from eastern Europe who seem biased as hell.
Yeah, the Veilguard and Avowed previews has shown that access media is stronger then ever, even for so called independent youtube reviewers. Most of them seem to drool at the opportunity to be part of "the industry" and throw their integrity and objectivity at the wayside to stay in the publishers good graces. Just disgusting.
I wholeheartedly agree that we don't deserve such shitty reviewers. When reviews for DA Veilguard dropped it was an absolute shitshow that proved how fake everything is in the game journalism side of things. Props to you for speaking up and trying to change the state of things.
Veilguard is good and i am 1000% sure you haven't played it, like the VAST majority of people who hate it. You just want it to be rated lower because "pronouns". I don't like pronouns myself, i think they are stupid. Yet, you know what i'm not ? A fcking child. I'm not going to throw away a whole ass videogame just because of a "chose your pronouns" option in character creation. Grow the fck up.
ACG is good but I still prefer Skillup, his level of insight is second to none. The Vanguard prologue was to try and minimise the inevitable drama of posting a review that was contrary to everyone’ else’s. I’ll take it for the one honest review before release.
A big part of the problem is access journalism, once you’re off the big publisher lists you’re kinda fecked. People go to reviews to inform their purchasing decisions, if you don’t get timely reviews out you won’t get the early purchase audience.
Anyway wish you luck.
I love a good scarlet rant.
From this point on, I will only refer to Alannah Pearce as "that white-haired Aussie Sheila." Thank you for that.
The vg review industry is just as disgustingly rotten, incestuous and currupt as pretty much any other that I’ve encountered. Movies, books, even outside of media: equipment, tech, etc. Where the absolute mainstream reviews are a very expensive joke and so many of the individual ones equally laughable but slightly cheaper. It just so happens that its downfall was relatively fast and so well documented. So much the same advice applies from a “consumer” standpoint. Exercise critical thinking (the final decision always lies on your hands). Be skeptical but not cynical. Find a handful of reviewers who have proven themselves to be tried and true. Consistency is indeed the name of the game even if your opinions or preferences don’t align to perfection. It’s about being able to have a thermometer, so to speak. And when you find them, hold them to the high standard they set for themselves by earning your trust. We can argue about differences in approach from a very strict formula and scoring system to a looser more open essay like approach. I think they both have their place and bring different things to the table. What matters most is that the “consumer” is able to take each for what it is and synthesize the relevant information so that it can contribute to properly informing a purchase decision.
Scarlet, you bring a lot of value to the review space. Your integrity and consistency is admirable and although I don’t always align with you I always appreciate your videos. Looking forward to whatever form they next take and hopefully it will work towards moving the needle and breathing some fresh air back into the general review space!
Cheers and sorry for the wall of text.
I like Your take mate!
RIP TotalBiscuit, the gaming world lost one of the best reviewers that had an integrity and publishers feared him.
When you add a number to your review, that is all a lot of people are going to see. If you can make it work, congratulations, you might be be the only one.
When a good amount of outlets band together to try and drag a great game like Black Myth Wukong through the mud, all because of 1 developers tweets, then you know they are writing primarily for their own interests / hurt feelings, and don't actually give a crap about the games they're 'reviewing' or the majority of people that play those games. Most mainstream outlets have become irrelevant (and they know it). There's so many solo content creators that write their own reviews and are laser focused on simply creating a good review, why would anyone even bother with the activists disguised as reviewers who work at most of the mainstream outlets.
TheRadBrad is still the gold standard of game reviewers 😀
I give much more worth in random youtuber's word than IGN and the like. Heck, I don't even listen or watch them anymore for more than reading their comment section for laugh and giggles.
It's good to have a range of reviewers for a range of different generes I watch AJ and Bellular for the weekly game news.
Matty for Bethesda stuff
Civvie 11 and GmanLives for FPS
Avalanche for suvival horror
Charlatan Wonder for indies and his cat lol
Digital Foundry for the specs
You are really wise for your age, sir. Take care
Game reviewing has always been a crooked game but its now at peak corruption, its never been as consistently bad as it is now, gaming for gamers, look at what a dirty word games journalists think gamer is
Attempting to review modern games in dept is like trying to be a cheff critic at a fast food restaurant.
I approve this message for what thats worth. lol
Good review: "Corporate shill!!"
Bad review: "Rage farmer!!"
Which one should it be?
IGN gives this video a 7/10
Oliver Queen: IGN, Polygon etc. you have failed this city!
Mate everything is garbage this generation.
EVERYTHING.
Can't spell ignorant without IGN
I think you're kind of romanticizing game reviews from 20 years ago. People have ALWAYS complained about Gamespot and IGN whenever their favorite game gets trashed by a reviewer.
Video game reviews by nature are not the same context as objective based evidence journalism.
Different people can heavily like and dislike vastly different games. It has ALWAYS been like this, even in the 90s magazine reviews era. I remember all too well.
angry joe show, matty plays are big game reviewers on youtube and not paid shills
I appreciate honest reviews on games, but I don't like the videos made to cash-in on drama. Videos that rant about the industry are part of the problem. It becomes part of the noise and normalizes all the clickbait videos with a big poggers faces in the thumbnail. Don't emulate this. Don't be a part of the culture that games the youtube algorithms for the most watches, likes, and comments. Please don't manipulate people, luring them with cryptic titles or topics designed to emotionally trigger people's curiosity or outrage. I want to hear opinions on games, good and bad, but not all the salty ranting.
Unbelievably lame and gay
Anyone who uses the word "trigger" nowadays is part of the modern audience problem
Please spare us.
@bentinbama1 dude's a dork
@@Cylume. He's making a cogent argument using examples and stating his positions. Nothing in this video is designed to emotionally trigger people or whatever it is you're trying to say. This is some low testosterone dork stuff.
For me, this video has just made me an even bigger fan of Scarlet.
You know I trust people that do the drama more than I trust the people who are paid to review the game, because the people who are doing the drama typically are the most skeptical, they weren't paid by the company to review the product, they use their own damn money and reviewed it with a critical view of their own, I know you like to call that drama but I look at it is critical thinking and critical thought, and yes it can turn into drama if there's something they find that is highly controversial, say d e i is an example that's highly controversial, anything woke controversial.
Bad graphics bad gameplay bad writing bad mechanics are all controversial, but they have to be talked about otherwise you can't trust the reviewer.
This is a very stale take..... yawn
Just scream how every game is "Woke!!" Then sit back and collect your easy money.
That's how UA-cam Game Reviews work now.
